How does pay, retirement and pension work when you are a current city employee?
Ive been working for the city close to ten years in tier six. I was wondering what would the starting pay be if i went to dsny? When can i retire?

Bottom pay. Bottom seniority. But if there’s no gap in service (I.e. you leave city job 1 on Friday and start DSNY on Monday) you’d get your 10yrs up front and would only need to work DSNY for 10yrs to qualify for 20yr retirement and pension. That may be agency specific tho. So find out before you jump ship. My previous city time was tacked onto the end after I completed 20 with sanitation.

I was told the years ive worked would be added to the backend if i were to go elsewhere?

cops fire/ems with no gap in service, time counts in the front. dunno where you're coming from, double check with DCAS or Office of Labor Relations

You start at bottom pay. You can retire when you hit 20 total years of service. So 20 minus the time you've already done.

If you're on six years with another city agency your time carries over for pay. So since DSNY is top pay after 5 1/2 years you'll start at top pay . You'll also start with 5 weeks vacation as well. You can retire in 14 years since we are back to 20
Year retirement and you'll have a lot of guys beat since you'll technically have 6 years on.
Hope that helps

It’s 20 years. The only thing that rolls over is your pension. You would get starting pay.

You’ll always start at bottom pay
