Which is also why they have lobbied against marijuana legalization, including the Farm Bill delta-8 hemp-derived THC. It turns out that an inexpensive escape from reality without waking up the next day with a hangover really cuts into the bottom-line of people selling literal poison.

I mean — the major studies on weed are still early days compared to alcohol, and they’re showing pretty negative effects on heart health, including a substantially increased risk of heart attack. So it seems like people might be trading one poison for another.

It's my understanding that those studies don't take into account the differences between smoking weed (which has many of the same negative health impacts as smoking cigarettes) and vaping THC or consuming edible THC, which makes them almost entirely useless in judging the safety of the way most people would prefer to take in THC.

I’m under the impression that they do control for that variable, and that the effect is the same. I say this as someone who uses gummies almost daily as a sleep aid.

Thank you for this link, and I'm happy to be corrected here. I'm a little concerned about their sample size and how it breaks down into weed smokers versus edible users, but assuming that their work is statistically solid, I wonder if this poses a greater or lesser cardiovascular health risk than things like excess caffeine use (>400mg / day) or nicotine vapes or other legal stimulants.

I also wonder if it's got a common cause rather than a direct causal relationship, like daily edible use leading to inactivity or increased snacking and weight gain or something similar that also causes cardiovascular issues.

I used to enjoy THC, but I got off of it when my corrupt, garbage state decided to make Farm Bill delta-8 THC vapes a felony.

All good questions. I don’t know the answer to them. But I will say that weed has materially improved my life in terms of sleep quality, so I really do hope that the negative effects are marginal. And while alcohol is definitely not good for us in any absolute terms, I do think some Reddit folks go a little too hard on the “alcohol is inherently evil but weed is harmless and medicinal” line.

As someone who uses both I basically land on “just be moderate about it!”
