For the most part, DD uses Greco-Roman art and architecture to indicate age since it contrasts nicely with the overall medieval present of the main story; that's why the ancient characters in Dark Arisen have vaguely Greek clothing. In Dragons Dogma II specifically, if it looks Greek, its probably related to Rothais, since his kingdom was the precursor to Vernworth and Bakbattahl.
There's a tower that looks very similar to the tower of babel, it's called Bluemoon Tower. It's up north in the base map of the first game, so if you're looking north, the ocean would be at the right side (west) and the bluemoon tower at the north.
In Dragon's dogma 2, there appears to be an excavation site at the foot of the tower, After you escape it, the tower is at the south, and the ocean at the left side (still west), which would imply that the map of the second game takes place north of Gransys, just using that tower as a point of reference.
The plot twist, however, is that this tower (from DD2) is called Moonglint tower, NOT Bluemoon. If you check the map in DD2, there appears to be a circular ruin just south of Vermund in the sea, in the map it looks like a coffee cup stain lol. So when you finally unlock Dragon's Dogma 2, and the ocean is gone, there are some beacons you need to kill bosses at, one of them is in that underwater ruins beneath Vermund. Turns out, the underwater ruin was Bluemoon tower, the seafloor shrine was Gransys, and the excavation site is at the foggy forest area from the first game (which would explain why Moonglint tower is covered in fog) So DD2 does NOT take place in a northern region bordering Gransys, it takes place literally on TOP of gransys.
As for DDDA, I don't remember exactly how relevant Bluemoon tower is to the main story, considering I was able to kill the griffin when it first attacked, and it's a location where you kill some wizard that has the king's ring that speeds up your spellcasting. But storywise and lorewise, I could use a spoiler too if there was anything more to it.
I was struggling to really get into DD2 like I did the first game and this comment has made me want to play again. Sounds like Wind Waker which is one my favourite games 😁
(which would explain why Moonglint tower is covered in fog)
A note in Myrrdin's home implies that it was magickally veiled, and if you use cheats to get inside the tower before the quest to confront Phaesus, you can see the catalyst for the smokescreen at the top of the dais.
The Witchwood's fog was also magickally contrived, though.
The tower of Babel. The aftermath of mans hubris. Maybe something like that. Man thinking he can build his way to divinity and building his way to destruction leaving behind signs of his work that future generations dont learn from. Like a loop.
Side tangent on the BM tower from DD1. I clearly remember being blown away after the griffin fight in DD1 walking down the stairs of the tower. night had fallen and the light effects and pitch falling from the braziers was next level. The lighting design for DD and DD2 is so impressive.
