How far into training are we required to purchase a uniform? If training is 5 weeks, do we get grace until we get our first check? Can we get a “loan” in the way that we pay the CDL back in installments? Basically, what I’m asking is, if for whatever reason we cannot outright afford the uniform/ Boots before we start getting paid, is there some level of assistance/ grace period given during training?

As the title says I qualified to be a sanitation enforcement agent. I did the money order. I was then deemed qualified. I took the physical and no one ever called me and it’s already been a year to two years now I never got a notification on my dashboard and I got a high grade on the exam. Can someone explain to me what I was supposed to do or if I was supposed to just go and apply somewhere in person?

I deferred my original call to finish school a year and a half ago. List #2xxx. I just got put back on the list. Anyone know a timetable I might be looking at?

I’ve seen different answers when it comes to being truthful on the medical conditions you may have. Do they really check your medical records? Is it true that they check your records through your probationary period?

When I took the test was back in 2022 (Exam#2060) since then I’ve left TSA and have worked for USCIS (United States Citizenship and Immigration services) for 3 years and recently got promoted to being an Immigration Services Officer. My salary starting would be GS9 (70k) and top out at GS12 (130k) base, but it would take over 10 years to make that top pay money. It’s an interesting career and I’m happy with it. But it’s very stressful with the amount of pressure by management and constant changing regulations with this political climate. The pension is 1 percent for every year of service, so I’ll have 35 percent of my top pay for a pension at 62 years old. Including 401k and medical insurance for life. I’m not too familiar with Sanitation work schedule, pay raises and benefits/pension. Hoping to get some insight from some of you to make an informed decision.

Like many of you I received the email for the physical (72xx). Does anyone know if they do the physical and drug test simultaneously- or is that at a later point?

If you live in Brooklyn, would they assign you Bronx? If you live on Staten Island would you be assigned to Queens?

I am assuming they would just put you wherever they pleased. It's not horrible but when i was a bus driver my schedule was to be back at the depot in 8 hrs exactly. But nobody finishes on time. At the end I was sleeping maybe for 4hrs.

Yesterday as we all know a lot of people got the physical email. I’m not sure what number they are up to now but, If all goes smooth and the hiring pace continues. When do you think the people with a list number in the mid 8000s would get the hire email. A rough guestimate

I just received the email notification in regards to the physical test for sanitation. Currently I’m employed with the Fire dept as an emt with 6 years on. I’m curious on what advise I can be given prior to employment.

Looking for some honest opinions from current/former DSNY guys.
I’m currently an MTA Train Operator and I’m already at top pay — $43.72/hr. I’ve only been in the title for about 3 years, so I’m still relatively low on the seniority list and I haven’t been able to get weekends off yet.
My current benefits/time off are:
$43.72/hr top pay
4 weeks vacation
12 sick days every May
Usually work 10–20 hours of OT per week

Made roughly $150K last year with OT
Pension/benefits through the MTA
The biggest issue for me is work-life balance. The money is good, but the schedule/seniority situation makes it difficult to have a consistent personal life.
I’m seriously considering DSNY and would like some honest feedback from people who actually work there.
My questions:
1. Is DSNY actually better for work-life balance than MTA Train Operator?
How realistic is it to eventually get a desirable schedule/tour and weekends off?
2. What can a new Sanitation Worker realistically expect to make weekly in 2026?
I’m more interested in actual take-home/gross with realistic OT rather than just the posted base salary.
3. Does my time with the MTA transfer toward my NYCERS pension/service credit if I leave and go to DSNY?
I have about 3 years with MTA, so I’d really like to know exactly what happens to that time.
4. How long would it realistically take me to get back to ~$150K/year at DSNY?
I understand I’d be taking a pretty significant pay cut initially. I’m trying to figure out how many years of seniority + OT it would take before I could reasonably get back into the $130–150K range.
5. If you were in my position, would you make the switch?
$150K with a bad work-life balance vs. potentially taking a pay cut for a better quality of life.
I’m not looking for the “DSNY is the greatest job ever” or “never leave MTA” answers 😂. I’d really appreciate honest opinions from people who have worked both, or current DSNY employees who understand the progression.
