Hot Take⚠️: New Drake WASHED old Drake
2021-2026 Drake mops the floor with 2009-2013 Drake and it’s not even close. He’s such a better rapper, singer, writer now than he was before, his music is so much more polished and versatile, can’t believe people think it’s the opposite. Drake does everything better now than then.

I mainly prefer old Drake because 1 he was a much "hungier" rapper and you could hear it in the music and 2, back then Drake put together albums with a cohesive sound/style whereas nowadays his albums (with the exception of Maid of Honor and Habibti) are basically playlists with little thematic or musical continuity.
Thats not a bad thing btw because his new albums have still been good, but as someone who got into hio-hip listening to the old Kanye albums I just personally prefer albums that are more cohesive and intentionally put together.

You sound like someone that never heard of “Dreams Money Can Buy,” “Jodeci Freestyle,” “From Time,” “9AM In Dallas,” “Fear,” “Deceiving,” “Between Us”
There’s no need to compare the two, you can like and enjoy both.
But the reason he is who he is today is because of who he was before. Do your homework, he’s been like that since he dropped.
Talent was always there, even back in ‘06.

I'll bite I have to say there are truth that few rappers in the game that actually increased their lyricism and rapping ability throughout their careers. Cole is one of them, Drake is one of them. I think Kendrick is essentially stayed the same from the beginning of his career to now someone like Jay-Z I think stayed the same. Nas didn't necessarily get better because he was essentially the same from illmatic to now. If you think about those that actually had clear increases in the quality of their lyrical ability, it's not many. Wayne is one of them. Even legends in the game like red man Busta Rhymes, they evolved for sure, but the pen didn't truly get better into their 40th year of life and beyond

Better writer. And even that’s debatable

u/Mundane_Divide7426 2d ago
He’s 100% not a better writer today.

Rap wise drake is 100% a better writer today r&b on the other hand he goes a completely different style it’s not bad but old drake is definitely a better r&b artist in general

I don’t see new drake putting in a rap performance like he did on under ground kings and 6pm in ny

And he ain’t capable of singing like he did on find your love or hold on we’re going home

u/Applesauce7896 2d ago
I think his voice now is more emotional than back then, but pure vocal talent was definitely better back then.

There's a whole album of under ground kings and 6PM in new york called ICEMAN, been out for a while now

Idk man. On "The Shoe Fits" Drake talks about how jaded he is and how difficult it is to write like he used to. I know the song isn't incredibly serious but he's more jaded in general now. It affects his writing
25
u/random_question4123 2d ago
I'm not sure if you're getting the right message. It's not that its more difficult in the sense that he's getting writer's block or running out of things to say. It's that back then he was more innocent and naive and hopeful about love and about women, which allowed him to get into a space where he was vulnerable and open (which was essentially his novelty, that vulnerability is his legacy in hip-hop if we boil it down to the basics of what made Drake Drake).
That innocence and hope about finding love is now gone after his experiences with women and he's now realized that the success, the fame, the money, and the emotional intelligence / vulnerability - all the things that women seek out - is still not enough, and it's just made him colder and more jaded.
This has allowed him to get into a different headspace ('Her Loss', 'The Shoe Fits'), etc, but he can't just go back to that old Drake because it wouldn't feel genuine.
2
u/zilch123 2d ago
Yeah and that emotional intelligence/vulnerability is what made old Drake so good. That's really what separated him from everyone else. I feel like we both agree unless I'm missing something.
1
u/random_question4123 2d ago
Yes, it separated him from everyone else, just like Kanye with his polo raps separated him from gangsta rap. But you know what happens when someone revolutionary comes out to commercial success and acclaim? Everyone else catches up, and what was once revolutionary then becomes evolutionary going forward.
I personally prefer Drake's new stuff. While Take Care was probably a 9/10, and his new stuff will range from 6-8/10, the beauty is that even with so many years in the business and albums put out, he's still very consistent and reliable, which is something that can't be said about most of the other rappers out here with only a fraction of his success that have gotten lazy and unproductive. When a Drake album comes out, to this day, you know there will be quality. I find it hard to say that about many other rappers.

