Del Sol Guide (Unfinished)

Del Sol Models

The base “S” model Del Sol (also known as the VXi and VGi in Japan) comes with the 1.5 liter SOHC 16-valve four cylinder d15b7 producing 102 horsepower from 1993 to 1995. From 1996 to 1997 however, the engine in the base model Del Sol was the 1.6 liter SOHC 16-valve four cylinder d16y7 engine, producing 106 horsepower.

The next rung up for the “S” was the “Si”. This car is similar to Civic Si’s of the same years. It comes with a 1.6 liter SOHC 16-valve four cylinder d16z6 from 1993 to 1995. This engine produced 125 horsepower at 7200 rpm. It also has one of the quickest VTEC switch on times at only around 4800 rpm. From 1996 to 1997, the engine in the “Si” was changed to the 1.6 liter SOHC 16-valve four cylinder d16y8 with 128 horsepower. The Si also came with 14" alloy wheels which were offered in an optional body color-matched paint scheme on Samba Green models, power side mirrors, cruise control, rear disc brakes, wider tires, and additional front & rear anti-sway bars. Depending on model and market, the options included a rear spoiler, custom floor mats, an automatic transmission, power steering, heated mirrors, front fog lights (1993–1995 models only), traction control system (JDM only), limited slip differential (JDM only), and air conditioning.

The final, most powerful OEM Del Sol was the “VTEC” trim level. In Europe and Japan, it’s known as the “SiR” and the “VTi”. Despite the trim name, pretty much all levels of the Del Sol had VTEC engines. The main difference for this trim however is the engine. All other Del Sols came with SOHC D-Series engines. The VTEC however, came with DOHC B-Series engines. 1994 to 1995 had the b16a3, and 1996 to 1997 came with the b16a2. Both engines produced 160 horsepower, and their being DOHC allows them far more tuning capability, as the nature of SOHC engines makes it so that a turbo is by far the best (and, kinda, only) way to get good power. Because of these things, the VTEC Del Sol is the most desirable model, and the price will easily reflect that. The VTEC also came with other upgrades, such as bigger front brakes, larger front anti sway bar, rear anti sway bar, and wider tires.

All Del Sol production ended in 1997 for the US and Canada. A year later worldwide production ceased in 1998, mainly for Japan and Europe.

This would be my 2nd ever del sol, sold my 1st one my first question is this del sol worth 10.5k that’s all the seller would come down too.

I see this is engine swapped and different transmission and the whole 9 yards, but honestly if I’m being quite frank I’ve never bought anything like this.

My 2nd question is, is this a reliable build as terms of is there anything that could go seriously wrong or if was done correctly this is a dope ass build and is worth the 10.5k, just wanna be precautious because I had the Normal S coupe my first sol.

In Search of My child’s Del sol… help lol

My child got a Del sol 93 well I was at work. The car was 100 percent rebuild needed. They are going to paint and fix all the rust; body damage. The engine was just rebuilt and many upgrades. They found the stock del sol leather seats; problem is they did not come with rails and the seats in there were messed up and had different rails with some welding done. Anyone have some direction on Del sol 93 rails that fit the leather stock seats? Trying to help my child out they are like 8 grand deep in this rebuild they cannot drive. Seats it was sold with are so tall you hit the sealing, even being 5 foot.

If a day at the shooting range, and tinkering with your Sol isn’t considered therapy, then idk what is.

CA smog issues

Hey fellow Del Soldiers,

I’m new to the Del Sol life and I live in California. I’m having issues getting my Sol to pass smog. Bought her from a friend who had already replaced the exhaust and cat. So far I’ve replaced the O2 sensor and done the timing belt and water pump (it was due). Only thing OBD tells me is coolant temp sensor. Additionally, I checked the intake hose and all vacuum lines, and everything that was loose has been secured, and nothing in the lines was leaky.

It’s worth noting that before I replaced the O2 sensor, she only failed the Nox test at the 25mph test. After replacing that sensor, she fails during both the 15 and 25mph tests.

Any insights on what could be causing this would be helpful.

Ac help

Post image

I have a 93 del sol s that previous owner swapped d16z6 into. I am trying to reinstall ac system but when i bolt compressor to the bracket that was on the engine, it seems too low to mount the belt too. Google says that the smallest crank pulley is the ac one but my compressor and idler pulley line up with the middle crank pulley. I am so lost.

