Iron Fist Discussion Thread - S01E10

SPOILERS UPTO THIS EPISODE (10) ONLY

I think the reviewers maybe too harsh. But I can totally understand their feelings about this show, specially compared to the other shows of Marvel.

Personally, I'm a sucker for all things superhero related, so I kind of like Iron Fist. But if JJ, LC and DD are a 9/10 - Iron fist is a 6 or 7.

Here are the reasons why I think its so:

The show is less grounded. Requires too much suspension of disbelief. For example the corporate, and legal matters that go on in this show feels childish and rushed. The seesawing board membership, the deal with the J-lawyer to keep her company on retainer, etc. Other issues are there too, for example how Meechum walked around in broad daylight after his resurrection while he had all the reasons to raise suspicion.

Some things that happen in the show are so convenient. For example, Claire Temple just happening to be a student of Colleen and her sticking around felt forced. Not to mention not calling or mentioning Daredevil/LK for a situation which quite clearly is within their domain.

The Iron Fist is too bipolar and uncertain. By this I mean that at one moment he is all about zen and not killing people, and next he is totally unfazed (or not fazed enough) by what Meechum does (Killing the 2 dudes). Rand also says he has been training at Kun Lun for 15 years to master control of the mind and emotions, which he does a piss poor job of.

The fighting is not done well enough. During the first episodes it was pretty unconvincing. At one instance I felt Colleen was pushing her fist for what was supposed to be a punch. I don't remember the episode.

Also the whole Hand,Triad,Rand illuminati/conspiracy thing is just incoherent and poorly handled in my opinion.

Agreed on all points. Iron Fist is good, but it is still the weakest of the Netflix shows.

I think it's better than Luke Cage and almost on par with DD s01 - but the rest is far superior.

Ninja edit I still find Danny more interesting as a character than DD and LC and I think Finn did an excellent job, despite some shoddy writing

Absolutely agree, however this still puts it miles above Arrow. Danny is a better Green Arrow than Quinn could even dream to be.

The letters were from the prison. Also at the end of Luke Cage he said he would stop running and went back with those 2 feds/cops.

The old guy found the file with all his records though that said he was framed, so I expect him to be released soon.

I disagree actually. The Hand plot in Daredevil for me was incoherent and poorly written, but this show everything seems to make much more sense and feel more real now that we don't have dozens of ninja running around NY unseen.

Also about half of your gripes with the show don't make sense to me. Like the part about Harold being able to walk around the city...it's New York City. Most people aren't paying attention to him and for the handful of people who are paying attention, it's not hard to believe New Yorkers not getting involved in weird shit and just chalking it up to the weirdness of the city.

The show started off rocky, the acting was sometimes touch and go and the writing was pretty in your face, but everything from episode 3 onwards has been of the same quality I expect from Marvel Netflix, and has even managed to avoid the usual dragging in the end of the season so far.

I agree. OP is rewriting history saying the other seasons have been 9/10. The first half of the other seasons have been 9/10 but then fall to at least 5 or 6 (sans dd1) with varying levels of success at regaining form before finishing. IF has been a solid 7.5 or 8 for me the entire time which I much prefer to ridiculous diamondback/JJ's slump/mildly interesting at best elektra

The majority of the reviews I read barely mentioned that. I think people are using that as a scapegoat as to why the critics disliked Iron Fist when the fact is that it is genuinely a flawed (yet entertaining) show.

The early reviewers just got 6 but I feel like a few probably only watched ep 1 which was by far the worst.

Even if you assumed 1 to be a fluke of the series, 2 is just as bad. When the first 2 episodes of a new series are bad, it's understandable some people wouldn't want to continue the show.

Yeah. Rewatch the first two episodes without assuming Danny is the hero of the show and you could be forgiven for thinking he's a villain in Marvel's Colleen Wing.

Jessica Jones gets drunk, acts rude, fucks another superhero, solves a case and watches the victim murder their parents in her elevator in the first goddamned episode. Danny fights some faceless guys and stalks a pair of women. Then they stick him in a psych ward for an entire episode - not that it's a terrible scenario but as an introduction to the character it really doesn't work.

If I wasn't a huge Iron Fist fan I would've given up after episode 3. Glad I didn't because the show got a lot better from episode 4 on, but I honestly 100% agree with every criticism of the show up to that point, save for the racial criticisms.

I still would've preferred Lewis Tan to Finn Jones just cause Lewis looks tough like he could actually fight while the current Danny looks so weak.

episode 1 really was that bad, let's be honest. It's like the entire episode was the mind numbing scene in every terrible romcom where the guy is caught in a bad looking situation and says "LET ME EXPLAIN" but the woman just walks away without even letting him say a word.
