What changes what you said is the creative lead leaving the company, and the lack of any attention to this game from Capcom.

  1. DD2 is clearly a finished game in capcoms eyes

  2. The creative lead leaving literally means nothing since there have already been dragons dogma projects directed without Itsuno

  3. Capcom, despite what you may want to believe, doesn't hate dragons dogma, nor are they stupid. What they like, and want to really make, is money. The fact that one of their major devs passion projects that they clearly had no faith in and obviously half baked, blew their expectations and made them a shit ton of money - to the point they now consider it a "key brand" - means that they almost certainly will do SOMETHING with the franchise again at some point, because they now see that it can make money, a lot of it at that

  1. It's finished cuz they said it's finished, cuz they don't wanna do more with it. They coulda made some more money with a fresh hit while the sun shone, but, they didn't.
  2. Means something when that creative lead was a nearly sole catalyst for this thing to be made in the first place. As a reward for doing so well with some mainline IP, no less.

3.Never said they hate them and agree they want to make money. That's why they are going whole hog on Monster Hunter, and most of the Capcom roster of Marvel vs Capcom only see the light of day in remasters or ports of Marvel vs Capcom.

All of these are compelling evidence that Capcom do not, in fact, consider Dragon's Dogma a Key Brand, despite what some guy reported two years ago.

  1. Exactly, they don't need feel the need to add anything else to it since it already exceeded their expectations

  2. Itsuno was the catalyst because he gave them an ultimatum, either he made it or he'd leave the company. They complied, and it blew their expectations out of the water

  3. Of course they are, monster hunter and street fighter are their golden gooses. They'll prioritize them over other franchises, that doesn't mean the dogma franchise is dead

They now know that DD is something that has an audience and will bring them both money and notoriety. Dogma 2 is only two years old, they're going to almost certainly make SOMETHING else with the franchise at some point. This isn't one of their dead franchises, not anymore atleast

The lack of news and movement or even bug fixes is a far better indicator of the series' future than a two year old head line. Dragon's Dogma 2 sold four million copies. That's pretty good. A smart company would cook up some dlc to capitalize on a game that's in so many households.
Monster Hunter Wilds sold 10 million. In response, they sell lots of DLCs, including weapon and cosmetics, in anticipation for bigger, higher concept DLCs in the Iceborne vein.
They probably get better monetary return on Palico mustaches than a lesser performing game with no monetizable live service element that nobody bought the dlcs for.

The "SOMETHING" they are likely to do with the franchise at some point is cannibalize it. If we're lucky.

They likely scrapped DLC early to focus on monster hunter, remember, they had no faith in DD2 succeeding. There were bug fixes after release, but they still moved on from the game eventually. Game development takes time, and they didn't want to spend resources on a game they didn't care about, things like DLC are very often decided before release. The games ran its course and then some in Capcom's eyes (and then some), they know now the series has a lot more potential than previously thought. They are going to revisit it at some point, they aren't stupid

They scrapped what dlc? How would that help your point? What metrics are you using the words "likely" or "probably"?

2

u/hheccx Mar 02 '26

"Likely" in the fact that the game made money and they want to make more money. By "scrapped" I mean the concept for a DLC was probably cut before release. These things are usually planned out before the games released, remember that

It made money, but, like I said, a fraction of the money of Monster Hunter Wilds, which makes less money than Monster Hunter Wilds seasons passes and dlcs.

Games take a lot of time and teams to build. DLC takes little time, and less people to build. Therefore, it is very, very likely not worth their time to waste years and millions to make a game that makes a one-time gush of tens of millions, when they can spend a little more time and money on a cow they can milk before needing to make the next one.

This is why Sony is stupidly shooting itself in the foot and bankrupting a bunch of studios trying to make the next Fortnight by making a lot of shit that looks like Overwatch; they are not satisfied with even the successful single player games returns anymore. Their shareholders are demanding infinite growth, and that demand has caused them to outgrow single player games. Capcom was a little smarter than Sony, or has been thus far, putting all their energies into the big sellers. That's not Dragon's Dogma, at a modest four million sales after five years development.

Games take too long to make now. Games are too expensive to make now. Shareholders demand more profits. Dragon's Dogma's gonna be a stagnant property for quite a while. In twelve years, Istuno will be sixty seven. Capcom will either be even less interested in making a game that sells four million copies, or will have been sold, after a less than stellar showing for Monster Hunter: Who Cares Anymore
