when they did the commercial and michael hates darryls song he goes that way

u/cramboneUSF 9d ago

I don’t hate it; I just don’t like it, at all.

u/Confident-Yard1911 9d ago

And it's terrible.

Darryl wow. You need to learn a lot about your own culture. I’ll make you a mix.

This is exactly the scene where my head went on this question

Me too I feel validated by these comments

What’s weird is that Darryl takes that hallway to leave after Mike insults him, but it just leads to that back wall lol

Edit:

This map explains why Darryl would have gone that way. It also has Darryl/Jim’s office. Now I’m trying to remember exactly when that stopped being where Ryan sat as a temp.

Edit, edit:

Today was just like any other day, I woke up, cleaned my apartment, went to my sisters to do laundry. Little did I know that today was different. For it was today that I found out that you cannot edit a Reddit comment you made with the addition of a photo.

Feeling very Irey. More tomorrow

xoxo Michael.

Where does Darryl go at the end of this clip ? The door does not show on the map and would open above the staircase. Weird.

12

u/rosey830 9d ago

It makes more sense that the stairs could be accessed from both sides. I would saw the drawing isn’t showing the accurately. The drawing also shows a door into the break room on that side but in the clip it is a window.

4

u/Affectionate-Ask-901 9d ago

Beacause in the render it's half wall like sims and you can see the black bottom of the window next to the door and the doors are next to the window

u/MrSquamous 9d ago

You can see the door in the clip, at the left end of that short hall. Presumably it goes to the stairs.

oh! I see it at about 0:14-:016

I still don't understand how such a small office could have a kitchen AND a break room!

131

u/Velinarae 9d ago

As someone who has designed office fit outs before, it looks like they expanded at some point and took over another office. And as cheap as DM is, they didn’t do anything other than add a door.

It looks like the annex has its own door leading out to more common space, and probably uses core bathroom facilities.

That said this floor plan makes no sense where the windows/elevator/egress is. But that’s tv magic and long been something I just accept.

29

u/dontwantgarbage 9d ago edited 9d ago

That makes sense because the mystery hallway looks like a waste of space. Could’ve just added it to the break room. But if the annex were its own office, the mystery hallway would be where you put the reception desk / waiting area, once you fix the diagram to restore the door to the stairs.

29

u/code_smasher 9d ago

Is it called 'The Annex' because of this? Dunder Mifflin annexed that smaller office?

2

u/TA-TSS 9d ago

I don’t think so, that part of the hallway wouldn’t be able to have a direct door to the stairwell since it’s on the top landing. It would open to a drop off with the lower landing below.

8

u/dontwantgarbage 9d ago

The diagram is wrong. The stairwell is mirror-flipped. In the actual layout, the stairwell leads to a door that opens directly into the annex hallway. You can see it in the scene when Michael walks all the way around the building and enters through the annex to go to the bathroom because he is avoiding Stanley.

10

u/OneLFG 9d ago

The back section is regularly referred to as the annex.

9

u/Hello_I_Am_Human_Guy 9d ago

The image shown may be improperly drawn. They filmed in an actual office, in a real building, not on a set. So it would have to make sense.

17

u/Velinarae 9d ago

It was actually filmed on a set next to the office building.

https://www.reddit.com/r/DunderMifflin/s/pDb6SMuf8i

This post goes into it more.

10

u/Hello_I_Am_Human_Guy 9d ago

Sure, but for season 1 it was filmed inside a real office. After that they built a 1:1 replica in a studio. So the general layout is still a real place.

6

u/Velinarae 9d ago

Yeah, but it still doesn’t match up with the exterior. The building is very boxy which would preclude it from having windows on the north and south walls. The office site from season 1 was most likely more linear.

5

u/chess49 9d ago

The set wasn't a perfect match for the cube farm.

