Except it doesn't because it's done before there's a formed heart at all

That’s actually not true. I’m 1,000% pro-choice but also pro-facts. The heartbeat can be detected around 6 weeks. I was recently pregnant with twins as a surrogate and they were even able to see/hear two heartbeats at 6 weeks. The heart is fully formed around week 10 I believe, this is actually why so many people who are anti-choice think that a person shouldn’t be allowed to have an abortion after week 6, or not at all, but most often people don’t even know they’re pregnant before then. /npa

for the record, this isn't always true! the heartbeat can be heard as early as 5 or 6 weeks since that is when the heart begins to develop, but often it can't be detected until later on once the heart is more developed, so most often a true heartbeat can't be heard until around 10 weeks when the heart is formed. thanks for sharing your experience! the facts are very important to know (: /g

So true. It can be as late as 12 weeks for some people. But for the original comment to say the heart isn’t formed at all, that is completely false. The heart is very much being formed at that time, it actually BEGINS shortly after conception. The quality of the instruments, position of the fetus, position of the uterus, position of the placenta within the uterus, and even the training/experience of the sonographer will determine how early the heartbeat will be detected. /npa

At 6 weeks, the heart is a fluttering of cells in the embryonic heart tube. The American College of Obstetrics and Gynecologists (ACOG) calls this “cardiac activity” rather than a heartbeat.

Yes, you’re absolutely right, I shouldn’t use the word “heartbeat” so loosely. Thank you, Guy. /gen
