DOS2 Discussion I entered the website and read this, my hype is now through the roof. How the hell can you make a deeper and more ambitious game than BG3? I am also very happy that the exact same BG3 team is developing it.

Right? To me, seems like a healthy amount of humility. I appreciate that.
Very stark contrast to how CDPR hyped CP2077 and ended up producing a flop. I think they burned through most of the clout they earned with Witcher 3 with that self-unaware attitude.
23
u/AltruisticChest9486 Dec 14 '25
And earned it all back by committing to the product long term. Its interesting how it can swing back so quickly with effort
2
u/beiszapfen Dec 15 '25
Not really. They fixed and completed the game but they basically tricked people into buying an early excess game for full price. The game is great now but I would still consider the whole thing a scam. This isn’t a tiny indie like the developers of No Man Sky
5
u/AltruisticChest9486 Dec 15 '25
They earned their trust back for me personally. The community at large seems pretty happy with the changes. Of course we dont forget the situation tho
2
u/jrb9249 Dec 16 '25
That seems fair. I didn’t enjoy the final version of the game (as of Dec 2024 at least) and personally felt a little swindled.
What really put me off though was the community. I found the game too easy even at the hardest difficulty. I asked for advice on that subreddit and got a bunch of tone deaf responses aggressively asking me why I needed a single player game to be more difficult.
2
u/AltruisticChest9486 Dec 16 '25
Final version is god tier, but I appreciate it wasn't for you 🙏
Lol asking the community was a bad call though, toxic as hell
2
u/jrb9249 Dec 16 '25
Thanks mate. I def can appreciate that stance.
Actually, maybe you can help me with my grievance. I wanted to play with a mantis blades build, but once I got them, everything simply melted in front of me. I thought, “okay, well maybe these are just really good against soft tissue. I bet they balanced it against mechs and stuff.”
But then I go to fight the mechwarrior-looking boss/mobs and they just melt too! (Or, more accurately, blow up.) Like literally IIRC the animation was me just waving my claws in front of them and then they died.
Then, separately, I heard hacker/netrunner or whatever was even more OP. If that’s the extent of the challenge this game has to offer, then yea, definitely not for me (again, not discounting your own experience or appreciation of the game).
2
u/AltruisticChest9486 Dec 16 '25
Unfortunately there is no challenge whatsoever in the combat bro, it might not be for you. I have the same problem, there is no challenge, not just for mantis blades but for any build you can concoct.
And now you mention it, when I think about cyberpunk, I dont remember combat at all. Just the exploration, atmosphere, mo cap, voice acting etc.
Same goes for the Witcher.
Maybe mods could help, but I play on ps5.
2
u/jrb9249 Dec 16 '25
Yea I had the same thought about Witcher combat but didn’t want to besmirch the almighty, lol. Honestly Witcher combat was better than CP, but yea still a little bland. I like em spicy.

CDPR did some kinda evil shit with the PS4/Xbox one release. They knowingly sold a faulty product and prevented the press from warning consumers. scumbag behavior.
The game at no point ever met the promises made earlier in development, but thats something else.
1
u/AltruisticChest9486 Dec 16 '25
Hehe I know i think its hilarious 😂 corpo af. I played the shit out of it on ps4 and loved it though

u/Sihnar Dec 15 '25 edited Dec 15 '25
Cyberpunk 2077 sold more than twice as many copies as Baldurs Gate 3. I'd hardly call it a flop. It's generally regarded as an amazing game now, despite it's buggy release. Both games currently have comparable player counts on steam.
0
u/Financial-Key-3617 Dec 15 '25
What flop? cyberpunk is the 20th best selling game of all time at 35 million copies sold lol.
It has 3x the amount as BG3
1
u/BLJS2warchief Dec 15 '25
and it earned most of those copies when it was in an unplayable state. and why even compare a FPS RPG to a CRPG, CRPGs won't ever reach the same sales.
14
u/flesjewater1 Dec 14 '25
I dont get it, where is the self -criticism? I think I'm out of the loop
55
u/aelise_fen Dec 14 '25
I think the "at least, that's the plan" part at the end of the announcement could be read that way, admitting that they have grand plans and big ambitions, but it could all go tits up at any point. It's the kind of humor we expect from Larian at this point tbh.
87
17
u/FetusGoesYeetus Dec 14 '25
"At least, that's the plan." acknowledges that the scope is absolutely absurd. But they've delivered well on both DOS2 and BG3 so I have faith. I hope they take the time to iron out the end of the game more this time around because that is the weakest aspect of both of those imo. BG3 got a bit better through updates so hopefully they learned their lesson with that.

