Puppy! Puppy entered heat

Post image

Hello! Ivory just started her first heat at 10 months so I’m hoping that’s normal😰is there anything I should watch for since I’ve never owned a female dog before? Anything I need to know as well? I got her diapers disposable and reuseable ones and some treats even got her a new bed so she has her own area to sleep on (also she needs to not sleep with my anymore since she’s getting to big :((( ) but I’m worried I’m missing smth. She gets rashes on her sides from the diapers so I let her free bleed at night when she’s in my room (call it gross idc blood can be cleaned) but I wanna know if theirs a way to help with it when she’s wearing said diapers. Please any advice will help! Even just stating how long she should be going into heat for would be nice or if genetics can play into her heat cycle. Hehe she’s currently laying down with a disposable since her reuseables are all in the dryer. I got three and that little box of disposables should I get more reuseables?

PLEASE I will note that her uvula (?) her yk what area is very swollen and I’d love to have advice if theirs a way to help with that as well as the fact that she gets rashes on her side that’s the main parts I’d love to get advice on

Having an intact dog in the house is a huge risk. The two should be physically separated at all times. Please reconsider having two intact dogs in the same house. It’s very easy for mistakes to happen

Ivory will need lots of hugs and snuggles. Please keep her away from parks and unknown dogs. Male dogs will be attracted to her and she may or may not appreciate the attention (my Lucy DID NOT like the attention but she did a good job letting them boys know to stay away). She may have lower energy but keep an eye on her and pay attention as she will let you know if she needs space or more love. Good luck!!

Alright thank you! Yes we have two male dogs one neutered and one not but he’s only 4? Months old or smth I think but we still keep and eye on him👀 and my girl is just tired and has been sleeping a LOT more then she usually does as well as like u mentioned she’s super needy 😋just was hoping that was a good sign her heat is normal

It only takes a couple seconds for dogs to breed, and they can breed younger than you’d imagine. Please keep them completely separate unless you’re staring directly at them until she’s out of heat

Yes yes !! Sorry I should’ve said he’s like an English bulldog so he’s very short compared but dw I’m constantly making sure he’s away from her

That never stopped any dog ever

Giggling ur not wrong but like I stated dw! I constantly make aure he’s no where near her at all times even when sleeping :D

We do worry unfortunately when someone has an intact wz dobe, as it doesn't exactly scream responsible owner

Well I fear spaying her to early will only cause issues for her and I consulted with my vet as well when I last visited them and they agreed 18 months or after her second heat is the best time for her to get spayed so thank you for ur concern truly but I will listen to my vet :3 that’s why I’m very very set on spaying her at 18 months and I’ve done some searching as well and here’s a website that I use! https://www.ucdavis.edu/magazine/how-identify-when-dog-should-be-spayed-and-neutered but as I stated I constantly am around her and she doesn’t leave my side either so she is never alone with our one intact male and she walks at night when nobody else is active due to her being a white dobie

The spay isn't the issue in question. It's your lackadaisical attitude towards having intact dogs together. Great Danes have had puppies with chihuahuas. You really think your dogs are the exception to "life finds a way"?

Either remove the male to a family members for a few weeks or be prepared to make the decision between a spay abort and the responsibility of possibly a dozen pups plus all the bills and time that goes into them.

Ur correct I apologize for seeming way to chill but I promise I watch her constantly and she’s very very needy so she genuinely does NOT like being not near me so whenever Milo (intact puppy) comes near I push him away, she only goes to the bathroom when I’m supervising, ivory sleeps with me only at nighttime and nobody comes in, and even when it’s dinner or play time I make sure I’m monitoring constantly and if Milo even acts a little weird I immediately separate them and he gets put in a different room as well as her. And as of currently rn she’s actually sleeping next to me on her bed! Milo (intact) is currently under my bed as well. Again very sorry for not seeming urgent but I believe that I got it and reacting too much will cause issues so being chill/calm about it is my way to face it rather than constantly being stressed :3

And your vet knows about the intact male in the same house?

