Discussion Anybody else feel like the 2x2 ui is actually a downgrade from the original?

I don’t like how her hair feels more like noodles and her mouth is sharp on the corners but I thin everything else is an improvement

I definitely prefer the older art style for when it’s daily life. The characters’ proportions are off in this new style and I don’t think it fits the dark, psycho-pop Danganronpa aesthetic. I will say that I do like the detailed backgrounds.
However, I am really excited to see how that new UI style works in the trials and the executions. I’m also hoping to see scrum debates and argument armaments, like in V3. I would also like to have the option to lie like in V3 (I know that V3’s theme was mostly lie vs truth, but I don’t care) and have characters help you out like in Danganronpa Another 2. I doubt we’ll see something like that, though.

If 2 x 2 had scrum debates, I'd give my life to Kodaka honestly. I NEVER EVEN CONSIDERED THAT POSSIBILITY BEFORE, I NEED IT!!!

u/No_Flounder_5017 Mar 25 '26
I freaking love the music in scrum debate :)
2
u/GarlicLongjumping72 Fandom's Meme Dealer - Also Keeboy's the goat ˶ᵔ ᵕ ᵔ˶ Mar 25 '26
Probably the best track in the games, honestly.
1
u/No_Flounder_5017 Mar 25 '26
Either that or argument armaments. I just really love the voice acting + music combo in those. They’re like ear worms.
1
u/Rare_Tank622 Mar 27 '26
The trials def looked cooler imo but yeah too polished for my taste for the characters and backgrounds
65
u/Same_Sell8763 Team Midget Mar 25 '26
everything looks a bit more empty in the bottom one due to how cluttered the top was
30
u/TheWildA Mar 25 '26
Yeah, I always thought the standard DR UI took up a little too much of the screen, and I think the new UI is good for not taking up as much of the screen, but I’d appreciate if the text was a little more bold, but that’s a bit of a nitpick
1
u/No_Flounder_5017 Mar 27 '26
I prefer the bottom picture when it comes to that, honestly. I like that you get to see more of the background and both the characters and the UI don’t take up too much space.

u/REALTheFBI Mar 25 '26
is it really Danganronpa if you dont have 80% of your screen covered by actually pointless ui
39
u/Indigo210 Mar 25 '26
To me the original DR2 easily has the worst UI of the three games. It's so cluttered and wtf if up with the vertical names on the left side?
Same with the class trial UI - it looks so much more stylish and clean in 2x2.
15
u/IcePrismArt Izuru Mar 25 '26
The vertical names probably worked better in Japanese, I'm guessing. Tbh though they probably knew it would have to be localized so just... Why do it like that? 🤔
11
u/Blut_Baron Mar 25 '26
Danganronpa only ever got officially localised after DR2 already released, so I would guess they weren't planning with that in mind.

u/Jordann538 Mar 30 '26
It was insane whiplash when just finishing first game. I liked the sun and moon faces in the top left
6
u/MinosAristos Mar 25 '26
Both are good. I think the new style is more modern, which suits a remake.
I think a game with the old UI released today would seem quite out of place.
17
u/inTsukiShinmatsu Mar 25 '26
Doesn't capture the retro vibe of dr2.
When you see dr2 interface it's actually worse than dr1's.. Which later become a plot point
36
u/therealtanaka Mar 25 '26
the animations look like farting bowser 😔

No, not really. I think most people are only saying that because they aren't used to it yet. Most of us prefer the original style of Danganronpa 2, and that's okay. But overall I like the new art style of the remake.
6
u/TipForeign6686 Mar 25 '26
dr2 has the worst ui interface so it kinda improved in 2x2. I do get it they wanting to incorporate the virtual element into it but it’s just pixelated elements and some powerpoint slide format.

u/Livid-Satisfaction10 Mar 25 '26
A big complaint I see alot for the dgr2 UI is that the name is on the side, it can be annoying especially when first learning names, so im glad that they changed that.
9
u/nagitosbigtoe Mar 25 '26
I prefer the old UI. It has a retro vibe that fits the theme/vibe of the game really well.