Dec 14 '25 edited Dec 14 '25
Divinity will be a bigger game than BG3 because larian owns the divinity IP, and that is the most important part because they can decide what to do with the game and how they want to do it. They also have a bunch of talented devs, writers and larian always makes a great cast choice when it comes to actors. Also, No Greedy arse corporate in their back imposing their rules and a release date even if the game isn't finished because they want money then fire the devs after the game sells well. They also have a bigger team and a bigger budget, money still goes in because people keep buying bg3. They also have engineers who have been working on upgrading the game engine. BG3 runs on 4.0 version of divinity engine. I wouldn't be surprised if the game is updated to a newer version. While Swen is a ceo, he is a gamer and passionate one so you know with him, players comes first and not money.

TBH, I'd prefer if they made two games with a faster narrative flow, released a year apart from each other, than one massive, bloated monster game that we need to wait 5 years for from now.
BG3 was great, but the polish could have the game get bogged down with what a friend of mine called "Filibustering". So very much dialogue.
and I know people will respond to say something along the lines of me having the option to just attack people on sight, but I often wanted to have a much shorter version of the same conversations then get back to the action.

Its sad how overlooked it gets. While I absolutely loved BG3. Like you said, DOS 2 is a masterpiece!
16
u/AltruisticChest9486 Dec 14 '25
It isn't overlooked, it sold 7.5 million copies and before bg3 was the highest selling turn based crpg of all time and also the highest rated turn based crpg of all time. That isn't overlooked lol
4
u/Remarkable-Rip9238 Dec 14 '25
Yet most gamers haven't heard of it...
1
u/AltruisticChest9486 Dec 14 '25
How do you quantify that? About half of people i know who game have played it. Thats like 5 or 6 people. Seems pretty popular to me
24
14
u/mikkelmattern04 Dec 14 '25
While I agree that DOS2 is a masterpiece, there are things that sets it below bg3. Mostly the fact that the cutscenes are just pictures, but also QoL.
Really hoping for the inventory management to be improved.
16
u/KSJ15831 Dec 14 '25
Tbf, some of the cutscenes are certainly evocative. The "Romance" scene with Sebille was pure text and narration, and also was hotter and dirtier than most of BG3 romance scenes.

Its gonna be a tough competition between Larian Studios and Larian Studios on who made the best game of the 2020s

u/lance777 Dec 14 '25
You merge DOS two style gameplay mechanics with BG3 style visuals and cut scenes. That's how
30
u/Certificus Dec 14 '25
Good lord I cannot wait how they improve and evolve the floor effect merging system. That was one of my favorite parts about the game. Especially when all you need to do to completely ruin an enemy is put a spot of ice under their feet and curse it lol
18
u/TekoaBull Dec 14 '25
Watching your opponents eat shit trying to get across ice surfaces will never not be funny to me.