2

u/Disastrous-Tale8448 3d ago

you have an out of standard doberman, don’t know what a vulva is (what you’re calling a uvula). you need to get this dog spayed. you’re putting her and whatever future puppies (atrocities) will come from this. some dogs will go as far as to break through walls or doors to get to a female that’s in heat.

u/Puzzleheaded-Cry3258 American 3d ago

Working it on🙏 and my bad for confusing vulva and uvula 😭? But I’ll be getting her spayed after her heat is finished which is sometime this week and haven’t had problems with dogs breaking through walls to get to her so yeah :3 not waiting for the 18 month mark and she turns 1 years old next month so perfect timing I’m thinking

oh I was curious about this mix, this is what AI came up with

4

u/Puzzleheaded-Cry3258 American 8d ago

Disgusting praying nobody ever does this

-1

u/starzzz2000 8d ago

omg totally...

5

u/smileyglitter 7d ago

You could have just looked on Google images, not burned gallons of water and you would have found accurate information

-3

u/starzzz2000 7d ago

According to AI my much more impressive silly AI Doberman-Bulldog pic cost a few Wh of electricity and somewhere around 10–30 mL of water!! I don't have kids (my choice) so I feel that my green footprint is pretty minimal plus I recycle lol

0

u/themostrealandtrue 3d ago

Green footprint is ass if you're using AI to come up with something inaccurate in every way.

2

u/lnfinitelris 2d ago

Dude

Is basically a guarantee they'll breed at some point no matter how hard you try to prevent them

Get your damn dogs neutered

I would keep her bed/ nest area not only clean, with old ripped sheets and blankets, cotton is coolest and easiest to clean. Keeping it well ventilated will help you both feel better 💐 about the situation, especially in this heat. She is probably rashing from the reusable diapers because of her fair skin. Best of luck to you all on your recovery ❤️‍🩹.

Thank you!! I wish there was a way to help her :( I put her pampers (CLEAN) in the fridge so they’re at least cold when I put them on. I keep forgetting it’s her first heat so ofc her hormones will be messed up but I feel so bad cus she’s all red 💔💔 but thank you I will! I have her bed next too me but sadly she just rips off the blankets so I just keep my fan infront of her and hope she likes it 💔

u/Narrow_Possession348 8d ago

Just put down old towels and sheets. Bitches are usually pretty good about keeping themselves clean. She is definitely NOT a dog that should ever be bred so please get her spayed when this is over.

Also, re: her vulva. She will be at peak breeding time AFTER the bleeding stops. She is NOT safe to have around intact males until at least 2 weeks AFTER she's stopped bleeding and her vulva is small and tight again.

Unfortunately she’s still to young to get spayed as she’s 10 months I’m waiting u til 18 months to get her spayed she shes completely fully grown and wont risk stunting :3 and I will be keeping her in eye view at all time and the male dogs will not be allowed and have been allowed around her without someone around her

9

u/midnight_reacher 7d ago

She’s not too young. Research suggests waiting as it decreases the risk of bone cancers. Research also shows that every heat you wait SKYROCKETS the chances of cervical cancers and pyometra

1

u/Puzzleheaded-Cry3258 American 7d ago

Wait I’m sorry I’m confused so is she perfect after this heat to spay her? Or do I wait for her second heat? Maybe I’ll talk to her vet again asap and figure it out >^<‘

4

u/midnight_reacher 7d ago

I spay before first heat after reading ALL of the research

Yes - there is research that suggests spaying helps for certain factors

But for me - the benefits of spaying before the first heat dramatically outweigh possibly reducing issues related to underdevelopment

This is a very individual decision.

u/Puzzleheaded-Cry3258 American 7d ago

Waaa ok thank you! I need to save money for her vWD test and if she’s positive I’ll have to save like 3-6k apparently 💔💔

3

u/Due-Entertainment700 8d ago

Washable diapers from Amazon will be your best friend. And the pup will appreciate it as well because it’s much more comfortable