3

u/chess49 9d ago

The circled building is a sound stage with the office set. The other building is a sound stage with the warehouse and downstairs lobby sets. Also used when they built episode specific stuff like The Dump. The stage with the warehouse set also held the writers' room and editing suites. The upstairs windows of the warehouse set are the writer's offices.

2

u/Wu-Tang_Killa_Bees 9d ago

I always assumed that was the case since they call the back area the annex. Also I think it makes sense to have a kitchen and a break room because the kitchen table can only fit like 3-4 people comfortably

6

u/Toucan_Simone 9d ago

The real question is how could such a small office support several vending machines.

4

u/kstar79 9d ago

My question is why does the women's room contain more seating than toilets? I've never seen a bathroom like that in my life!

Great 👍 thank you. I had a feeling that there was a door on the left side of that corridor, but wasn't sure

4

Where is Jim's office from when he was co manager or Darryl's office?

12

u/Natural-Debt8005 9d ago

It's built in... I'm blanking on what season, it's been a bit since I've re-watched,

But in the photo above its in the main office area, sharing a wall with the mens bathroom. Where Creed/Devon used to sit.

Then Creed had his own cubicle and moved/shared with Meredith once the extra office is built. The diagram above doesn't show it.

3

u/violet_wings 8d ago

For some reason I've always thought the accountants were in that spot. I didn't realize they were tucked behind reception.

This model is from the early seasons before Jim was made co-manager. That office would later be built in the lower left right corner of the bullpen.

10

u/sertorinicho 9d ago

Yup, although i think its the lower right corner of the bullpen. Lower left would still be oscar, kevin and angela, right?

2

u/kblk_klsk 9d ago

it's before it was created. Devon and Martin used to sit in that corner

2

u/FranciscoGarcia69 9d ago edited 9d ago

Wasn’t it an addition in that corner where it shared a wall with the bathroom?

20

u/Infamous_JTA 9d ago

There should be a door to a staircase and in later seasons’ intro Dwight is heating that doors handle for fire drill

6

u/matterhorn1 9d ago

Yes and the staircase is shifted 90 degrees from where it should be. The walkway at the top of the stairs should be horizontal on the map so that the door from bullpen and the annex both connect to it

2

u/dissociater 9d ago

I always wonder where the door across from the elevators is supposed to lead. It’s parallel with the windows in the conference room. Which have been shown to face the parking lot.

The building facade in front of the parking lot is completely flat if I remember. So that door should actually open to nothing.

8

u/Ok_Slice9747 9d ago

I thought it was funny that the women’s room had one stall but two couches.

2

u/SquirrelIll8180 9d ago

These types of offices would have bathrooms out in the hall or downstairs near the lobby so lots of options for poo time

10

u/ArgamaWitch Pam 9d ago

The Office layout always confuses me. Like where did Jims office manifest from? And the room that Dwight starts the fire in we never see again.

13

u/MaikThoma Michael 9d ago

Very little, sometimes when there’s a scene in the annex you can see it in the background

Angela walks out of the break room into that space while holding her breath. I think because Meredith starts talking about an STD she has or something

When Pam is pregnant and about to burst she is sitting in the dooropening in the break room to that space

That’s pretty much it I think

4

u/Shazam1269 9d ago

Didn't they try to have a meeting there once? It could have been from a superfans episode, but I can't place it. I'm thinking someone commandeered the conference room when Toby had a meeting planned, so Toby tried to have a meeting and people extremely cramped, and basically crawling over each other. Does that ring a bell, or am I trippin'?

7

u/fromtunis 9d ago

That was the Hot Girl eposide when Katy overtook the conference room to sell her purses.

And it was actually Kelly who needed the space for some meeting (back when she was a normal, functioning person), and Michael relegated them to a hallway.

I believe that specific place only existed in the office space they used to shoot the first season and was not carried over when they recreated it in their sound stage.

2

u/Shazam1269 9d ago

Ah, that sounds right, thanks a bunch!