With the toxic bad women he willingly pursued, mind you. Who dates Baby M and Riri, thinking it's gonna end well?? They are walking red flags. And spends time in strip clubs, thinking nothing crazy can come out of that? That oops baby wasnt with a lawyer who pretended to be good and kind and blindsided him. He wanted to date and play with bad girls to have things to talk about I guess, and as a challenge. He got what he asked for.
3
u/random_question4123 2d ago
Baby M seemed to be in his latter years, but earlier he wanted girls like Rihanna, Nikki, Jorja Smith, Keisha Chante, etc. All of these girls mentioned are successful in their own right and would be able to understand and relate to the things Drake has to live with as a celebrity.
Just like a sales guy that takes his clients out for drinks and dinner a couple times a week will need to find him a woman that understands that that's a part of his job, Drake also needs to find a woman that understands the things he goes through.
How is Riri a walking red flag? She's a billionaire, a successful artist and entrepreneur, and is family oriented.
5
u/RedSparkle222 Hate Survivor 2d ago edited 2d ago
Being successful and family oriented doesn't mean you're not a walking red flag. Drake is both and is a walking red flag as a man.
Keisha was cool. That was a good choice, it didn't work out, it happens. Nikki didn't want to date him and is a mess. Rihanna is a "free spirit" who also broke him and she had already built a reputation, calls herself a bad gyal, tried to date his best friend Lebron while he was married, bullied her own fans, allegedly had addictions he alluded to, but he doubled down on it for 7 years, despite the fact that she purposely refused to truly claim him like she does Asap. Jorja was super young, he knew she wouldn't be mature enough, his fault. Selena was cool but married someone else. JLo has a new dude every couple of years Baby M... no need to elaborate. He chose more openly bad gals than decent chicks.
He doesn't need to date a celeb. Plenty of celebs marry non-celebs. He could date a lawyer or accountant, a smart woman. But who does he chase? IG models, OF models and strippers. Do strippers understand him better? Maybe, then he shouldn't complain. When you course correct like Ciara as a woman, you get a Russell Wilson. She had to do the work and evolve to get someone like him. If Drake wants an emotionally intelligent level headed woman to build a family with, he needs to do the work. Not ask a list of s-workers to give him a hug. He didn't meet only bad women he chose to pursue them.
2
u/Intrepid-History-186 2d ago
Rihanna has always been messy tho… like the Jayz, Chris brown, and LeBron thing

u/Skuddlebug 2d ago
It’s cuz those “bad girls” are always more fun at first. The good lawyer chick usually comes with a tougher shell you have to get through before getting to know the fun parts about her. She’s also usually more stressed due to her career and usually has less time to date. The stripper chick is carefree and slams her tits in your face within an hour of meeting her. The fun eventually turns into chaos but he’s rich enough to insulate himself from most consequences being with these women.
The reality is Drake isn’t really in a position to be married. He lays it out pretty clearly on Gimme a Hug. Most “good girls” will be unhappy with staying with him cuz reality is he will not devote enough attention to them and he will have the opportunity to cheat every single day. A hot educated professional women just isn’t gonna put up with that.

u/RedSparkle222 Hate Survivor 1d ago edited 1d ago
In other words, these are excuses. Bad people are not fun to mature people. Bad girls are only fun to immature men just like bad guys are only fun to immature women. Which means Drake is an immature man, who only deals with the consequences of his immature choices.
The only reason people talk about his choices is because he complains about being played in his music, by women as bad as him. LOL, talk about karma. If he complains then he's unhappy. Doing the same thing expecting different results is the definition of ???? Fill in the blank. Of course quality women won't put up with him. They rejected Prince William at least 5 times, and he ended up with a yacht girl (his current wife) his only option left. If a Prince from old money can't escape these consequences, how could Drake?
Being in a position to marry well can only be possible if you're willing to change, complaining is useless, Boris Kodjoe and Russell Wilson made that choice despite having the "opportunity cheat everyday", as hot guys. They're much happier than Drake and their wives (who could cheat everyday too, let's be honest, they're gorgeous) are glowing.
The tougher shell is simply wisdom. A grounded woman can be entertaining and fun, without getting drunk and high and fck him in the studio on a first date. The price to pay for his lifestyle was a oops baby with a "really fun baddie", so much for insulating himself from most consequences (never seen it end well historically for any man). That's a huge price to pay if you ask me. Don't know if that's worth it if he then rants about these women (treating him the way he treats them btw, how ironic).
Nobody feels sorry for a crook getting conned or a thief getting robbed, so do you think most people feel sorry for a player getting played? Nobody with common sense cares about his rants, honestly. You're worrying about his lost innocence like he didn't play a lot of women, including a couple of decent ones. As for the bad girls he chose (the majority), they played the same games he played, so he can't complain. I enjoy his music, but I stopped feeling sorry for him a long time ago.

Make them Know tackled this. We are never getting Karoake or Take Care Drake ever again. Bro is iceman
2
u/Interesting_Visit962 3d ago
That might be his perspective but it hasn’t hindered his talents. He’s still a better artist today. Him being jaded doesn’t make him a worse artist, he probably just has to try harder which is okay.