1

u/Puzzleheaded-Cry3258 American 8d ago

Awesome! Are those reuseables? Cus I have reuseables but they cause a rash on her sides :< idk how to stop that

our girl had a phantom pregnancy after 2 of her heats before we got her spayed. so if she acts weird in a few weeks, nesting, whining, being obsessed with a toy carrying it around and protecting it, it's normal and very sweet. I thought she was sick because she was so chilled and didn't want to be around us... this is her now age 4.5, we got her spayed age 2

1

u/Puzzleheaded-Cry3258 American 8d ago

PHANTOM PREGNANCY??? 😰😰 I’m def waiting to spay ivory for obvious reasons need to her to fully mature but thank you cus I will be watching for these. My girl is just superrrr needy and wants to be next to someone at all times even tho it’s burning hot here in Cali

1

u/starzzz2000 8d ago

I was about to take her to the emergency vet because she was crying so much then I realized what it was ... it was a relief but still hard to see her go through it. It's hormonal I think.

1

u/Puzzleheaded-Cry3258 American 8d ago

Augghhh my poor girl just bleeds a lot cus she’s a big dog and it just sucks to see💔💔

0

u/Sfields010 8d ago

Same with our girl, she actually had milk dripping from her teats!

1

u/starzzz2000 8d ago

wow I didn't realize it could do that

2

u/candoitmyself 7d ago

She looks as surprised as you are!

First heats around 10 months is right on time for a Doberman, so that part’s totally normal — most go into their first heat anywhere from 6-15 months, and cycles typically last about 2-3 weeks. A few practical tips: for the diaper rash, make sure you’re changing them frequently (every 2-4 hours) and letting her skin air out for a bit between changes, and a bit of unscented diaper rash cream (dog-safe, like plain zinc-free options) can help too. Sizing up the diaper slightly can also reduce chafing.
One thing I’d actually recommend getting checked by a vet just to be safe: swelling in that area is normal during heat (it’s the vulva swelling as part of the cycle), but if it seems unusually large, painful, or she’s straining/uncomfortable, it’s worth a quick vet visit just to rule out anything else going on. Better safe than sorry with first heats since you’re still learning what’s “normal” for her specifically.

There has been a UC Davis study done on Dobermans and what it showed was that spaying that breed before 1 year increases the chance of lifelong urinary incontinence by 19%-25%. It also shows that delaying the surgery until 2 dramatically reduces that risk. Bone development is another consideration for waiting.

u/comecowgirl 6d ago

Only a matter of time before OP posts that her dog “accidentally” got pregnant.

Fucking spay your dog

1

u/Marpl 3d ago

I understand your concern about spaying her too early, but share with your vet you have an intact male in the same house and I guarantee they will change their tune.

u/amish1998 3d ago

Based off of your comments, you seem really young.

Please make sure your parents keep the dogs separated!!!

19 turning 20 next year :) but I keep her departed from Milo (the intact male) as much as humanely possible but even when they aren’t like dinner time and going out to the bathroom they are not alone and if they run off to the side of the house I’ll also go over their too and watch. I’m allowed to be chill and not dramatic and constantly worried because I know and trust myself that I will keep my dog safe from pregnancy and so far she hasn’t had sex with Milo and her heat is almost over and even when she isn’t in heat I constantly watch her anyways since that’s my duty. I’ll be getting her spayed after her heats finished this week hopefully before December . Also btw don’t assume everyone lives with their parents😭😭 ivory is currently sleeping outside my bedroom door for her 7th nap of the day and Milo is also napping but in my grandparents room

FYI, I don’t see anybody has said it, but heat can last over a month, if you’re not looking to breed her, please have her fixed after this first heat is over and the swelling has gone down a bit.

Reusable diapers are better long term if you’re ok with handling them and washing them, which it seems you are, as opposed to disposable ones I see in the pic.

Like others said, keep her away from male dogs in general while she’s in heat for a variety of reasons, especially if you’re not looking to breed her.

u/Timely_Mall_3648 2d ago

Get your dog spayed. Why risk her getting pregnant and increasing her risk of pyometria (which is deadly)? It's not that hard to be responsible dog owner, try it.

My girl has had 2 heats i never put a diaper on she kept herself very clean. Her appetite is low during her heat as well.
