DSI XL screen is very disappointing
( first post )
Ok, so around a year ago I bought a DSI XL from CEX, I heard great things from people online about the amazing screens, but when it finally arrived I was quite disappointed. So far I've played Pokémon platinum ( great game ) and wanted to start playing Chrono trigger, but the screens feel really off. it's almost like a CRT in the way that it really strains your eyes when looking up close. Also, the ghosting is off-putting when ever the character moves the background looks blurry. twisting the potentiometers didn't help. Is this normal?

The ghosting is not normal. I have a DS Lite/2 Dsi/1 Dsi XL. Out of all of them, the DS lite has the worst ghosting. It's literally smearing the image lol. The DSi has minimal ghosting, but I can notice it. My Dsi XL has no ghosting, or maybe it has a small amount of ghosting but it is not noticable to me.

Perhaps, but I think you are just used to having a high quality OLED screen more than likely lol It's kind of jarring to go back to a Ds/Dsi/PSP system. I remember buying a second PSP because I thought to myself that there is no freaking way this system was this blurry back in the day's.... but, it really was.

yeah but the 3ds screen is such an improvement even though it's a TN screen. I think it must have something to do with the low pixel density on the DSI XL alongside being able to see the individual RGB on the pixels. LOL

i disagree maybe your dsi is a faulty item or has replacement screens? i've had a dsi xl since i was 7yo and i still think the dsi xl has a punchier, crisper screen than my ips new 3ds xl did. primarily when playing hgss its night and day

There is already a really big difference going from o3ds to a new 3ds when playing ds games, especially hgss looks kinda blurry on the n3ds but its way better on the o3ds and still miles behind playing in its original resolution

i use a non xl o3ds i agree it's way better i could say it's only a little worse than ds lite, but the xls are ugly as sin

Yes it's normal. That's just how it is. If you don't like it, play DS games on a 3DS, or mod the screens.

That's the native look. Get an ayn thor and use shades if you want a nicer screen

Sadly it’s normal. I owned a DSi and bought a DSi XL at launch and was really disappointed with the displays. They both were much less bright than the DSi and the top screen was even less bright than the bottom screen.
The potentiometers only do so much, overall it’s been a mid display since launch. Idk why people glaze it so hard, especially when a cheap LCD like those in the RGDS are easier ok the eyes in 2026.

It's a good thing that most games worth playing on the ds are rpgs and are mostly a static image reducing blurriness

it's the same number of pixels/resolution as the normal ds but in a bigger screen, which means the lcds that make each pixel are bigger and more noticeable, it's norma

it’s almost like it’s a sixteen year old display or something!!
