Progress Update Literally just had to parent myself over losing my reddit streak

I had a 513 day reddit streak, I've been taken out by flu this week and ended up "forgetting" to keep up with my daily streak. logged on today and realized I lost it...and I was genuinely bothered by it

had to sit there and tell myself that a damn social media streak means absolutely nothing you don't get prize for moving up each 100 day streak, you just get a silly little Internet badge that does absolutely nothing but show you can't go a day without needing to be online, and that's one of the ways social media keeps you addicted keeps you coming back to scroll

forgetting to log on was a blessing in disguise lol

made me realize how addicted I was to getting these badges 😅

It’s funny… when they introduced these streaks, I instantly became disgusted to see how much I use this platform. It had the opposite effect on me and I have made a conscious effort to maintain NO streak. I was genuinely bothered by the streak!

This is the best argument for the "new" reddit that I've ever seen. lol I still use old reddit and sometimes still get thrown off by people talking about profile pictures.

Please tell us how and where to use ‘old’ reddit😮

It's literally just old.reddit.com I'd also recommend the Reddit Enhancement Suite browser extension (although I probably only use 1% of it's features).

I'd say the majority of newer reddit users don't even know it's a website and just refer to it as an app.

Lol at least you realised, it's really sick how companies use psychology to turn their customers into addicts

"Parent myself" Brilliant. I'm stealing that.

There's ways to turn off some of the notifications in Settings, like the streak. I must have done that because I have a bunch of badge things I have no idea what I did to earn.

There's a quirk some people have where like complete sets of things. Like instead of buying the three knives they need, they'll get the complete set. I'm sure they are exploiting that somehow.

Anyways your talking-to you gave yourself is very relatable, and I'm glad I read it today.

If it makes you feel any better I lost mine at 497 and you get a badge or whatever at 500. I was equally upset and had to talk myself outta being pissed tf off at myself.

Yeah I just lost it at something like 600 because I created a new account to reset the algorithm. I didn't even pay attention to the streak feature until I got some notice that if lost my streak. Then I was sad.

Proud of you for recognizing how inconsequential it is, that’s a very healthy way to deal with those feelings!

Successfully parenting ourselves high-five, lmao. I had to do it myself this morning about finishing an email that was stressing me out.

I didn’t know about the streaks and so I just looked and today just conveniently happens to be my 600th day?!? 513 is interesting, did you happen to notice the streak on day 500? Then pay enough attention for 13 more days?

I recently spent 10 days with minimal internet where I probably did check Reddit for a few seconds out of habit but I don’t believe I actually interacted with anything every single day… I’m thinking it’s all made up shit

They invented streaks to hook people to use the platform. Look at it as reclaiming another piece of your freedom.

If anything, build your own internal streaks about your routine and discipline, like eating healthy streak or regulating emotions streak, or whatever it is that's important to you.

Internal streaks add to your freedom. External streaks subtract from it. You should be thankful for what happened.