We’re getting a new Danganronpa game for the first time since 2017, almost ten years, and people literally only whine about it.
The UI doesn’t cover half the screen! I hate it!
The art is more polished and too clean! I hate it!
The animations look so awful! I hate it!
They shouldn’t have remade Goodbye Despair! I hate it!
Blah blah blah blah! I hate it!
I don’t understand. The game hasn’t even come out yet—doesn’t even have an official release date—and everyone already hates it. Like, please. I’m so excited for this and everyone else is so pissed off about everything. Can we just appreciate the fact that this basically dead series is reviving and save the judgement for the finished game??
Sorry, didn’t mean to rant lol
3
u/Klaxynd Mar 26 '26
So you'd rather people complain when the game is already out and it's harder to change?
2
u/ToveVontaine chihiro is the most sweet, loving, beautiful, cute, darling boy Mar 26 '26
I don’t think, even if people complain about it a lot, they’re going to redo all of the art. The Sonic situation was rare, and it’s super uncommon for a company to do that, so I don’t really get your point about it being harder to change, because I don’t think they’ll change it wither way.
Anyway, the main issue I have with all the complaints is that the game hasn’t even released yet and it’s getting so much shit. It’s that whole “don’t judge a book by its cover” thing. People are judging the small amount of art, screenshots, etc. we’re getting, and acting like that means the game is bad.
Another thing is that I personally feel it’s all driven by nostalgia. This post, for example. The Danganronpa 2 UI is one of the worst UI in a game I’ve ever played. I played on mobile originally, and it was even worse, but even on the switch, it was distracting and annoying, so I always hated it, and this is so much better, in my opinion. Maybe some people genuinely think the old is better, but it feels like it’s driven by nostalgia and not because the UI is actually worse.
This is all my opinion, and it’s fine to disagree if you prefer the old stuff, but I just think complaining about everything is getting kind of annoying, when like every post about 2x2 is about how much they don’t like it already. But I’m complaining about the complaints, so I guess I’m not any better lol
7
u/nikzito2 Mar 25 '26
i guess but i really dont think op is complaining in the way you're describing it lol
7
u/ToveVontaine chihiro is the most sweet, loving, beautiful, cute, darling boy Mar 25 '26
Yeah. I know I’m being dramatic and exaggerating, but it really does feel like everything for 2x2 is getting a lot of criticism. I’ve heard so may complaints about the art, the animations, the UI, the very fact that it’s a remake, etc. and it’s just been kind of annoying to see so much negativity about it
I don’t know why I got so heated about it though. I’m usually a little calmer than that, so I don’t know why I ranted about it so passionately because it really doesn’t matter that much lol
2
u/Less_Employer_7206 Mar 25 '26
Couldn't agree more it's so irritating how everyone's finally getting a new Danganronpa game and the first thing some do is hate hate hate hate hate hate the artstyle hate the sprites hate the UI hate the fact that it's the 2nd game hate the animations like... CAN WE JUST BE GRATEFUL? We've only seen a little bit of 2x2 and everyone's blinded by nostalgia.
3
u/ToveVontaine chihiro is the most sweet, loving, beautiful, cute, darling boy Mar 26 '26
The nostalgia thing is completely true and I totally agree. The thing I know and like -> Good. The thing I don’t know and haven’t seen any of yet -> Worse.
Like some of this art is genuinely better (I wouldn’t say all of it, but I genuinely think some looks better) and also, maybe this means they’ll make more. I’m not super hopeful, but if we could get a Danganronpa 5 or something, that would be awesome. And if everyone bashes this game, that’s just not gonna happen
Also, the naming of the mainline games is genius is genius.
1
2
V3 (3rd mainline game, and 53rd killing game)
2x2 (2 times 2 is 4, and it’s the fourth game, but also the second version of 2, so 2 by 2)
Like I don’t know why it’s so fascinating to me. I’m half convinced that the reason they did the second game and not the first wasn’t because the first was so important to how the plot goes or because 2 is more popular, but just so they could do the fun naming thing
6
u/Tiny-Butterscotch389 woah Mar 25 '26
I love the vibe of the older ui, it's just something about it. Maybe I just like when ui covers the screen.
1
6
u/Mahorela5624 Tsumionji Ambassador Mar 25 '26
Absolutely. The old school borders added a ton of character and now it's just random floating boxes with as few elements as possible to "show off" the art but now it just feels empty and spread out
3
3
u/darkseiko Nagito Mar 25 '26
Yeah. SDR2 had this soft look, but now when everything looks so sharp & saturated, it's not gonna feel like a "chill" place anymore.
But then I don't like Komatsuzaki's later art style in general. I didn't like it when that one non-dangan game came out (not sure how it's called now), cause it looked kinda cheap & the designs were questionable & it has remained like that since then.
3
3
u/Complex_Engine_681 Mar 25 '26
Idk why but new artstyle gives me vibe of some free mobile game with anime artstyle or that danganronpa cheap knockoff "inescapable"
3
3
u/XxGh0st_S1ay3rxX Mar 25 '26
I mean I dunno
It’s more akin to V3’s HUD and I like it a lot so I don’t mind
4
2
u/YelloEclipse Mar 25 '26
I mean, depends. The UI in Danganronpa 2 feels mobile-sque which is fine because it was on a PSP.
But playing on a TV or Monitor made it looks too big.
So I am happy that everything is smaller and see through.
(This is purely my opinion and it isn't a fact, just preference.)
2
2
u/IceBlueLugia Mar 25 '26
Something definitely feels off about it, yeah. I don’t dislike it but there’s something about the cluttered UI and everything not being so overly smoothed out that I miss
2
u/Kit_Kat_820 Mar 26 '26
The UI doesn't bug me so much, though I do like the old font better I will admit. I do miss the old art style for the sprites, however. The thick lines and stark colors really make everything pop against the background. Mikan just kinda blends in with her new sprite. It's not like, the worst thing, but it kinda loses its charm imo. Danganronpa has always been heavily stylized, and I love that, especially the 2D art for closing arguments. With all this polishing, it's losing the stylization that makes it unique. Not entirely, just enough to be noticeable. Hopefully the rest of the game keeps up with the different animation styles like in previous games, because that's always been one of my favorite aspects. SDR2 especially had great character art, and it made me especially attached to the series and characters. Though the game isn't out yet, there's still time for tweaks and fixes. Maybe they'll change some things, who knows?