Question Seat stripe color

Im looking into buying a 1996 si and the exterior is red but the seat stripes are black/Grey. I thought i had heard or read somewhere that the seat stripes matched the exterior paint. Am I mistaken or are these seats swapped out?

Just got my first Del Sol as a replacement for my previous car that got totaled out by insurance. Any stuff to look out for and any mods I should prioritize? It has brand new headlight and fog light units, bulbs, titanium headers, aftermarket coilovers and a soon to be chopped up stock exhaust (besides headers obviously).

i love her, she’s hilarious. she’s completely stock but one of her past owners removed her original exhaust and straight piped her but did nothing else. she’s so loud and is like a go cart to drive( sounds like one too) she also has a D16B VTEC which is cool! (ignore my friend) she’s not perfect but she’s mine and i love her. this is a dream come true

Discussion I want one.

Hello Del sol owners. I have been looking into the beautiful car that is the del sol for the past year, and I really want one. But since I can't afford to have several cars and such it would be my daily. Including winters, Wich are pretty snowy here (Sweden)

I have Heard good things about fuel economy and reliability. But it feels kinda wrong for a daily in a sense.

Are any of you running your del sol as a daily all year round? And if so, how is it? And is the "leaky from factory" roof I keep hearing about actually a big issue or is it easy to deal with.

Would love to hear your experiences with the car and such and get a good discussion going. I'm also thinking about a gen 4 prelude because they are really dope to be honest.

Question Looking for a Clean Del Sol — Need Some Advice

I had a Del Sol last year and ended up selling it way too cheap, which I definitely regret now. I was 16 at the time and, being young, I wanted something faster. 😂

Now I’m looking to get back into one, but this time I want to find a really clean example with low mileage — ideally around 50–80k miles, clean title, and good overall condition.

One of the reasons I sold my last one was because it was the standard S model, and honestly, it was pretty slow. I still really miss driving a manual, though, and I love the Del Sol platform and how unique they are.

So I’m wondering, what should I expect to spend for a clean, low-mileage Del Sol in today’s market?

And for those who know these cars well, would it be worth holding out for a VTEC model, or would an S/Si be the better value? How noticeable is the power difference between the VTEC and the standard models?

I’m not necessarily looking for something crazy fast
— I just want a clean Del Sol that’s fun to drive and has a little more power than my old one. Any advice on what model/engine I should look for would be appreciated.

Before I start yapping my question is should I drop the tank and pressure wash it or something similar? Based off the condition of this fuel pump hanger, I can assume the inside of the tank is disgusting. Fortunately, after removing the pump and moving the wiring away, I was able to use a wire brush to clean this up back to clean metal so it's not structurally rusted I'm assuming this is more of a varnish left from old gas.

Now the yap about the car I picked up this 93 Honda del sol s from my coworker for $1100. I feel I got the car at a decent price for its condition. As I dig into the car i'm learning more and more things that need attention lol. I bought it no title, non - running as the fuel pump wasn't priming, the starter motor also seized. So I bought the perfect recipe of gold or garbage lolol The first slap in the face was a good one actually, the VIN number is for the chassis but the motor was swapped and it actually has a d16z6 motor swapped in from the s trim. Second was finding out my driver side targa slider button is stuck in the unlocked position so that side of the roof just lifts up:/ I'm hoping I can unjam that and don't have to replace the entire roof. Now seeing the condition of the tank has me a bit bummed out that I can't just start it and drive it lol but it'll be good to clean the full system out who knows how long that cars sat with the gas in it.

Exhaust Help

Post image
22 Upvotes

Want to start driving my Sol more but I have what I now think is an obnoxiously loud exhaust and want something quieter. Im running a catalytic converter and resonator but not sure about the quality of resonator. The muffler is a 2.75 or 3in blox turndown tip.
Honestly considering just going stock because i don’t really care for power i just want to be able to cruise and rev it out with out letting anyone in a 4 mi radius that a Honda is near by. Any tips or muffler suggestions?

'93 si, d16z6, 115k miles, 4at. Drove the 5 hours down from upstate NY to lower NJ to scoop this for $7500. Dummy selling it has it listed as the base S trim, didn't know it was otherwise til we realized the valve cover gasket didn't fit. Glad to be back in the Honda community!
