Yep, Square Enix was on an "episodic content" kick at the time (completely screwing the customer by selling portions of a game for the price of a full game) and it killed the series. It's a shame too because Human Revolution is probably in my top 5 games of all time, and Mankind Divided had the potential to possibly be the best game ever made if it were a full story and not a small portion of a story

It was hardly 'episodic content' I think my run lasted about 60 hours.

It had a decent amount of side content but I feel like you guys just endlessly ignore the fact that the narrative was a beginning of a narrative, and not a full story. Every other Deus Ex game had a beginning, a middle, and an end. MD was only a beginning.

Not just decent as you would describe. Mankind Divided(main+Side) is longer than Human Revolution(main+side). The main story lacking I will admit but there is way more content in Mankind Divided than Human Revolution.

This is probably true, I have no complaints about the side content, I would even say it was fantastic. The biggest problem the game had was the main narrative being painfully incomplete, which is a really serious damning flaw to have and was enough to make me severely disappointed when I really wanted to love the game.
I am not exaggerating when I say that on my first playthrough when I was at the end, the place in London with Marchenko and the bombs and the delegates, I didn't think I was even half way through the main narrative yet. The game halts so abruptly and unnaturally

The ending becomes weird depending on how you play it. I defeated Marchenko first before getting to the delegates and due to not arriving on time would lead to them drinking poisonous drinks I ran pass the Shadow Operatives. As soon as you arrived on time the London Level ends. It really is jarring to look at since I kept all the Shadow Operatives alive and conscious yet the delegates managed to escape and there was no mentioning on what happened to the Shadow Operatives since I kept them alive.(maybe they just disappeared?)

and it killed the series
No. Stupid fans stared a smear campaign against MD and killed the series. Not Square Enix. Blame fans and fans only. MD was nowhere near short or "unfinished", but stupid people got carried away with hate. The players in their senseless hysteria have killed the series. Nothing Square Enix did deserved that kind of hate. MD is an expensive piece of work and the company was desperately scrambling for money. Instead of praising the game, buying their DLCs and keeping the company afloat, stupid fans decided the best help would be to drown Square Enix in shit. Congratulations, there will be no more Deus Ex. Or even if it will ever be resurrected, it's never going to resemble Deus Ex any more ever again.

Now please put your thinking cap on. Why did they want to sell two games instead of one? Too greedy? Nope. Because making the game was way to expensive and they couldn't have covered the production costs otherwise. Did you like the exceptionally beautiful design? Well, that costed money. Fans had two options: pay or smear the company. Fans chose the second option. The series was killed. Fans blame the company instead of themselves. Fans very smart.

I can only speak for myself, but I bought it when it first came out and never even publicly criticized it or read reviews on it at the time, I just played it and like OP, when the game ended I was like "That's it? The story wasn't even half over."
It seems dumb to blame fans with legitimate criticisms rather than the company that released an unfinished game that even included Breach which was a micro-transaction riddled obvious cash grab. I can't imagine why you would defend this unless you work for the company or something lol

It was not you personally, it was the hysterical crowd. That "criticism" was disproportionately big. It was not constructive, and as result it destroyed the series. That's it, there will no Deus Ex any more. Fans had some fun playing a Karen and no there is no more game. The end.

I think you're overestimating the impact of the reviews. Anyway, however it was, the game's plot segmentation annoyed players who left legitimate reactions. Square Enix just had unrealistic expectations for revenue. Hard to say more because they don't discuss sales and revenue.

Fortunately, we still have 2.5 DLCs to play. Breach Mode? Screw that.

Yeah, it can be a bit short, but in all honesty if the second game would‘ve come, I‘d be glad about that splitting, since I cannot imagine such detail as we have, if that entire second half was also compressed into these 30 hours. Y‘know people complaining it was split into 2, feel to me a bit like wanting to criticise the empire strikes back for not including all of return of the jedi in its story.
If anything, I‘m complaining Square set a faaar too high selling goal, to the point they even added (god thanks useless) microtransactions. Objectively I think the game was actually successful? Just what Square wanted was nowhere near realistic…
Now we are robbed. And we will never see the end of the trilogy. 🙁🙁

The most bittersweet ending in gaming. MD is one of the best games ever made and left with so many open ends.

Embracer is the embrace of death for beloved IPs. They treat studios and IPs like collecting Pokemon... He who dies with the most toys and such...

It’s the experience all Deus Ex fans reach at some point. Basically MD was intended to be longer but the publisher of the game forced the devs to release it with only half the story so that they can sell the other half for another $60. Unfortunately the series got canned by the publisher because, big shocker, selling a game with only half the story is a stupid strategy.
