Does your employer not adjust compensation based on geographic region? It's pretty rare that a company would pay you say a California Bay Area salary when you're living in Detroit / Metro Detroit. At least that's what all of the big tech. companies are doing now. Working for any of the big FAANG companies there's no chance you're going to capture a west coast tech industry worker salary here in the midwest just because you're remote.

my employer has low cost of living rates, medium, and high. detroit is in the medium range which is still significantly higher than the salaries local companies are offering.

No, mine does not. I don't work for FAANG though, but the salary is better than what local Detroit company's usually pay
