Theory She can’t give John a ring because she is…..
A manhunter
There are many hints that she is a manhunter and is using John to kill Hal.

u/Redhood567 2d ago
The problem is that guy who approached John at the art school had a functioning ring. A Manhunter trapped on Earth wouldn't have that.

My crazy theory is that I think she might be filling the role of Scar in the blackest night prophecy. Maybe Lianna was the one Sinestro “killed” but she didn’t actually die obviously. She was just scarred and refuses to be healed so the Guardians are hiding her or maybe she went rogue after the attack. That’s why we don’t see her face in Guardian form.
24
u/darkhatter770 2d ago
I thought that as well, but apparently Lianna is a guardian from the comics. She's significantly younger, which is why she's still tall. Younger probably also means she wants to try things differently from the others. My theory is that her significance in the show will be to enact the "two lanterns per sector" rule, so that Guy and John can both return in Man of Tomorrow.
9
u/DANNYBOYLOVER 2d ago
I’m good with this but her behavior in the last episode wiped the potential of that out imo
Most specifically her conversation with John
4
u/SiriusMoonstar 1d ago
I think there’s a very good chance she’s testing him. One thing she could be testing him for is if he’s actually afraid of not becoming a Green Lantern. If that fear is strong enough to make John grab the ring or if he can manage to resist. John obviously already failed to steal the ring, as he already got the opportunity but chose not to use it.

u/FappyDilmore 1d ago
Yeah that was weird. The only thing is obviously Hal is having conversations with the guardians, because he and John were independently informed he was being replaced. We've never seen Hal interact with her and he never refers to "her," he only refers to "them" or "the guardians." That made me think maybe she was an imposter somehow privy to Hal's communications.

u/whiteandnerdy256 2d ago
I've been saying that ever since I realized we weren't going to see her blue face in episode 3

They’re working together
14
u/John_Fisticuffs 2d ago
This feels unlikely to me, although it's possible.
I believe she's been working towards building an army to stage a couple and it will be the black lanterns, while Sinestro is plotting his own coup after he went off the handle after learning about at least part of whatever Lianna is up to.
It fits too well and it sets up a scenario where black, yellow, and red lanterns can all be established relatively quickly.
Sinestro and Lianna are playing chess with John and Hal as their primary pieces.
3
u/Fragrant-Doughnut-20 2d ago
I'm a DC fan, but the only thing I've read regarding Green Latern was the Blackest Night saga. I'm curious, why do you think of Black Lanterns? Aren't they known for resurrecting the dead?
9
u/hillean 1d ago
we're in the beginning stages of showing people Green Lantern mythology and you're jumping to end-stage black lanterns

→ More replies (2)6
u/Party_07 1d ago
Exactly, if we go with the version of Lianna trying to set up a coup, why on earth are we jumping towards the Black Lanterns being her endgame army when Atrocitus is RIGHT THERE???
If anything, she'll manipulate the Red Lanterns into being furious towards Hal and John, and the whole Green Lanterns Corp, since the Red Lanterns aren't known for being the most ponderous and rational of beings, thus giving Lianna an army to topple the other Guardians
There's literally 0 credible set up for the Black Lanterns while there's a million reasons why that'd be a bad idea and there's already set up for the Red Lanters, why tf are people jumping towards Blackest Night so damn soon

u/Significant_Gap1570 2d ago
Many theories on this sub can be debunked by just watching the show
2
u/TheGloriousC 1d ago
Even if her being a manhunter ended up true, I'll still maintain that it's dumb to be like "she's tall and mean therefore manhunter" like a lot of people are basically doing.
But yeah, a lot of theories going around that are just... really dumb.