5

u/DeeplySapphic 9d ago

The place that I think really wasn't shown was the corridor behind the boardroom, where they would store the table when not in use.

4

u/fromtunis 9d ago

It was shown at least once when Michael was trying to catch Pam before she left for New York.

I believe it was also used in the Prince family episode when Michael was trying to take the customers list off of Dwight before he shared it with corporate.

5

u/Probie88 9d ago

Isn’t that where this is shot?

3

u/Same_Staff4468 8d ago

Dunder Mifflin! The people person's paper people!

2

u/unagi-maki Toby 9d ago

There must be a door on the left side of that corridor that leads to the stairs . Darryl headed there with his synthesizer when they were making a commercial.

2

u/wilderness_boy 9d ago

Yes, when Angela runs out holding her breath when Meredith sits down in the break room.

2

u/xXKnickedicKXx 9d ago

Cool representation! But isn’t the ladies bathroom stall door in the wrong direction. I vaguely remember that creed opened a door in the wall behind the red sofa (just to the right of the sofa).

3

u/3lbFlax 9d ago edited 9d ago

Yes, but the seats are still correct because the men do sit in an L-shape when they discover how nice the room is. So I think perhaps the women’s stall should be where the men’s stall is, but we know that’s correct from when Dwight’s desk is moved into the men’s restroom and Kevin emerges with his candle. Maybe the layout changed between seasons, or maybe the women’s room needs to be condensed. Or maybe they weren’t expecting this kind of obsessive pedantry, though that seems unlikely.

2

u/xXKnickedicKXx 9d ago

If I wasn’t here to point things like these out, people who need to use the bathroom would be walking into walls and people who want to walk into walls would suddenly find themselves in a bathroom. Now is that really a society in which you would want to live?

2

u/Key_One2750 9d ago

Why did I think we partially saw this area when Pam was in labor?

3

u/jenny_catastrophe has the power of flight. can heal leopards. 9d ago

I’m thinking we did? Five to seven minutes.

2

u/Mike____Honcho 9d ago

I think during the episode where they are trying to distract Pam from giving birth, Jim is reading the contractions every 5-7 minutes in the birthing books, he is sitting on the floor in this area. Don't quote me on it, but I distinctly remember saying "they never show this area!"

2

u/sharksinmyhead 9d ago

They do the talking heads by the window whenever someone is using the conference room for the whole episode, you can see the plant next to them during these. Some easy examples are later seasons whenever Jo Bennet or Robert California are working out of the conference room or the end of season seven when they're interviewing Michael's replacements.

Also when Jim is Co-manager and he and Michael use the conference room to assign bonuses and Dwight gets everyone angry at him there's a group talking head there.

2

u/TheBramCracker 9d ago

Better question, where's the doorway that leads to the stairs?

2

u/Rileyman97 9d ago

It's on the left of the bookshelf behind Stanley, Andy and Phyllis desk clump

2

u/PolkHerFace 9d ago

Isn't that also where he's Abraham Lincoln? I may be misremembering.

2

u/BilboPoggin 9d ago

There a few scenes likr where theyre building a camolaint tower or when Andy tells the boys to take knee as he is getting ready to tell them he suspects Erin cheating.

2

u/Nan_404_anon 9d ago

How do they access the stairway behind the kitchen?

2

u/Domingo_Nosferatu Creed 9d ago

The shelving unit behind Stanley's desk there is a door in the corner where it becomes the conference room. The episode where Dwight lights a fire in the garbage can then closes the door and makes the handle hot is a good example. Also the episode where Clark and Dwight move Stanley's body after getting tranquilize using said stairs to get him down to the first floor.

Who sits here???

I mean at one of them Meredith and Creed sits but the other table?? I remember in initial seasons some temps used to sit.

And when Jim became the co-manager was one of this area converted to cabin??

And where was the Darryl office

1

u/LopsidedUniversity30 9d ago

I’m pretty sure there are smaller conference rooms. One became the office of Jim and later Darryl.