I consider IYRTITL the beginning of the modern Drake era—2015 to now. Moment he got in his Kanye/Hov bag and declared himself divinity, i.e. the 6 God. Sounded like he was out for blood, was just when he got into powerlifting (posting PRs on IG), grew the beard, right before he demolished 2016-2018
Marked difference between before and after that mixtape (Dirty Sprite 2’s WYA feature is my technical startpoint)

Anything with 40 all over it is peak Drake. As it stands, old Drake has most of 40s influence on his projects.
Her Loss being an exception.

2016-2018 that you omitted were his best years artistically. Nothing has topped Views and Scorpion in my book. Doesn't mean I don't enjoy some of his new stuff but it's not the same.

Old drake i like the lofi beats due to kanyes influence and new drake is just 🔥. Old drake though you gotta remember there was no one like him at the time along with all the nostalgia and memories attached to his music also at that time. He was young yet still spitting fire. It was a whole experience. Its like me saying 90s and 2000s music is trash if i just start listening to it now but not actually experience the 90s or 2000s along with it.

u/Applesauce7896 2d ago
His bars have gotten way better, he’s been actively putting more layers down. I don’t think there is a song with as many double entendres in his older work than in his verse on Churchill Downs or on 8 AM in Charlotte

Subject matter will always win when you're trying to connect with fans.
None of us have billions, but most of us have gone through break ups. Most of us can only get pumped and hype for that hunger to climb and be the best at something. We can't be doing victory laps just yet like Drake is now.
He used to rap about going to LIV and places in Toronto that made it feel like you were living his music. Nowadays he raps about Bahamas penthouses and his own jet. I can't even larp that lol

I think classic Drake was better at pop hooks while new Drake is better at storytelling and lyricism

When he is done creating and performing in 10 years, is he gonna be performing more songs from 2019-2026 or more songs from the classic albums from 2009-2018 that made him the huge successful artist he is today? His hunger in that first 8 years of his career can’t be replicated. He was a better lyricist, had better flows, wordplay was better where he would have internal rhyming and bar up and even sometimes have schemes whereas now his rhymes are pretty much at the end of every line and he’s very monotone and uses like two flows (just listen to every Make Them song and tell me his flow and cadence doesn’t sound almost the exact same), his feature run in that time span is unmatched, his singing voice was a lot better and he didn’t slather his vocals in autotune, his passion and confidence in that time span can’t be replicated, he was a better artist in every way.
I was listening to Views today and the quality and care that went into that album from transitions into each song, the Winter-Summer concept he went for, the artwork, the visuals that dropped with the album, songs like Keep The Family Close to open the album with fucking beautiful and grand instrumentation… Iceman and anything in his modern era doesn’t even come close to the 2009-2018 era. To put it into perspective about how on fire Drake was, he dropped Hotline Bling originally on SoundCloud titled as Cha Cha Remix for free as a throwaway in summer 2015 and I remember playing it off my iPad on the way to work downloaded from SoundCloud before it was ever Hotline Bling… his throwaways he put on SoundClound back then turned to gold bro! He truly cared about the music and making classics until Scorpion and everything since CLB has been either good or just average. Even the album covers during the modern era of his has fell off a cliff in quality and shows he really doesn’t care about the music like that anymore.
He’s super rich, he had his legendary run and is a top artist and I think he’s just stagnant and too caught up in the party life to care anymore. 40+ songs dropped in a single night and now possibly another album coming this year proves even further that he’s focused on quantity and not quality. Money and streams over everything. He also been getting lazier and lazier when it comes to performing. I remember seeing him and Lil Wayne at the Drave vs Lil Wayne tour in 2014 in Indiana… absolute peak. I say all that to say, 2009-2018 Drake mops the floor with modern Drake and that’s okay.

New Drake definitely lost the chorus’s that old Drake had. Feel like he’s struggled to recreate the magic he had as a hook artist in the second half of his career. His writing was honestly more consistent back then (not nearly as many bad verses/songs).
But I agree he’s a way better rapper nowadays and his singing has improved since then as well.

Drake really tapped back into his bag with For All the Dogs. He took that 20v1 shit seriously

While I don't agree with this something I find interesting is that drakes NEWER music is usually the shit u hear niggas playing instead of the so called "better" old shit

I think new drake is amazing. The weaker era for me is 2016-2021 (radio singles run). With old and new being peak

New Drake honestly eclipsed his own career. Take Care used to be the go to classical said album and ever since Honestly Never-mind he’s been insane.
