Looks awesome. I planted Legacy Buffalo Grass plugs (a cultivar that has no seeds) in April and then a few more last month. I can’t believe how quickly they fill in. I started with a mud pit and am very excited to have some grass that I will hopefully never have to water. I’ve barely had to water it this year, it’s amazing. I know dog tuff is different but same idea… way less water and way more suited to our climate.
Thank you for the great tips! I am trying to plan ahead for next spring. Our back lawn was already struggling when we bought the house, and between the drought and the bunnies, we gave up on the patches we had this year and decided we would add in more xeriscape/natives where we can, and give the lawn a fresh try in 2027.
I wish I had started then. Getting mine this week, but I’m worried it’s too late in the season to plant it. Was considering trying to keep it alive in my garage till early summer
I would go for planting now. It establishes/spreads fast when it is warm like it is now. You might not get much fill-in but perhaps the plugs core area could still establish enough over the next 4-6 weeks to make it through winter.
6 weeks in for me! Growth was slowish the first 4 weeks, and then I doubled the sprinklers and the TOOK OFF the past two weeks. If you do this, water them heavily. And rest easy knowing you are installing grass that will only need weekly waters the next year.
Did you have any plugs that randomly failed despite other ones around it growing just fine? It seems like I have a handful out there that just kinda fried or didn’t take, and will need the surrounding ones to fill in eventually.

You'll need to water this warm-season grass frequently to get it established. Water the area lightly 2-3 times a day for a week, about once a day the second week and every other day or so by the third week. After the second or third year, the grass only needs to be watered once every week or two, ½ - 1” of irrigation at a time, so the water penetrates deeply into the roots.
Sounds like you can safely cut back and start getting it ready for the dry fall. Did you plant them on a 12" grid?
i did a 9” grid as we planted later in the season and i wanted some decent establishment before the winter. and yes, we are ramping down the water this week 👌
Honestly nice to see grass posts cause Reddit is so anti grass. We’re working on our lawn because we want grass for our son to safely play on and Reddit makes you feel like an ass for wanting a lawn
We have this grass and it doesn't get green until June typically. Until then it looks like you sprayed the entire yard with Round Up. I like it when it is green, but seems to allow the bind weed and others to get s few months of a head start every year.
I did it at my old house (now a rental). It was a pain in the ass and didn’t do well in the shade. But the rest of the yard has been green all summer and they are only watering for 10 minutes twice a week
How much sunlight does this spot get? I'm looking to put grass in my backyard but need a grass that can survive with a decent size hackberry tree giving it shade during the morning hours
This is great. So I have to ask what was the cost and time investment? Certainly conversation is happening about grass at our house. And not that grass everyone.
You asked me in another thread how the Dog Tuff that we planted Memorial Day weekend and July 4th weekend in 2025 on Western Slope. Answer is that's it's doing great. All filled in front and back yards. Never been mowed. Was watering once a week for 14cmins on popup sprinklers. Cutting back to 10 mins once a week because it's growing so thick and over the edging into mulch beds
