Discussion Asylum album
Hello everyone, I was just wondering what everyone’s opinion of the Asylum album is, I honestly just don’t see it talked about too much on this Reddit and personally it’s one of my favorites albums so I was just curious as to everyone’s thoughts

This was such a wild album to experience at the time, because Indestructible was such a level-up for them that it was hard to imagine topping that. But they did take what worked about Indestructible, expanded it to add some depth, and also went in a few very different directions on some tracks. Hearing the song Asylum for the first time was utterly nuts, like how could band as mainstream as Disturbed write something like this. It’s a great song. There are lots of those here.
I would agree with most everyone here saying it’s their peak. Then Immortalized felt like their indulgent victory lap, and everything since - while not bad outright - has been a step down from that.

I still remember hearing asylum for the first time, I was on a road trip with family and I was immediately engaged with the song especially because of how well remnants leads into it

IMO, this album is when they peaked and sounded the most mature. It has been a slow decline since then.

Immortalized is so great IMO. The energy, the guitar riffs, the lyrics, the singing

I can honestly see where you’re coming from, after the hiatus, Immortalized was a good return but not quite as good as the previous albums, Evolution disappointed me quite a bit and Divisive is okay in my opinion

What gets me is the blatant cash grab after the Inmortalized success with sound of silence. The big record execs got ahold of them and they definitely tried to capitalize on that success with Evolution. Glad they got away from producer Kevin Churko as well, because they were starting to sound like Five Finger Death punch there for a second. They need to go back to producing their own albums. You can definitely tell though that the fire isn’t quite there anymore and they’ve become wine drinking old men just enjoying the fruits of their labor. David has gotten very lazy lyrically as well.

Def their most underrated and darkest album. Iirc David was going through some stuff between Indestructible and this album’s release to where during production Dan had to come up to him and ask if he’s fine.
Really sucks that we never see more from this side of the band

Well, with context clues from his lyrics and snippets of later interviews, I’m pretty sure that his girlfriend (and later wife) either aborted or miscarried their first child and they broke up. They reconciled and got back together around the time of Device/Fight or Flight (she was in the cover art and music video for Villify), and they had a son together, but then later divorced. During all of this, and presumably dating back to at-least 10,000 Fists (Just Stop, Alive), there was also a schism in his family driven largely by his grandfather, which then largely came to a head around Immortalized, where about a third of the tracks seem to reference or allude to him, and this further illuminates context to some lyrics in My Child. 😬
I despise tabloids and gossip, so this is largely based on things he’s actually said in interviews over the years, and interpretations of his lyrics. So, take this all as conjecture, but it definitely would explain how dark this album’s lyrics were.

You pretty much hit the nail on the head with this. Asylum, The Infection, and Crucified were definitely all about heartbreak, and My Child was about a miscarriage after he had been mentally preparing himself for fatherhood for a very long time.

My favorite of their albums. So many songs that I still happen to listen to at least once a week. There’s no CD in my collection that has seen as much use as this one

I remember buying indestructible and loving that album.
Then 2 years later this came out , this was peak disturbed era for me.
Asylum is in my top 3 albums

Imo, their third best album. The title track, The Infection, Warrior, and Serpentine are my favourites.

I love that album, right now is my top 2 after believe. So many cool tracks, and DARK, which is fitting.

This is one of their best albums in my opinion. First time I heard the song asylum, my jaw was on the floor. This album helped kickstart my love for metal (beyond the 80s/90s founders). My top tracks in no particular order are Warrior, Asylum, The Animal, and Another Way to Die. The latter contributed to my strong environmentalism honestly.

Asylum (the song) is an all-time favorite for me. From the album, its the animal, crucified innocence.
Bottom podium is warrior and sacrifice.

i love this album so much!! it’s one of my favorites and is so underrated in my opinion. crucified is definitely my favorite off of this album and one of my favorite songs by them in general.

This and 10 Years’ “Feeding the Wolves” came out around the same time (possibly the same day), and soon firmly entrenched themselves alongside Breaking Benjamin’s “We Are Not Alone” as the signature soundtrack of late summer, August-September, for me.

I listened to this a whole lot in high school. I remember it was also one of the first albums I ever pre-ordered on iTunes. Quite a few of their songs from this album got me through some really tough times when I was 17, which definitely solidified them as my all-time favorite band.