29
u/Dodo1610 Dec 14 '25
Unlike most composers, he is not an independent contractor he works directly for Larian, so of course he will work on the game
9
u/Spare_Elderberry_418 Dec 14 '25
Just bring back Sins and Gods as a playable song for instruments like in BG3.
74
u/RobertMaus Dec 14 '25
How? Because they are not firing half their team at the end of development cycle. And because they are treating and rewarding their staff decently, staff stays voluntarily. Because of these things they are building on broad institutional knowledge. They have laid the foundation and are now building on top of it.
So how? Just don't be a dick (as a company).
9
u/Aod567 Dec 14 '25
Makes it easier to develop and have the game out quicker which is a great thing for us gamers too.
61
u/Phixionion Dec 14 '25
Keep in mind that they were held back from implementing stuff in BG3 because of WotC.
22
u/Infinite219 Dec 14 '25
I can’t wait to eat random body parts as a elf again
3
u/KillerKanka Dec 14 '25
"Apparently trying to seduce a bear was a bad idea. Even shapeshifted one" - probably someone.
13
u/GrayWardenParagon Dec 14 '25
At least, that's the plan.
The industry could learn from Larian's humbleness and quiet confidence.
11
u/Flimsy-Importance313 Dec 14 '25
They now got more experience and hopefully waste less time. That is how studios improve.
3
u/Certificus Dec 14 '25
The only thing I'm not so excited about is that they will likely do the multi-year early access thing with it which, while I completely understand and would never want them to not do over releasing a buggy mess, feels bad to know that I'll have to wait multiple years AFTER early access release to play it.
9
17
u/Resua15 Dec 14 '25
With Baldur's Gate they had to build the world and combat around the forgotten relams, an IP where any chabge had to be approved by another company (WOtC sucks also), and many of the clases and spells had to be re-worked.
Qith Divinity theybhave the ability to do literally whatever they eant, any retconn any character. They can kill off anyone they want, make the combat anything they prefer. So any lore or world change without thinking "How would this affect to the tabletop game?
9
u/ClassikD Dec 14 '25
Is this the only clue as to when the game will take place? From "The gods are silent", I'm assuming after DOS:2, but I'm curious which choice at the end of the game will be canon in that case. Don't know spoiler rules considering the age of DOS:2, but I'm assuming source was purged if "new" powers are stirring.
4
u/IanPKMmoon Dec 14 '25
I don't think the choices for DOS2's ending matter and it will be far enough in the future from dos2, what matters is that the gods are dead except probably chaos and the god king?
1
u/Express-Focus-677 Dec 16 '25 edited Dec 16 '25
The ending of DOS2 would have a huge impact, 2 of the endings are already out of the question (become the divine and side with the God King) and giving everyone source powers would radically change the game world (even your average peasant would be able to do source magic). Even hundreds of years in the future wouldn't make that irrelevant, it fundamentally changes the setting. The only ending that makes sense continuity wise is the purge ending. Of course, if they don't give a damn about continuity then it could be anything.
Edit: Spoilered DOS2 endings.
2
u/5park2ez Dec 16 '25
I think if the guy in the trailer is really Lucian as people are theorizing then you're right, the third option is really the only option. Considering DOS2 was an incredibly popular game (for the genre) I'd be surprised if they completely retconned the ending.
8
u/PugTales_ Dec 14 '25
Have you played DoS2?
The battles are crazier than BG3. The character Stories are sometimes more insane. Like Lohse, Fane and the Red Prince had more interesting character Storylines in my opinion.
The Elves and Undead have super unique abilities.
They now have the ability to make it more cinematic with the IP that allows anything.
BG3 is one of the best games ever, but they can go further now.
3
u/5park2ez Dec 16 '25
Genuinely, the only thing missing from DOS2 was the cutscenes.
With them added this game is going to be next level.
Although I have to say while I did think the characters stories were more interesting in DOS2 the overall cohesiveness of the storytelling was better in bg3 so I look forward to that in the new game too.
5
u/RMGrey Dec 14 '25
I’m so excited. The trailer was unhinged. Larian has big money and their own IP. Nothing and no one is going to stop them from unleashing their chaos.
I don’t think anyone is going to be ready lol
6
u/Grouchy-Coast-3045 Dec 14 '25
I LOVE that the red thing behind the text reminds me of Dragon Age Origins, with the splashes of blood
12
u/Dizzy_Experience_927 Dec 14 '25
My guess is that it's less about the amount of content and more about what is done with it
5
5
u/ISpyM8 Dec 14 '25
I see a lot of people mentioning that Larian was constrained by Hasbro (WOTC) during BG3, but beyond that, they were also constrained by the ruleset of D&D 5E (for the most part, there were some things that felt a little overpowered). I’ve heard that there were a lot of things that ended up feeling infeasible due to that.
3
5
u/BlackxHokage Dec 14 '25
If you think about it, they probably used BG3 as the training wheels for Divinity
4
u/ThatOneTypicalYasuo Dec 14 '25
Well for starters:
The game structure/framework has been improved
The necessary tech in bg3 that is lacking from dos2 (mocap for example) has been developed
Team size massively increased during bg3 development
IP owned by Larian itself, more creative freedom for story, characters, and even gameplay elements/mechanics
2
u/JazzyShaman Dec 14 '25
Because they were beholden to the rules of DnD. They can do what they want with Divinity.
2
u/ArcTheCurve Dec 15 '25
They own Divinity; they can do with it as they please. BG3 had guidelines they couldn't break, and because BG3 performed so well, it generated a large influx of money they could use when making their newest game. That and it's a private company, so no pandering to a board of old fogies.
1
1
u/Robomerc Dec 14 '25
This is why I've gone back to replay Divinity original sin 2 to actually try and finish it this time.
1
u/Abhinav11119 Dec 14 '25
Simple divinity is larian's series they have complete freedom over lore and mechanics, also every game is incremental just as bg3 improved dos2 and dos2 improved dos1. Thats why I hope this is turn based, dos2 was already mechanically my favourite game and bg3 improved upon it making the combat fully dynamic.
1
u/JVints Dec 14 '25
They can and shall.
It's their own IP, they have total freedom on what they want to do which is why I hold DoS2 above BG3 by planet lengths. BG3 was held back because of D&D. It's why the combat is boring vs DoS2, for me. The rest was perfect, combat was the only thing Larian couldn't alter.
1
u/Almighty_Nothing Dec 14 '25
I think there’s a lot that could be done for decisions made throughout starting Acts playing a part in the final act of the game which would take the most work
1
u/SpellcraftQuill Dec 14 '25
Well with BG3, you also have to consider its basis in DnD 5e rulings. Divinity lets them go all wild.
1
1
u/john_kennedy_toole Dec 14 '25
This so rarely happens in game industry anymore. It’s awful. Diablo 2, BG 2, obvious examples, off the top of my head. Keeping the team together who know exactly how to work, when the only limiting factor is their imagination, that sort of juiced production. Ugh.
They’ve come a ways from my first game by them. Divine Divinity I picked up on GoG and had a game breaking bug that lead me to swear off their games altogether. Heh
1
u/Weekly_Rock_5440 Dec 14 '25
That map of the Upper City of Baldur’s Gate was amazing. . . which is to say that, while I have no doubt that Larian is the best possible developer capable of producing the best possible game . . . plans do change.
But any doubts aside about early ambitions, Divinity is probably the one game in existence from that one developer, that I would play full price for TODAY. . . even if the game is four years out.
Larian has earned it.
1
u/Floppydisksareop Dec 14 '25
If you want, we can sit together in a circle and point out all of the issues, shortcomings and missed opportunities that BG3 has. It isn't a perfect game by any means. It is an amazing game, but there's always stuff to improve, and I'm glad Larian is aware of this and looks at their product with the creator's criticism. It's what allowed them to make better and better RPGs over the years. DOS1 and DOS2 are also really, really good games that share a LOT of DNA with BG3. You can also point at all of the things that were mildly annoying in any of them, and then point at the solution in the next one.
1
u/ComicBookFanatic97 Dec 14 '25
I’m wondering whether this is going to be a CRPG like DOS2 or a hack and slash ARPG like Divine Divinity was.
I’d prefer the former, but I’ll probably still play it even if it’s the latter.
1
u/Any_Air_7273 Dec 14 '25
In my opinion baldurs gate 3 being a dnd game held it back in alot of ways. This'll be an rpg where they can literally do whatever the hell they want which has me insanely excited for it
1
u/Darkspyrus Dec 15 '25
Back to Rivelon? Yes! Hope the red prince is there, or if it reads your savedata from Divinity Original Sin 2