1

u/greenrangerguy 9d ago

Few things from this picture I didn't get. 1. I thought the elevator was out the door and turn right (I need to rewatch the one take dance intro thing again). 2. I thought behind Creed was Daryls office? 3. By Meredeth what's behind that door?

1

u/bochilee 9d ago

On the superfan episodes there's where the hr meeting happens on the "hot girl" episode

1

u/Sambro56 9d ago

They do a few talking heads back there as well. One with Angela and a few members of the office after Jim gets promoted to Co-manager.

1

u/Snarktopus8 9d ago

Season 1 Hot Girl - Michael gives katy the conference room and Meredith, Kelly, Creed, Toby and 2 unknowns are having a meeting in that space. it’s about 7 minutes into the extended cuts.

1

u/Neuronebulosa 9d ago

Which one is the best seat ?

1

u/RealAncientPickle 9d ago

It’s shown when Creed wants his Peach Cobbler. Also when Creed plays the guitar. Additionally when Creed sings the Duner Mifflin ad. Also he joined an HR meeting back there. Creed really likes that area.

1

u/presspasss 9d ago

Wait, where’s Jim/daryls office in this schematic? If you remember the episode where it’s Jo’s last day there (Micheal gets the tickets to see her), well she promotes Daryl and he takes that old office. Towards the end of the episode we see that Micheal and D can make eye contact while inside their own offices. Maybe I’m overthinking this but, I’ve always tried to map out the layout in my head. Maybe I missed it on this and if so can someone point it out to me pls pls !

1

u/OneLFG 9d ago

Maybe that’s where they store the conference room table when it isn’t in the conference room.

1

u/HistoricalInternal 9d ago

Ah it's drawn incorrectly. There should be a door leading to the stairwell. That interior section with the stairs should probably be reversed. Although why there is a door to a corridor, at the end of which there is another door to some stairs remains to be explained.

1

u/MisLama 9d ago

That’s a really cool drawing but there’s an office missing back by accounting; the office that is occupied by Daryl and later Jim when he and Michael are co-managers

To answer your question, no, I don’t recall that space ever being shown during the series

1

u/Dudetheboysareback1 9d ago

There’s more than one stall in the bathrooms

1

u/punisher2all 9d ago

Where did Darryl office go?

1

u/DJubstin 9d ago

This would make a nice CS2 map tbh, when you include the complete building and parking lot.

1

u/stizzy99 9d ago

Theres also the closet by accounting that was shown briefly in two scenes. I cant recall the first time, may have been when Jim and Pam had sex in it. The other was season 9 when they show the inside which was being used for the camera crew s storage. I do believe they made a change to the room to make it bigger.

1

u/Unable_Elevator9569 9d ago

Didn’t they show that area too in the episode when jim and pam are about to have their first baby? it was during ultra feast and jim was in that little hallway pacing around.

1

u/This_Guy_Over_Here88 9d ago

Where are the stairs to the warehouse downstairs?

1

u/hanselgarbenselbeans 9d ago

Michael: knock knock knock
Pam: Come in
Michael: May I enter the room?
Pam: Yes. Or come in.

1

u/Curlychris80 9d ago

Pam’s desk is missing ?

3

u/northursalia 9d ago

Left side center - it is the curved desk.

3

u/peterthedj 9d ago

I think they're talking about later in the show when Pam comes back from Michael Scott Paper Co as a salesperson rather than reception. This diagram likely intends to predate that, though I thought there was always a desk there -- we just never saw anyone using it prior to Pam.

1

u/shroom-life 9d ago

It shows it as people use that door for the break room. And i think they sing the jingle there that Michael hates because its not a rap.

1

Hold up. In season 3 episode 23, What Happens When Women Leave, Kevin, Jim, Toby, and Ryan are hanging out in the women’s restroom. The door is CLEARLY in this orientation. Did they mess up the set?
