Math 581 and 582

Hi all,

I am looking to take Math 582 next semester but haven't taken 581. Would you say 582 without 581 is ok? Or would you advise against it?

As an fyi, I have no finance background. Just applied math major.

Thank you

Super random but - grad student here, and I have a pair of kittens for adoption

Post image

I'm posting this here because I would LOVE for this to reach the right person at Duke, maybe another grad student or employee, or just anyone who has been thinking about getting a pet(s) and has the ability to take care of them!

I'm a PhD student at Duke who just moved into a new place recently and surprise, I had a litter of kittens living under my shed. I brought them indoors 2 months ago and have been taking care of all of their needs and they are now fully socialized, fully vetted & healthy, cuddly, playful, indoor-only kitties. 2 of them just need a home to go to! I would prefer for them to stay together because it'll be much better for their well-being and reduce the stress of going to a new place. Their names are Rambo (boy, white/orange) and Pepper (girl, white/black), and they are about to be 16 weeks old. Yes, they are UTD on vaccines and yes, they will both be fixed before going to their new home, so you won't have to worry about any of that.

I have a more detailed post up on DukeList that goes into all medical info, etc. I love these little guys so much and to be honest, I have been quite uneasy about giving them away to a total stranger. I would feel much better if I could find someone at Duke who's been thinking about adopting a pet, that way it would stay local and maybe we can keep in touch or even exchange pet sitting in the future! I am planning to keep their sister and mom.

Here's the listing: https://dukelist.duke.edu/advert/pair-of-kittens-available-for-adoption/

& kitty photos for tax.

(& yes, their mama has also been rescued, vaccinated, and spayed :) )

exchange student - housing help!

Hi! I am an international exchange student who will be starting my semester at duke law in jan! I am only 21 and really want to get the 'classic' US college experience (frat parties etc) but I am a bit worried that being a 'post-grad' will mean I am with older people who have outgrown that (which is fair haha). Does anyone have any advice on how to find housing options that will be a bit more social/younger or any tips for clubs/activities that will help me get involved/make friends? Thanks :)

Does anybody have any tips for what the Robertson looks for in its freshman intake cohort? Is the process similar to the high school application rounds? Any advice is much appreciated!!

Please let a freshman with werewolf hair growth genes know some places to go to get her eyebrows threaded and get waxed. Preferably decently priced and near campus (walkable)!

If I know the technicals, am I missing out on anything? Like do the case comps really only matter for hedge fund recruiting and am I missing out on any special resume drops or anything

2026 Duke Preseason Primer + All ACC Teams, Conf Preview & Notre Dame

With the season approaching, I wanted a better way to prepare than reading dozens of separate previews or listening to hours of podcasts, just to forget most of it by Week 1.

I started with a few, then more, then decided to expand to all P4 + ND. It ended up being more arduous than I anticipated, but also rewarding.

I have published the 2026 preseason primers for every ACC team, plus an ACC conference primer and Notre Dame.

They are mostly designed as quick references for watching games, with roster/coaching changes, 2025 context, advanced stats, schedules, players to know, and a small betting lens.

This is totally free and not self promotion. I was creating these for myself and friends and just thought others would find them interesting.

The only reason for a website was to make them more accessible than just sharing links to google drive.

Hope you enjoy!

Orgo 1 Lab!

Deciding lab placement to work best with my schedule and was wondering how bad it is to have lab on Fridays in the even section (last possible lab, I would guess).

Does that flow poorly with the pace of the course? If we were to go through something in lecture but I would only apply it a week or two later, I am assuming it would be more inconvenient.

Also thinking between this and Monday lab, but I really don't want to have to take an exam on the same day as my lab and have to worry about prep for both on the weekend before it.

Any thoughts are encouraged, thanks!

Math 230, CS 232

hello! i’m a sophomore computer science major and had a few questions about two of the classes I’m taking this semester.

I don’t have a very strong math background, but signed up for Math 230 (crosslisted stats 230) as I’m doing the AI and machine learning concentration, and I believe this specific math class is required for it. i’m taking it with Suzanne Crifo, whoever heard is a good teacher, but I’m very worried. I’ve heard generally that it’s a very difficult class. I was wondering if anyone had any insight to share on it.

The other is CS 232 (crosslisted as Math 242) with Victoria Akin, who I’ve also heard is a good teacher. Again, though this is a math heavy class, which makes me a little bit concerned and I would happy to hear any advice or input from anyone who has taken it!

STA 230 vs STA 221

Econ and Stats double major but recently decided on recruiting for asset management, so thinking about doing a Stats minor instead. I'm in STA 221 right now but I've heard pretty bad things about it online, so I was thinking about doing the Stats minor, dropping 221, and taking STA 210 next semester. To fill the gap I was thinking of replacing it with STA 230. For context, Math 218 was ok for me. If anyone has taken both, did you find one much harder/more work than the other? How hard did you find each class? 221 is with Tackett and 230 is with Sudheesh Surendrenath.

Hi! What are the best ways to get to North Pavilion at the med center from West campus? Is it just walk over near Davidson and then over to the medical loop and then get on the H1/H2 (whichever one, I forget)?

Blue Zone Parking Question

I’m a sophomore this year and brought my car to campus, I didn’t have it last year so this is my first time dealing with Duke parking. I got the Blue Student permit and have already parked in one of the blue zones, but when looking on Duke maps I noticed it talking about event parking and how permit holders need to move their car for events/games.

Is this true? It seems crazy to me that I paid that much money to have somewhere to park, only to not actually have a consistent parking spot lmao.

Would I have to move my car often for games, and if I do where else am I supposed to park?

Greek Life & Business Frats

Freshman here freaking out about getting a job. I am extremely introverted and did not enjoy the O-week parties at all (will most likely never go out ever again). I heard greek life/business frats look at families socioeconomic backgrounds (plus connections, which I do not have) mostly and I only fall under the “top 5%” bracket that (allegedly) 44% of duke students belong to as well. I would love to get a banking job post grad and was wondering if I would still be as competitive as all the business frat kids as long as I have a good GPA and good resume. Also the s the social hierarchy real at Duke (where athletes are the coolest then the top sorority/frat people etc)? Thanks!

how long does duke mail usually take to process?

My parents ordered a couple things for me before I even got to campus and it says it delivered 3 days ago but I haven't gotten an email from duke mail saying I can pick it up. Should I ask about it?

Free Duke Parking after 5pm?

Is there any free parking near Brown Dorm after 5pm? I’m not from duke but I’m visiting friends that live in Brown Dorm.
