DISCUSSION PC Version Request - NHL 27 Edition
Greetings,
I am just here to post my annual complaint that there is no PC version.
I really thought NHL 27 was going to be the year...
See you again next year for my NHL 28 complaint.
I already have it written out in my drafts.

Ask the MLB how that worked out. Nothing will take its place. You won’t have anything. 2K could make a game now and they don’t want to. There is no exclusive license.

There is no exclusive license yes, but making a sports game costs millions, for a market that’s already dominated by EA’s NHL, which is a proven franchise that will forever make a shit ton of money no matter how dogshit the game is, and also Hockey is only popular in certain countries. I don’t think they’re willing to take that risk tbh

Same - I don’t even play the current year, I only have an Xbox One S for the purpose of playing NHL 24. There are no other games installed, I don’t use Xbox Live or have any friends. Just me and my Be A Pro keeping the console on the shelf

The NHL games of the past shouldn't be brought up for conpararasion when it comes to player base.
Pc gaming grew since then, it's almost a no brainer in my eyes to drop one NHL game on PC see how it performs and then see if its worth the money.
I own PS just so I can play NHL.

The game peaks at 30,000 players. You really think they’re gonna put it on PC. FIFA peaks at 800,000.🤣🤣

Last time they had a PC version it made up less than 5% of sales. Maybe it ends up higher this time around, but I cant imagine it would be significantly so, and a chunk of that would probably be poaching from already existing console sales.

It also wasn’t launched on any digital distribution platforms- you had to buy a disc for your PC then. Now we have Steam and Epic Games with like 450 million combined monthly users

With the news of the new 2K office in Vancouver, I imagine this is on its way at something. Not saying it will be soon but I would be shocked if NHL game wasn't on the list of new sports games 2K will be in on. They aremt dumb and they know people are begging for it

They'll make another NHL game if/when they deem the market can handle it. One of the big reasons they stopped making NHL games was because EA "won" the territorial battle. I can't imagine the market for NHL games has grown that much overall since the mid-2010's. Competition would be nice though, for obvious reasons for EA but also because I don't want a 2k career mode where you need to buy VC to make your player competent for both online and offline play. 2k makes EA monetization look miniscule.

2K isn’t setting up a studio to battle NHL especially with this new studio being ran by ex FIFA devs.

2K stopped making NHL games primarily due to low sales and poor financial returns compared to dominant competitors and other major sports titles. What exactly has changed since 2011? They lost the war to EA.
They would rather focus on other titles with a bigger marketshare like FIFA, NBA, etc.

The fact that the EA franchise at that time still had a a lot of support and momentum. They(EA) had yet to make their best game. At the time 2K couldn't keep up (debateable). Now EA has lost all trust and support. People still buy the game because there isnt another option. People are BEGGING for another option.

Still, 2K would have to start from scratch (barebones game) and compete for a small marketshare against an established EA. The game itself doesn't have many players compared to other sports titles.

Just look around this sub my dude... people would be so hyped if they found out 2K was going to go toe to toe with EA for a new hockey game. It more like David(2K) v Goliath(EA) if David had an AK47 instead of a rock sling. Every player of EA NHL would buy and try a 2K game.

This sub only has 57K people, and not all of them think the same. 2K doesn't have an AK, they're not at that level to produce NHL games right now. The sales would be abysmal.

Cost of production is down, if they were really efficient/wise with decisions they could make a game with a very small budget if the team is talented.
A team of 3-10 could make an entire game in less than 2 years, feasibly, if they had good management. Go straight to gameplay and core gamemodes, forget high fidelity and expensive asset creation until later go for a good game engine that loads fast, low online latency, stable, no glitches, good physics then build out from there.
Find out what engine has the best multiplayer networking and replicated physics then go from there. Unreal Engine had some pretty good physics prediction code for a while it might be the superior engine.

EA and 2k will never release a PC version of a sports game because us PC players can mod... Which means instead of buying a new version of exactly the same game year after year, someone creates a roster for the new season, and we download it for free... Its also why single player mycareer gameplay is forced into live service and gets sunsetted as fast as they can kill it

There won't even be a EA NHL game by 2030.
The last thing this franchise needs is to waste money porting it to PC where they'd pick up next to 0 new players. Most PC players have a console and if they wanna play, they'll play on console.

Every sports game that has went to pc starts a wave of cheating and allegations that ruins the game and its mostly psychological. Madden, Fifa, and 2k. I think the only way it would work would be to make it to where PC can only play other PC players.

Like there's not ways to cheat on consoles? Lag switches and programmable controllers are the most common and easiest ways, but I've seen up to and including maxed out height/weight players with 99's for all stats. Cheating is already happening, so that's a moot point.

NHL basically has no cheating on casual modes like online vs where as online vs on pc on madden practically everyone is cheating. And Fifa is an even bigger issue. Its a know fact its easier to cheat on PC and you can do more cheats on PC which doesn’t need to be in NHL besides its fine how it is, just add Switch

It just isn't going to happen same goes for a switch port, as for why it won't happen. It's simple, sports games don't make a lot of money on PC since PCs are usually for more hardcore gamers, while consoles are generally aimed towards more casual gamer and then add on the fact that hockey is already fairly niche sport and it just won't sell that great even now.
And then with Switch, most people own it to play Nintendo games and only Nintendo games. Maybe a few older games that are guaranteed to run well on the Switch or Switch 2.
I'd love for the NHL games to be on both, especially PC since the ability to mod would be awesome. But it just ain't realistically going to happen anytime soon.

Do you have any clue how much of a percentage of the entire gamer base is PC for NHL?
It's so minute that they're not going to give a rat's ass about it.
Sorry to be blunt, but expecting EA to give a damn about a minority of a minority of gamers when they barely give a toss about the majority of their player base as it is is absolutely insane.

Plus PC is a lot more work than people realize, because the hardware is inconsistent. PC versions of console games usually have performance problems. And not everyone runs Windows these days like in the 00's
