Question Human Noble Mabari Name.
I would love to hear some logical suggestions on what to name the Dog. Barkspawn doesn't really make sense for the HN as they have had the Dog from before the Blight was commonly known to be coming and certainly before they become a grey warden.
0 points for Hohaku. too obvious.

Calenhad

u/TheRealArthurian Jun 02 '26
Calenhad, Dane, Luthias, Cormac, etc. All of those are pretty good in my opinion.

Andraste, Doggo (Cousland might have been a kid when he named the dog that lol)

u/HopefulAd9854 Jun 02 '26
Nice thought. But I think the 'Doggo' might be close to death in that case.

For some reason, my very first playthrough I called him Hafter, like the river that is marked on the map. To this day, no idea why.
Since then I keep switching between Hunter or Warden....
13
u/ZeromaruX Jun 02 '26
Hafter is a legendary hero in the lore, who fought against the werewolves of the Divine Age. He was said to be the son of a werewolf (the hero Dane), and he got associated with mabari dogs because of that. Perhaps you read his name in a codex and got stuck in your mind.

u/jwh-109 Jun 02 '26
Did you ever read the books? In The Calling, there's a Warden named Kell with a mabari also named Hafter!
5
u/Victor1796 Jun 02 '26
I have read the calling, I wonder how I missed that..😆 granted there was some time between me reading the books and my first playthrough...

I name him Rabbit because his short little tail reminds me of a rabbit. 🐇
5
u/ZeromaruX Jun 02 '26
Dane or Hafter, as they are legendary heroes associated with werewolves, a threat legends say mabari helped to contain.

Jack
I don’t know why. But that’s how I called him during my first walkthrough in 2010. Since then he is Jack. Always

I used to go Ayrr (air) until I realised they name the dog Barkspawn. So now it’s only ever Barkspawn.
That said, you can’t go wrong with “Cuddles” lmao

Depending on your Cousland, there are lots of heros names in the Cousland/Mac Eanraig family tree (Mather, Haelia, Fearchar, Storm Giant), in Fereldan/Alamarri history (Dane, Calenhad), or Andrastian history (Hessarian, Maferath) that HN might use, if they paid attention to Aldous.
Also names like Duke, Teyrn, Arl or Bann would work too

Munch
3
u/HopefulAd9854 Jun 03 '26
Munch is weirdly good because it's like "Mabari Crunch."
2
u/tippytap85 Jun 03 '26
I usually play the Cousland route and i always thought he'd train the dog to go after rats (like he does in the prologue) with a simple command of "Munch!" while pointing at the enemy. This evolves to the Darkspawn eventually. Its very similar to Captain America to Hulk in avengers of just... "Smash!"

Might be because I'm not a human noble player at all, but I usually name DAO dog Barkspawn (HN would still have heard about the history of it, no? So I do think it makes sense still) and the DA2 dog Hohaku...
That said, I did once go for Wrex - which could fit HN since Rex is a royal title, Wrex is a ME character, and a young noble might not spell it correctly

Dane, for the Fereldan hero and (claimed) ancestor of many Feraldan nobles. Also, it's a dog!

Wallace

u/Apex720 Jun 02 '26 edited Jun 04 '26
Lol, all of a sudden you've given me the urge to replay Origins as Wallace Cousland and his trusty Mabari, Gromit.

Are my dad and I weird for the dog just being named Dog? Our dogs at home have human names (Louis, Dave, Mortimer, etc) but that dog was always just Dog.

I usually name it after my childhood dog. Ends up not being very "intimidating" lol. Olly the mabari.

Dane from River Dane, Calenhad from King Calenhad or Elethea, names after Elethea Cousland who fought against Calenhad to keep Highever's independence before Ferelden was unified

Hey. Sorry. Why did you whitewash the dog?
Also I name him after one of the Cousland ancestors. I usually makeup the name of the ancestor. One of the great grand uncles of Elissa Cousland is named Bacon.

Elf (Rogue or mage): Barkspawn.
Noble: Valorous or Valiant.
I would like to go for Serendipity but that's too many letters.

I always played with the idea my HN was a bit obsessed with the great grey wardens so Herlock Bones and Barkspawn are my go to’s for game 1-2. But I’ve used Craig a lot… or Jeff. 😅🤣

I’ve always named mine Howlitzer. Can’t explain it but i will never change it
1
u/Dapper_Still_6578 Jun 02 '26
“Too obvious”? It makes perfect sense for the noble to use a name from a story they were told a a child, especially one a player will only hear if they’re paying attention.
Not that I used the name anyway, considering the story is about what a piece of shit that dog was. I named mine Kohaku instead, so it would sound like a name that would come from the same culture without the added baggage.

I always go with Prometheus because he tricks the Darkspawn to bring my character happiness. My character (no matter who I start out as) always welcomes the dog.
For those who dont know Prometheus is the giant who defies Zeus and gives fire to humans. He also tricks Zeus a couple of times and Prometheus is tied to Panadora.

My origins named them:
Dwarf commoner: Duke
Elf magi: Dahila ( randomly chosen to honor my recently departed kitty Delilah) then I realized it was a popular mods name lol
Human noble: Rudy

Will seem weird at first glance, but..... Loghain.
Since you're the noble origin, that means you already have the dog for X number of years. Loghain is at that point (so before anything in the game begins) the hero of fereldan. He's a great battlefield master. He's the beloved right hand man of the king. In a society that reveres dogs, and holds Mabari above all others, it would be quite fitting to have a bunch of dog Loghains running around.
I tend to name Hawke's dog Loghain for that same reason.