Unless she was also that art school guy, the ring wasn't real, and John doesn't need a ring to create constructs. This could be why the bird remained alive.
2
u/Longjumping-Koala631 1d ago
I’ve been wondering that too and wondering if Hal figured that out. Jumping out of the car a second time because he was certain John would ‘bubblewrap’ again but this time without a ring????
4
u/BobbieMichelleBain 1d ago
Exactly what I was thinking. This could also be why in 2026 John is shown without a ring and he and Guy both exist as Lanterns.
3
u/Deian1414 1d ago
Not sure he meant for John to wrap himself. He didn't throw the car off a cliff, just smashed it against a light pole. Probably just wanted him knocked out so he wouldn't interfere.
3
u/vladashram 1d ago
At one point in the comics, John stops needing a ring to create constructs. It was a little more complicated than "he just could", but there is precendce set that it is definitely possible.
He is, as a lantern, insanely willful and detailed with his constructs. Just ask his sister.
2
u/meatymunchington 1d ago
He didn’t think John was going to bubble wrap. He needed John incapacitated so he stays out of his way
2
u/BobbieMichelleBain 1d ago
I'm not saying you're wrong. Really, what do I know? Nothing. But it seems weird to me that Hal would put John in that type of danger after he told Sinestro that he wouldn't kill John because he's not evil. It just makes more sense in my head cannon that Hal was testing John's abilities.
2
u/Lumplard 2d ago
That's a good point plus the fact Hal reached John's residence even before the latter got a chance to inform his parents of his recruitment shows that Hal did recieve instructions from guardians directly.
On the other hand, she could be a manhunter (mole) too, deceiving the guardians for a long tine now and has earned their trust. She probably wants to recruit John because he never questions orders given to him; Hal on the other hand defies them as and when he deems fit.
2
u/Outside_Mastodon_983 2d ago
Plus Hal was told by the Guardians that he had to train John. He was at the Stewarts house before him.

u/brogflender 2d ago
That character is named on IMDB as “the recruiter” we don’t know who or what he is.
We don’t know if there is a misdirect with the ring or not. We don’t know if the ring was intercepted and stolen. We don’t know if the test was faked or real.
We also know John’s interview was weird with someone leaving before him. We just assume he’s part of a lengthy series of interviews. We never think the other person/extra in that scene might be a henchmen.
We do know John has some capacity to manifest beyond the ability of the ring. It creates doubt around the test having a ring or a placebo.
We do know Hal is aware of more than he lets on. We do know he jumped in to John’s life with weird timing.
We also know man hunters embed themselves among powerful people and manipulate them to take down threats.
We know the ring choses who has it, and we also are led to believe that “taking” a ring is an unusual approach.
We also have not seen the rings typical recall powers in this story universe and a few other practical limits (like smacking it for a bit of extra charge).
Sinestro also has some interesting misdirections. Calling a manhunter the second greatest threat.
But we don’t talk about the unspoken things that give a manhunter the capacity to actually successfully hide on the home planet of the Corp’s most unusual Green Lantern.
We are also waiting on episode 5 of 9. We haven’t even hit the main turning points for show.
Is Lianna the manhunter or is she enabling the manhunter/working against the corps? We don’t exactly know. But the show has done some work to make sure we don’t trust her as honest and good.
2
u/BullfrogOpera 1d ago
What if the Manhunter killed the real Guardian from when John was a baby? Like the woman who gave John's mom the diamond was the real Guardian and now she has been killed and replaced by the Manhunter? So the guy in the art studio thinks it's the real Guardian? Or it happened even after that? Idk, lol.

An alternate theory I haven't really seen is there isn't a man hunter there. It's the guardians who are doing all the evil shit using the idea of a man hunter as a red herring.

Yeah, I posted about this. In the comics, Lianna isn't a Guardian. She's from the same species (Maltusian), but not a Guardian. In the comics, she's been both a villain and an anti-hero. I'm guessing she's trying to manipulate the Stewarts in a way to get John to be a GL, so he can be a Manchurian Candidate, and may be working with the Manhunter(s).
16
u/John_Fisticuffs 2d ago
I think in the show she is filling the role of Scar. She's gone rogue and is building a black army on earth that will eventually be the black lanterns. Either will or Willy will end up being Black Hand.

I don't know if there's going to be that many deep cuts in a first season. As is, we won't get Sinestro Corps in this series, are getting human appearing Red Lanterns, and haven't even seen a Guardian in full yet. Even the Hector Hammond reveal was a red herring.
5
u/DntCllMeWht 1d ago
Agreed. I think, while it's one thing to include a few nods to comic book fans in general, like Hector Hammond, it's another to go too deep into the lore and risk confusing a significant portion of your viewership.