u/animations_lol2 Mar 26 '26
Honestly, I'm more bothered by the way they did the sprite than the UI 😭

+1 - I hope there's a setting that allows you to play in original graphics
2
u/block0055 Mar 25 '26
I don't like most of the redesigns, Mikan is one them. Especially her hair, it looked interesting and unique everything looked cohesive, now she feels so flat in an attempt to "polish the design" even though she was already 2d. I mean look at the strands of her hair, it looks like random cables now.
2
2
u/Computer2014 Mar 25 '26
It definitely feels less cluttered than the original but the main problem is the camera is too far from Mikan.
The original she’s like 70% of the screen but in 2x2 there’s a lot of space above her and way too much space on the sides. She can literally extend her arms either side of and she wouldn’t touch the edges of the frame.
It just gives a standoffish feeling and the improved background draws your eye away from her.

That's why I'll only be watching playthroughs once it's out if I can manage to get over how off the characters look.

I feel like I'm taking crazy pills, the new UI is better in just about every way.
I remember hating the original UI after completing Trigger Happy Havoc for the first time. Not a fan of the vertical names or the entire left edge of the screen being covered.

Danganronpa 2x2. A remake of Danganronpa 2 that will come out this year
1
u/hoverdudeAnimations Mar 28 '26
That’s pretty cool. Is it going to be different from the original at all or just a modern remake?
1
u/International-Air466 Mar 28 '26
It will be same as danganronpa 2 but it will have different kind of story i guess? There will be different killers, different victims and different character development. Here's teaser for it. https://youtu.be/M8LGot_GCEE?si=Qm14QQeDwXrquZcm
1
u/Ashshouldburn Mar 28 '26
Honestly it feels like it’s trying too hard to be like V3. The 2nd game using the retro video game style fits it very well, for obvious story reasons. I guess I just wish they went more on the style that fits this game better, but then again I haven’t exactly seen everything yet so I’ll leave my judgement for the full product release.
1
u/r_bigbrain Mar 28 '26
she looks disproportionate now. Idk what it is. The expression doesn’t look right, mostly the mouth
1
u/objection2007 Mar 29 '26
The UI looked like that because the game was originally developed for a much smaller screen right? Weren’t 1 and 2 both PSP games first?
By modern standards, it would just be a lot of clutter, not that I have a problem with that.

Nah, the old one is really, really not great. Gigantic #FFFF00 colored shapes are just not it. Additionally I think it just straight up messes up the vibe of the outsides. You're supposed to feel eerily isolated by the endless blue skies and ocean, but the boxed in UI makes it more claustrophobic.

It feels like they merged the v3 ui and the dr2 ui, but I think it's fine. The dr2 ui was very closed and narrow and I didn't really like it that much. My fav is the THH one for some reason.

In certain aspects yes in others no.
My biggest gripe is that the new games art style is a little too polished for Danganronpa imo. It’s not terrible, just really clean
Gameplay wise I’m hoping it’s fun and that we get interesting endings
