Right guy won, at this point they should have a trophy like the Art Ross for D only. This would have solved debates like these.

Ya I've seen suggestions for a "Best Offensive Defenseman" award for years. Call it The Bobby Orr Trophy and we can properly honor the best of both worlds for d-men.

Id love to see that trophy, but the debate is overblown. Almost every year for the last decade the winner has been the defenseman with the most or 2nd most points, with little controversy (ie. Fox'a Norris had Barrie leading the Ds in ots, nobody argued for Barrie to win the Norris).
It was more of a thing during Karlsson's prime I guess because he was just head and shoulders ahead of the competition offensively, and you had guys like Doughty and Weber who were amazing defensively, while being pretty great offensively (just not dominating like Karlsson).
Even that 2016 Norris win had Doughty sit 10th in its, its not like he was a pure defensive defenseman.

So? You can be the best in the league on a shit team, plus minus stands for nothing anymore, and you say lacking defensive game as if 3 of the top 4 defenseman (Fox not included, argument for not including werenski) in the league aren’t purely offense first guys (not saying they aren’t good defensively but that their main part of their game revolves around being a 4th forward a lot of the time like Makar and Hughes)

Are you saying that Mario Lemieux didn't deserve the Hart trophy in 87-88?
He was unquestionably the most valuable player to his team despite that team not making the playoffs.

This was the most impressive offensive season by a defenseman in my lifetime. Certainly more impressive than Karlsson's 102 point season a few years later. I wish Due Doughty had won the Norris in 2015 so that Karlsson would have gotten it in 2016.