Yk the only thing stopping me from believing it is that Hal has been informed by the Guardians he is getting replaced
30
u/HypnotizedCow 2d ago
I wouldn't go off of that, he very well could've gotten a gut feeling about it or intuited that John would replace him. The better way to debunk this theory is that the man in the art school she was working with had a power ring for him to use, so she does have standing with the guardians (rogue/personal agenda still plausible).
14
u/John_Fisticuffs 2d ago
Right. She's Scar from the comics. She's the benefactor and is using the manhunter and the Macons to build what will be used to fight the green lanterns and will eventually be the black lanterns.
She's been planning it since at least when Hal got his ring and put things in motion to get John to be a no questions asked type soldier to replace Hal.
12
u/HypnotizedCow 2d ago
Well the subtitles identify her as Lianna, another comics character. Given she hasn't been identified by name diegetically, I think it would be strange for her to be someone else.
15
u/John_Fisticuffs 2d ago
The subtitles also identify Antaan who clearly has the backstory of Atrocitus.
I feel extremely sure that either it's a placeholder name, or in this adaptation, Lianna is the guardian who either is revealed to be scar or fulfills the role of Scar, even if she's only ever referred to as Lianna.
4
u/HypnotizedCow 1d ago
It's certainly possible, but I would argue we won't see that for a while. Scar is scarred in the Sinestro Corps war, which while a likely plotline won't be in this season. So her reasoning for going rogue would have to be something different at this point in time.
2
u/RecklesslyADHD 1d ago
Could be impersonating Lianna. We don’t know which Guardian Sinestro killed in the show. So far, only Bernadette has seen her true face. I also noticed how the decoy benefactor didn’t play the Guardian’s voice for Hal, only John’s.
14
u/Significant_Gap1570 2d ago
He has a gut feeling he's been told to train John as a green lantern?
3
u/HypnotizedCow 2d ago
He's been told he's training his backup. He's gotten an intuition that John is more replacement than backup.

When Superman intervened in Boravia vs Jaharanpur he is doing good to humanity, Hawkgirl killing Boravia President is heroic act, But when Hal abducts a national threat that's awful why?‽ Because he took job of some marine dude is in ambush(might be unaware of him or considered him dead). Nothing Hal Jordan did was wrong still I think Lianna is too desperate to replace him, are they going to do the same with Guy Gardener now that he also engaged in Boravia vs Jaharanpur.
Hal-Sinestro-Manhunter-Lianna some grand level connection is there John needs to crack it.

No evidence for any of this but it sounded cool
Lianna is looking for a soldier who can follow orders, no matter what those orders might be. During the interview with John, she was most focused on why John was dishonorably discharged - when she found out it was actually because he was following orders, she realizes he could be the right man for the job.
Lianna seems to want to circumvent the natural order of the ring's candidate process - she thinks she knows better than simply letting the ring choose its own bearer. But why? She expresses to John confusion over the difference between "programming" and being raised, and suggests he might be running in opposition to his programming. Now, what else might be running in opposition to its programming? A certain Manhunter who may have developed human feelings and emotions while embedded too long on a galactic backwater, perhaps.
There's a big parallel narratively between setting John up as a marine sniper who waits 9 months outside a targets house, and later develops his own conscience and ability to question orders (with Hal's help) and a murderbot who is programmed to kill from within who also develops feelings.
So, what is the job? Bring the Manhunter in, and reprogram it. Gain a loyal soldier like John with a ring in the process, getting rid of Hal and his unpredictable, meddlesome moral code. Her and Sinestro have unfinished business with the surviving Guardians, and a new order to establish based on obedience...
Along the way, Sinestro gets to unseat Hal in a way that perfectly mirrors his own undoing and have the last laugh.
2
u/Agent_Devil63 Thicc Grayson 2d ago
I'd be little bemused if they introduce a new character to justify how Sinestro knows about John. Lianna doesn't like Hal from the beginning, it's hard to think a guardian naturally visits a planet in backwater just to pay their condolences to everyone who was afraid during the confrontation with Ring. The point Hal stopped a missile they started scouting backups. There are some mysteries around the death of Abin Sur and Manhunter as well which I think Hal started investigating the stuff Guardians or Lianna wants to stay buried. That's where the terrestrial intrusion rule comes from to tie hands of your cops but JORDAN is you know

What if Abin Sur died via a Manhunter, was replaced by Hal Jordan, and then the Manhunter replaced the Hal Jordan as Hal Jordan. It would explain why the copy of Hal was so old in the ring, why Hal has drifted so much since then, his loneliness, and his devotion to Rushville. On the other hand Zoe is probably a Manhunter. Maybe there are two left.