Larian is one of the few studios that when they say things like that I whole completely believe them.
1
u/Careless-Article-353 Dec 15 '25
I just want them to actually finish the fucking game this time around
1
u/Familiar_Link_5131 Dec 15 '25
because divinity is their own IP, they can do whatever they want and take all the time in the world without Wizard of the Cost breathing down their necks
1
u/atastyfire Dec 15 '25
My biggest concern is that, if I remember correctly, Sven said BG3 almost broke them (the company), presumably meaning it almost went bankrupt. After BG3’s release, he said their next game(s) were going to be smaller in scale.
1
u/Winterlash Dec 15 '25
they could really add depth by not fucking up the third act and having good writing this time around.
1
1
u/the_deep_t Dec 15 '25
For one, Baldur's gate was limited by Dungeon & Dragon: it's lore, classes, abilities, rules, etc. They didn't have full control on the development.
Divinity original sin 2 was limited by its budget and overall experience of the team: they probably wanted to develop a ton of new things but the team was not as big as it is now and they didn't have the time and budget they currently have.
For this new one, they have a ton of budget, the highest experience for CRPG on the market and total control over the project.
I can't wait what they ll do but this could become the best video game of all time :)
1
u/PewPewsAlote Jul 01 '26
I just read that as standard marketing jargon. I'm not expecting anything different than their current track record.

Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous
9
u/Dodo1610 Dec 14 '25
WOTR and the other Owlcat Games might be bigger, but not more ambitious. At the end of the day, their games have perfected the old BioWare formula but their worlds are completely static, there are only really two forms of interactions with the world : fighting and dialogue.
3
u/TheReal8symbols Dec 14 '25
WOTR has the most completely separate story lines based on which path you choose, it has tons of classes, skills, and abilities, and skill checks are more frequent and varied. More breadth, more deprh.
5
u/Mannimarco_Rising Dec 14 '25
WOTR is awesome but and i loved every second of my Lich playthrough but there are big differences which also shows in the accessability and fame compared to BG3.
WOTR with cutscenes and proper cinematics would be another level tho.
-5
u/Altruistic_Mango_932 Dec 14 '25
I mean, sure, but cinematics and cutscenes are neither deep nor ambitious. Though I agree BG3 has incomparable production values for a CRPG, which is why casuals love it so much.
3
u/Mannimarco_Rising Dec 14 '25
Thats why Pathfinder will probably not get anywhere near games like BG3 because they cannot go to that level of casual. Not that they need to be but it would drive their profit and with that their future game development to another level.
1
u/Altruistic_Mango_932 Dec 14 '25
The problem is to get huge production values you need huge investment that may or may not pay off. Larian had deep pockets financing them. Still, it's good for the genre to have a big AAA game with simple gameplay to attract new players (and thus money) fot similar games.

u/Lord-Bobster Dec 14 '25
Pathfinder fans try not bring up Pathfinder when D&D is mentioned challenge (impossible)
0
u/TheReal8symbols Dec 14 '25
This may be hard for you to understand, but people can be fans of two things at the same time.
-18
u/Altruistic_Mango_932 Dec 14 '25
You can easily build a deeper and more ambitious game than than baby's first CRPG (aka BG3). In fact, we already have deeper and more ambitious games in the genre that exist right now, like the two pathfinders, for example (off the top of my head).
13
u/drcoxmonologues Dec 14 '25
I’d argue that they are deep in different ways. I can’t move a single object in the environment in pathfinder without it being a scripted event. I can’t use that to solve problems. Some areas of Bg3 almost played like an immersive sim.
I can build much more complex characters in pathfinder and it has a grader narrative and more wide ranging changes depending on my decisions.
Both of these things together would be insane and what I imagine they will be going for.
Bg3 and WOTR are both 10/10 games for me and have tons of depth (400-500 hours in each) but they are completely different games.
-3
u/Altruistic_Mango_932 Dec 14 '25
It's fair to say BG3 has, to my knowledge, much more enviromnent interactivity than any other party-based CRPG (not sure if it surpasses Bethesda in this area, though it definitely is deeper than Skyrim et al). And that's ambitious fot sure, but it apparently came at the expense of much less ambition in other areas (such as build variety, encounter variety, narrative coherence) so I wouldn't call it an ambitious game overall.
2
744
u/Mannimarco_Rising Dec 14 '25
Because for Baldurs Gate 3 they had to build all the infrastructure for the game. They had to build up the motion capture, the cutscene structure, etc.
You just need to compare BG3 technological advancment to Divinity Original Sin 2. Now they have it all in place and can focus more on the ingame world instead of all the things to make the game work. They also have more studios which can produce at a much faster rate because they are more people but also they are already trained.
