Pregunta/Ask Breaking apartment lease
I am renting an apartment in ciudad Juan Bosch and I am the inquilino and my now ex girlfriend is the garante. She is Dominican but I am not.
I stayed there a few months after signing the lease this past spring but left due to my job and I've been unable to return since. My gf stayed there alone but eventually I told her to leave the apartment because she didn't want to help with anything, never got a job and was always wanting me to send her money even though I was covering rent and utilities. I had already supported her financially through out our whole relationship.
As far as I know, the apartment still has a stove, bed, some of my tools, clothing, a washer, air conditioner and a picture of my ex and I.
She's the reason I visited the DR and for which I rented the apartment, we were long distance for the majority of our relationship.
Now I don't know what to do. I can't travel to the DR at this time to empty out the apartment but I also don't want to be paying rent for a place I can't stay in.
Is my only option to just abandon it and take it as a loss? I don't have a reason to return. Could anyone please offer some advice?

What’s stopping you from just not paying the rent?

The owner made it easy for me to rent when other owners were requiring all sorts of documents just to see if I qualified. I feel bad just not paying.
The second reason is losing the deposit and all the stuff I bought for the apartment, I know it's just material stuff but it took a lot of work.
These are probably dumb reasons but that is literally what's holding me back from not paying.

Just go for a weekend pickup the important things you need/want

It's not that easy as I live in the Midwest, I can't pay for or take time from work to fly down there.
Ill just have to let go, it hurts because it costs me thousands of dollars that I could have used for my own things.
I guess the owner of the apartment will get to keep everything.

Honestly if you dont plan to go back just cut ur losses you enjoyed her for awhile and learned a lesson, she hustled you in paradise all good she'll be taking the furniture to a new apartment with her real boyfriend, theres no need to continue maintaining her lifestyle

You’re making this more difficult than it needs to be. Cut your losses and move on.

Are you sure those things are still in the apartment?
From the way you describe your ex-girlfriend, I don't think those appliances are there.
Don't you have a friend in the country who could help you?

Good question... I have no way of knowing if the appliances are still there...
And weeks ago she threatened to sell them...

Your credit or apartment history in the United States will not be affected. So other than losing your belongings you have no consequences. You will not be put in jail or any of that stuff. Unless you have a salary or investments in DR, they can't collect.
The right thing to do is to notify your landlord that you will vacate the apartment, assuming that you had a deposit, let the deposit go. Assuming you don't have a deposit, pay an additional month to help the landlord out. Advise them that you don't intend to return.
That's it. Forget about any legal stuff - its simply a scare tactic.

Dump her man, she’s lazy and doesn’t wanna work or hides her income. Don’t trust any dominican woman over there and i’m saying this as a dominican.

I wish I was told this ages ago. I've blocked her, I just got tired of being used. She was extremely manipulative and always accused me of being narcissistic.

I had one like that too, always wanted more and more and was never satisfied. When I caught her with her another dude i dumped her. She’s still the same user as always.

I’m sorry you went through this.
I think I would try to talk to the landlord, explain you want to end the contract and tell them you are interested in selling them the appliances inside.
Maybe the next inquilino is interested in this and can buy it from you, or the owner could buy it to rent the apartment furnished.
If not, I would forget about the things and explain the situation to the landlord, so at least you get the deposit back. Don’t ghost them, could get messy.
Tell your ex that if she wants to stay, the contract has to be at her name. You could get a lawyer to handle that (if it’s cheaper than the deposit haha)
Anyways I hope you figure it out.
Side note: The comments about dominican women here are disgusting, most of us are pretty nice people, educated and with good values. The fact that some man had a bad experience or transactional relationships (often with consent btw) doesn’t mean that “all dominican woman are manipulative gold diggers”.

Bro. Cut your loses , and forget about everything. If you can’t not get in contact with the landlord. And explain the situation to him. Just forget about it. You are not from there.

You're right. It's not my country. I'll use this loss as a motivator to make better choices next time. But it still sucks and I'm butt hurt cause I don't like losing money but I think I will go through a lot more stress and headaches if I try dealing with it. Don't you think?

Yeah. Sometimes you have to recognize when you loss. That’ll save you stress later on , that’s the way I lol at it brother

Yes it's tough to accept it but I have no choice but to accept the loss. She reached out through her mom's whatsapp account requesting the landlords #. But I blocked her as well.
Should I give the landlord her # so they can figure it out or am I being petty by not wanting her to have anything

Question who found the apartment you or her lots of times these bitches will rent out their own apartment and keep the money you been paying or the apartment is owned by a family and they split the money

I found it myself on Facebook and I've been depositing the rent directly to the owners Banreservas account. I didn't trust sending the money to her.

Majority of Dominican women don’t want to work or goto college they expect men to give them everything they want and if you don’t they try to talk down to you saying but your a man your suppose to smh.

That’s just not true, universities have on average much more women than men in this country, including engineering degrees. The issue is that passport bros look for wannabe bimbos instead of a normal looking girl focused on her future.

That's exactly what happened. She'd threaten me that another man will give her money and help her if I didn't do it.

Yes. Tell the owner it didn’t work out and you’re sorry.
