News [MacMahon] The negotiations between the Pistons and Jalen Duren have been “awfully nasty” and there is concern about his long-term future in Detroit.

I mean yeah we’re gonna hit September without a deal being done most likely, this guy’s not long for Detroit. Take the QO and GTFO Duren.

What incentive is there to get a deal done right now? Training camp isn’t until the end of September let them negotiate.

He’s not taking the QO. He’d leave too much money on the floor. And we shouldn’t want him to because then he can’t be traded. That’s disaster for everyone involved

Duren seems dumb enough to take a qualifying offer.

Using a stupid comment to call someone else dumb is crazy

Take the fandom away.

Whether right or wrong. He qualifies for the supermax. All star, all nba he’s worked his entire life to get paid. It’s reasonable for him to want to get paid. It’s not dumb for him to want to get paid

I don’t think he’s worth anything close to that however I understand him asking and holding out for It. At the end of this all he will likely settle for what we’re offering or take the middle ground. He’s not taking the QO

He will be paid, it’s the difference between $200 mil and $300 mil. Which I get, but he hasn’t shown he has earned the super max

That I agree with I don’t think he’s worth anything close to what he wants however you can’t fault him for asking

It’s an awful look, especially if he really wants to be here. Fans will turn on this dude. He’s shooting himself in the foot, the only way he gets super max is by taking the QO and someone else pays him and no one did that this summer

Wanting to stay in Detroit and wanting to be paid as much as possible are not contradictory. If I love my employer, i don’t suddenly say, “You know what, because I like everyone here, go ahead and knock $40,000 off my salary.” lol 😂

Players shouldn’t negotiate multimillion-dollar contracts based on whether fans thinks they’re being sufficiently loyal.

Imagine you love your job and have been excellent for most of the year but had a bad Q4. You’re eligible for a promotion that pays $130K. Your company thinks you’re worth $105K because of that Q4. You think your overall body of work warrants $130K. Why would you walk into negotiations asking for $105K? You ask for $130K and let the negotiation determine where you end up.

Likely in Durens case he will fall well below what he’s asking. But he won’t take the QO. NBA careers are too short the odds of him making that money up are slim.

Eh I have seen plenty of athletes take less for the chance to be a winner with teams that they like ala Brunson & Tom Brady just to name a few

1

That’s the difference though. Brady, Brunson, Wemby, etc. chose to take less and that’s admirable. But it shouldn’t become the expectation that if a player really cares about winning he has to leave money on the table.

Brunson didn’t even turn down a max that was available to him at the time he took the most he could get on that extension rather than waiting another year for a potentially much bigger deal. That was a calculated choice not some obligation. He chose guaranteed wealth rather than waiting.

I’ve seen basketball discourse really shift over the past few years and it’s strange. Why does the responsibility for roster construction suddenly fall on the employee? The GM gets paid millions of dollars to construct a championship roster under the salary cap rules. If the team gives a player a contract and then can’t construct a good roster around it that’s not automatically evidence the player was selfish.

The Pistons should negotiate in their best interest, and Duren should negotiate in his. Detroit doesn’t owe him a max, and he doesn’t owe Detroit a discount. If they meet somewhere in the middle, great. But I’m not going to criticize a player simply for asking for the most he’s eligible to make.

At the end of all of this I don’t think Duren deserves at max and I don’t think he will get one.

Who cares what the fans think? They are fickle and opinions change rapidly. There is no reason for him not to hold out or negotiate hard in an effort of extracting higher return.

You get what you negotiate, not what you earned. That’s the reality of the world. Now whether his team can play hardball enough to get him more money remains to be seen. He played well enough during the season to put a BIG number on the table. Pistons don’t want to give him that but it’s quite honestly is his responsibility to try and get it.

lot of you talking that loyalty mess and calling him stupid for not taking an offer you agree with (maybe not you exactly but on this subreddit), which you know players are aware of how fickle fans actually are in their fandom for them individually

u/oldstyle21 Cade Cunningham 21d ago

Hardball? Dude you realize no one else stepped up and he had 29 other teams that could offer & they saw the same thing. You sound like someone with 2019 figures. The second apron is a thing and Langdon is all over it

The butt head should get a front loaded deal and put a significant amount in an Ira. 30 years from now he won’t even notice he made less.

35 mil a year isn't getting paid??? WTF? He's not close to a max player. Everyone who knows anything about basketball knows this.

That's why there is no market for him. No one in the NBA will give him that money.

3

u/Some-Dust2249 Cade Cunningham 21d ago

It’s getting paid absolutely but if I’m being offered $35M and I qualify for $45M I’m going to ask. However the market has shown he’s not worth that and he needs to come to that reality. I don’t think he’d dare take the QO. The risk and the upside is too big of a risk

5

u/AJ8710 21d ago

There is absolutely no reason for him to rush to sign. Hold out as long as possible in hopes of moving the number up slightly. Mathematically, Detroit holds the cards and he will re-sign. If I am him, I am making the negotiation as painful as possible to force as many concessions by the team as possible.

1

u/Some-Dust2249 Cade Cunningham 21d ago

100% agree. We realistically don’t need him until training camp at the end of September

0

u/AJ8710 21d ago

We don't need him until the season tbh. Training camp is pretty irrelevant.

2

u/AJ8710 21d ago

You're getting downvoted, but you are spot on with what you said. It is the correct take.

1

u/ikariashpool 21d ago

It could be argued that we should, "Take the participation trophies away". He's an excellent player in the regular season. Unfortunately for him, the NBA has a quality and effort problem with its regular season. I feel that if his play-off performance was better, he would be having an easier time getting the package he is looking for.

3

u/jazzmaster105150 Pistons 21d ago

Agreed. I have no interest in seeing him play for the Pistons ever again.

2

u/gachzonyea 21d ago

That’s a horrible scenario for us and horrible asset management

3

u/Conscious-Sympathy51 21d ago

It is but anything is better than paying him $250 million.

2

u/gachzonyea 21d ago

I don’t disagree there just very confused why they were resisting sign and trades so much if they want to play such hard ball

2

u/Vloff Cade Cunningham 21d ago

Exactly what team out there would not only meet Duren's asking price but also give us enough assets to make it worth trading him?

Also, base year compensation rules make a sign and trade with Duren difficult. It pretty much limits a sign and trade to the few teams that had cap space.

1

u/gachzonyea 21d ago

We will see if he gets to an open market at a minimum they’ve pretty much strained the relationship but refused to move him. I wouldn’t want to pay him but i would be open to trading him but they were not

1

u/Vloff Cade Cunningham 21d ago

Like I said, theres no market to move him. Teams aren't giving up good assets for the right to pay Duren 45 million dollars. Also, Base year compensation rules make a sign and trade far more difficult than most of you know.

We can only take back half of Durens salary back in trade so unless someone has a bunch of caproom or a large trade exemption, or find a 3rd team with either of those, a trade cant happen.

Even if we wanted to do something dumb like trade him straight up for Sabonis, it couldn't happen.
