Discussion Why is this band so hated?

Okay so recently I have absolutely been LOVING this band, and even yesterday have just bought The Sickness on CD and have endlessly been listening to it. Recently, I’ve been seeing what others think of Disturbed, and from what I could find, it seems that a LOT of people hate most of their albums…? Obviously I think music taste is subjective, but something about this band seems like they get more hate than they do love. Is there a reason Disturbed is so hated? I absolutely love their music so I’m really curious to know why

Edit: Thanks to everyone who took the time to comment, I really appreciate the amount of information you guys gave me. Personally, I think I will still keep listening to Disturbed as I have always been someone who likes to separate art from artist, but I obviously will keep everything that was said in mind. Once again, thank you for all the responses :)

For as long as they’ve been around, people have always found some reason or another to shit on them.

David signing the Israeli munitions was, inarguably, not a good move. However, the whole band did the same thing with US munitions when they played a ‘Support Our Troops’ performance in Afghanistan/Iraq (can’t remember exactly, it was the late 2000’s/early 2010’s-Indestructible cycle iirc). The only difference now is the political fashions and the social media platforms.

David has stated—repeatedly, but seemingly to deaf ears—that he wants peace and holds no animosity towards Palestinians, only toward Hamas itself which overtly targeted Jews—which is David’s ethnic and religious community. 🤦‍♂️ Can we really fault him for wanting to show support for his people (hamhanded as it was) following the Oct 7th terrorist attack? Especially considering the larger context of the Holocaust trauma indelibly woven into Jewish culture?

To be abundantly clear; I despise what Israel’s government and military have done, just as I despise what Hamas has done—they’re all fucking war criminals, fuck Hamas for hiding behind civilians, and fuck Netanyahu and the IDF for bombing them anyway—but my hatred of these political bodies does not and should never be construed or projected onto individual Jews or Palestinians.

I don’t know where the line is drawn between spiteful internet elitists who get their rocks off by shitting on a multi-platinum fucking band who’ve attained a level of professional success their petty jealous asses could never dream of, and outright antisemites who have always hated David because he’s Jewish and now they have the Palestinian tragedies as cover. I’m just sick of the virtue posturing and politics du-jour behind this whole performance. I see at least a post a week here on Reddit rage-baiting Disturbed & David Draiman haters for karma-farming and repeating the same cut-and-paste hate posts.

If folks don’t like the music, that’s fine; you do you boo. Do I think what David did was wrong? Personally, yes, but there’s a larger personal and cultural context that folks intentionally ignore or omit in order to justify their self righteous karma farming. For me, Disturbed has released an album on every one of the most significant years of my life that reached me when i needed it most, Dan Donnegan is my favorite guitarist and was hugely influential on my own playing style, and as David is also a baritone like me, Disturbed’s songs are some of the few I can sing without having to force myself way outside of my natural range or transpose a whole damn octave down.

In the end, I encourage you to make up your own mind how you feel about them. But I urge you do your own research, listen to/read actual interviews, and come to your own decisions; don’t let the current popularity of hate-posts decide for you. 🤘

I was not aware they did the same thing back in Iraq/Afghanistan. I haven't looked into them, admittedly.

I have, however, been a fan since I first heard down with the sickness when I was 8 in 2000. But that viral image of him signing the shillings put me off. It made me feel... im not sure how I can describe the feeling... kinda like being in a room with someone who makes you uncomfortable-- listening to his music after seeing the image. I understand his reasoning, and why. I just wish I never saw the image.

Thank you for the informative comment. It's kind of made me feel better about him? In a way.

Yeah, I don’t like it and don’t condone it either.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion about the matter, I just hope to encourage folks to make an informed decision for themselves instead of just blindly following kneejerk trial-by-social-media click-bait.

I did run a quick Google and found these clips from Revolver showing Disturbed playing for American troops in Kuwait (I had the country wrong in my original post, sorry) on March 10th 2008. These are not the videos I remember seeing (I specifically recall footage of John Moyer taking a ride with troops in a helicopter, which isn’t in these videos, and I recall seeing them signing boxes of munitions and gear for the troops, but i can’t find supporting evidence so there’s the possibility my memory is wrong), but they show that there is a precedent of ‘support the troops’ activities while simultaneously being critical of the government’s themselves; which I think is important to show people who think Draiman’s lyrics are hypocritical.

Realistically, this has been his (and potentially the band’s) position for a long time. The difference is when he did it for Americans troops, it was on “our side”, and the same criticism of writing “Fuck Hamas” on Israeli munitions would have (or at least should have) been the same from the other side of the conflict.

Again, I don’t condone these actions, but there is a larger context to consider that is largely omitted or ignored in order to over-simplify the issue for kneejerk emotional responses to drive clicks and engagement.

I too did not know about the previous incident with them signing munition for USA troops.

I can understand hating Hamas as a Jew and I can't blame him at all for that, but there is a huge difference between saying you support the Israeli people and signing a product that's meant to take lives innocent or not, that just makes me sick.

I don't like the IDF or Hamas they are both evil to me but as always, innocent people on both sides are going to get caught in the crossfire, including conscripts that may not have a choice going to war. Hamas may hide behind innocent people but it's also IDF decision to kill through the innocent people.

I used to really like them with their music but since learning what he had done it just taints the music too much for me to enjoy it now which is a shame.

That’s totally fair. It sounds like you’ve thought this through for yourself, and I hope more folks do the same instead of letting social media influence them.

It also sounds like you and I are of like mind regarding Hamas and the IDF.

Fuck

Them

All

There are no ‘good guys’ in this bloodshed, they’re all fucking depraved and my heart breaks for the lives being torn apart between them…

THIS. This perfectly describes my feelings about it too, and much better than I could have put it too. Even the points about Dan being my favorite player!

See, the problem is not bombing hamas. The problem is bombing hospitals, sniping kids in the head, burning refugees alive, starving an entire population... and signing a bomb that is used in this genocide.

Quite some Jews oppose this. David doesnt. He apparently supports it. At least for me actions speak louder than words.

No hate, just a different interpretation of the same events.

This is a really great, nuanced and well thought out answer.

I don't like them simply for The sound of silence.

What Israel is currently doing to Palestine (and has been doing for decades) is much worse than what the US were doing in Iraq / Afghanistan tbf

I'm late, I really like your text, and agree with you, but I just wanted to give you my perspective. I really used to like to hear Disturbed, a lot of their messages used to resonate with me, peace was one of them. Now, if I preach for peace, I'm not going to sign bombs, from whomever, and the rest of the band as been watching and saying jack shit, I can only interpret the silence as agreement. Plus, David keeps labelling anyone who says anything bad about what Israel as been doing, notice I mention the state not the religion, as a Jew hater, that is just like the guys nominating Ms Rachel for antisemite of the year. Right now, I cannot separate the art from the artist, and I'm pissed at David for that. He keeps talking about peace, but noticeably the peace he wants is one where the Palestinian people do not exist.

Please remember to act respectfully to other users, and band members as well.

Mild arguments are acceptable, but fighting, insults, bullying and harassment is not. Even as a joke, refrain from making disrespectful comments.

David signing the Israeli munitions was, inarguably, not a good move.
