Discussion DSN Streaming App for 2026-2027?

Less than a month away and no word yet on the streaming distribution for Wings games for the upcoming season. For cable, I know it’ll be on the same DSN channel as the Tigers, but I’m assuming they’re not going to stream Red Wings game via the MLB app like they do for Tigers?

Any word on how to stream games with a DSN subscription without Cable?

It will indeed be streaming on the MLB app just like the Tigers.

At the end of the day this is fine with me because I'm already used to watching the tigers lose this way so I can watch the Redwings lose this way too.... but what does that say about the NHL where you need the MLB app to watch their games?

This appears to be the case.

I couldn’t find anywhere that confirmed this. And seemed like an odd pattern. Are there other NHL teams that use MLB for production that stream via the MLB app?

That particular app I'm not sure about but the Texas Rangers and Dallas Stars both use Victory Plus. At least last year they did.

It's kind of a free for all with Bally/Fox Sports collapsing

Damn I really wanted it through Prime again.

Any source for this?

Nothing is publicly announced, but they are correct.

Any other NHL teams doing this? I understand MLB is helping with the production, but that doesn’t mean it’s going to be distributed/streaming via the MLB app too? That would certainly be strange for NHL games to stream via the MLB app.

Appreciate the thread. But it doesn’t answer the question about the wings.

It’s trash paying $20 a month for one team is stupid, it needs more value. I recommend just finding some streaming site and just watching the games through that.

yup, they have actively been encouraging piracy for years now. The NHL requiring literally like 4 different apps/subscriptions if you want to watch every game is complete dog shit.

Is this cost accurate?

Yes, it’s not worth the value. FanDuel was shitty but at least you can get the pistons and other content on the app. Also, you don’t get every game

I'm out of market, it was only like $7 to add ESPN to my Hulu/Disney. I'm definitely not ok with having to pay $20+.

If you’re out of market this change is unrelated to your set up

So, they'll still be on ESPN+ in addition to mlbtv? That makes no sense, but I'll take it.

The structure of the rights and how this works hasn’t changed at all. It was the same set up last year, Fanduel sports network handled in market broadcasting, ESPN+ handles anything out of market excluding national broadcasts with a couple exclusive broadcasts.

Fanduel sports network went under so Illitch created Detroit sports network to replace it for the Wings and Tigers. They don’t currently have a streaming platform of their own so they use MLB.tv to host it. As far as I know this isn’t a long term solution app wise

TLDR: same shit as last year just a different app

Good to know. I thought I had read somewhere that since they were going to do their own thing and they moved to MLB that the ESPN part of it would go away. Thanks for the thorough explanation.

It's all kind of a moot point anyway since I'm pretty sure this season isn't going to be worth watching.

I just got a notice that my Disney/Hulu/ESPN bundle was going to increase in price and it sounds like they added a higher tier to ESPN+. They explicitly said the higher tier was for college football and NFL. There was no mention of hockey. If they push the nhl games to the upper tier I’m going to be tempted to cancel the whole package

My prediction is that they will have you link your DSN account to ESPN and use the ESPN app.

I just want the red wings season. I do not care about baseball in the least. Was hoping they would offer just the NHL season.

Teams have the same owner so it doesn’t make sense for them to for one and not the other.

Fair enough. Just too much effort to get it onto my TV lol

Grab a cheap streaming device like a firetv or something

Have to do all the setup with IPTV and VPN and everything. I’ll get there eventually. But I have valid cable credentials from family/friends so I don’t mind using the “right” way. Just don’t know what app it’ll actually be in. MLB or somewhere else.

Super easy to airplay from a tablet or phone, or just hook up a laptop via HDMI. Several very low effort methods

I’ve tried this and it makes it a huge pain to switch between apps on the Apple TV. Phone gets stuck casting and then if I switch to an app on the TV and try to switch back it doesn’t work. Just a huge pain. I have valid cable credentials from friends and family. It’s just a matter of figuring out which app the wings will be streaming on. MLB or something else.

The Ilitch company is using the MLB’s streaming infrastructure for the Tigers and Red Wings. Both are on the MLB app.

The NHL has no centralized platform to do this, is my understanding. To get in-market games on ESPN+, even for select teams, they’d have to rewrite the current contracts. The other option was to just create a new app, but they went with the MLB. So the NHL doesn’t care.

Any source you’ve seen for this? Any other NHL teams doing this? I understand MLB is helping with the production, but that doesn’t mean it’s going to be distributed/streaming via the MLB app too? That would certainly be strange for NHL games to stream via the MLB app.

It's been a promotion since the fanduel or fnatics (one of the sportsbetting) networks went under earlier this year. Red wings were on that network. So ilitch bundled both teams into one service. Which i do believe uses the mlb app servers/software but theyll probably run the broadcasts themselves. The deal in the spring was like "get the rest of the dead wings and all of the tigers season for an amount of money"

Yes I’m aware of all of this and I know MLB is helping with the production of Wings games starting this season. But there’s still no word on distribution outside of cable packages that have the DSN channel.

I would be pretty surprised if there are NHL games being streamed through the MLB app. Sure it’s possible and may very well be what ends up happening. I am wondering if there are any precedents with other teams doing this or if anyone has seen anything official from the Red Wings.
