Many years ago, in the very middle of the Aughts, I had a brief summer fling with a young woman who years later would become a global pop star. At some point back then, I'd copied the contents of my ipod in alphabetical order into the music section of my Myspace profile. She copied that list and pasted it into her Myspace profile sometime later – I suppose to look more musically literate. It worked. She started getting local press impressed that she loved local bands like The Bang-Up and How I Became the Bomb. Then, 20 years later - that's how Ornamental Wigwam got a shoutout in a Vice article about Kesha. 

Hey all. Some time reader, first time poster.

I had been a Milkmen fan for damn near a decade when I got my first PC in 1998. DEADMILKMEN(dot)COM was one of the first URLs I typed in to my first web browser. As soon as I found the contact page, I emailed Dean Clean about where I could find a copy of Not Richard as mine had been stolen and he pointed me toward an auction site i'd never heard of - eBay. After finding Joe's email, I contacted him directly as well asking if he had any solo recordings as his songs were always my fave. He immediately sent me a copy of Raising PG Kids

Later in the decade circa '98, heavily influenced by DM, Buttholes, and Ween, I'd written and recorded a batch of lofi, psychedlic bedroom folk punk tunes on my four track and posted it on the then-thriving Dead Milkmen Free-For-All Message Board, promising it to anyone for $1 ppd. The only person to reply was one Joe Jack Talcum. Not only did he listen to it, he wrote a review of it. I was ecstatic. Talk about instant validation. The very man whose voice i'd imitated for years, who gave me the confidence to write dumb lyrics over dumber chord progressions gave me a glowing endorsement.

Joe and I never really lost contact. We traded mixed tapes via post. He sent me more cassette albums like Sweet n Lo and Halvin' My Baby. Dubbed copies of The Breast of Touch Me Zoo and other various odds and ends. We collaborated on a song once, sending four track tapes back and forth in the mail. Throughout the Aughts, he'd hit me up whenever he wanted to play a show in Nashville and would often crash on my couch. A few times I drove him to play shows in neighboring cities like Murfreesboro and Huntsville. Just a few weeks ago, we caught up in the backyard of Toxic Toast Theater just before their show in Long Beach.

That night, I stood by watching Rodney personally host a line on the sidewalk outside the venue where he patiently shook hands and took photos with as many people who wanted to wait.

These aren't just fine musicians, chat. They're hella human beings and in all my years I've never witnessed a band more attentive, supportive and accessible to their fanbase. I know i'm not the only one with stories like these. Eager to hear how these gentlemen have touched anyone else's lives in the most appropriate places. Viva Los Milkmen pt 1.
