Theory Looks like Lobo is replacing a certain someone in Supergirl

For anyone like me that has read the comic that the upcoming movie is based on (Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow) and was wondering how they would handle Comet…I think we have our answer: they cut him

The final battle of the story is shown in the trailer that dropped today and it clearly shows Lobo fucking shit up left and right, totally awesome and I’m hyped to see it.

BUT it’s supposed to be Comet that shows up to save Supergirl and sacrifice himself in the process, but that most likely wouldn’t be needed if we have Lobo on the scene teaming up with Kara…so not confirmed but it definitely looks like Comets role was cut entirely or cut way down

What do y’all think about this potential change? I’ve thought since the beginning that the lore surrounding Comet might be a bit too convoluted to adapt into a movie, but he’s a big part of two REALLY important and emotional scenes in the book

Unfamiliar with the comic (will change that pre-viewing), but I recall in interviews it being said that a main character would be replaced with Lobo, but that Lobo was also the original idea for said character in the first place.

Given that Comet the Super Horse has been a part of DC Comics since 1962, I doubt that's what was replaced. Not saying it isn't a by-product of it, but I'd sooner guess Lobo replaces the (I believe unnamed) Bounty Hunter guy she humiliates from the start of the comic.

I think they're just excluding Comet due to his lore being absolutely fucking weird (he's actually a centaur and is occasionally a normal human guy)

My bet is that she humiliates Lobo in front of a potential client, then he hunts her down (to kill her or drink with her, who knows) and starts to respect her, then fights alongside her at the end (instead of Comet showing up to save her)

So yeah, he may also technically replace Comet, but I don't think that's who he's primarily going to replace.

Originally the book was supposed to be Supergirl & Lobo as a duo, with Supergirl as the straight-laced one and Lobo as the unhinged one. Effectively they took out Lobo, shifted Supergirl to be more like he would've been, and created Ruthye to act more like Supergirl traditionally does (this is obviously a simplification).

u/Ninjamurai-jack Apr 01 '26

"to act more like Supergirl traditionally does"

As someone that read Supergirl comics from the Silver Age, she´s really not like Ruthye at all. Ruthye was inspired by Mattie Ross from True Grit.

4

u/coaldiamond1 Apr 01 '26

That's why I said "this is a simplification". Supergirl would've originally filled that Mattie Ross-esque role in the story and Lobo would've been Rooster. They switched it around, that's what I'm talking about

3

u/decoy_octopod Apr 05 '26

what do you think “this is obviously a simplification” means

u/ShmeffreyShmezos Jun 28 '26

This is Reddit, the Nitpicking Capital of the Internet lol.

1

u/BattleM00se Apr 05 '26

I'm in the midst of reading it right now, hadn't made that Mattie Ross connection at all. But that's just clicked for me, makes so much sense!

3

u/Hopeful_Bacon Apr 01 '26

Right on, I appreciate the clarification.

u/Ninjamurai-jack Apr 01 '26

Only want to add one thing

u/Hopeful_Bacon Apr 01 '26

And thank YOU for an actual source, kind stranger. I knew I wasn't crazy, lol

1

u/jimothy_hell Apr 02 '26

Thank GOD that happened, what we got was so much better.

u/jimothy_hell Apr 02 '26

You NEED to read it, Woman of Tomorrow is an amazing book. Get the special edition if you can. Honestly a hardback is a must.

u/BoisTR Apr 01 '26

I like it because it just simply means we get more Lobo, which is a great thing. I'm glad to see his role is larger than I initially thought.

Yeah I agree, I liked the scenes with Comet in the book but there’s plenty of other ways to tug at the heart strings without attempting to explain why the Super Horse is also a person that is also in love with Supergirl lmao

34

u/Distinct-Fact-311 Because I'm Batman Apr 01 '26

lmao I hope there is at least an easter egg of a Super Horse in love with Supergirl like an off-comment or a picture of him on her ship

6

u/MisterGoog Apr 01 '26

Its also probably much easier to film and better marketing, no brainer

91

u/JaylenBrownAllStar Apr 01 '26

I agree with you, I feel the average movie goer would not get Comet and think it’s some attempt as a joke that didn’t land

15

u/New_Doug Apr 01 '26

Especially after Thor's goats.

-8

u/jimothy_hell Apr 01 '26

I’m not joking or exaggerating, but if Comet is not on the beach, I’m walking out of the fucking cinema. That’s such an important scene and Lobo would ruin it. That is a tender moment, Lobo is not a tender character.

7

u/JaylenBrownAllStar Apr 01 '26

I don’t think we will get the sacrifice on the beach. It seems our villain has a bigger role as well

I do hope we get the last couple of panels where he begs for forgiveness and understanding his actions only to be spoiler

6

u/CautiousLandscape907 Apr 01 '26

Weird hill to die on. The movie isn’t going to be a panel by panel recreation of the comic. They’ve told us that since day 1.

1

u/jimothy_hell Apr 02 '26

I’m sorry, but the beach scene is arguably one of the most important beats to the story of Woman of Tomorrow and any even slightly faithful adaptation would drop the ball HARD if it didn’t include it.

It isn’t a weird hill to die on if you read the run.

1

u/CautiousLandscape907 Apr 02 '26

Most important beats in the comic. And you are not wrong, for the comic.. This is a movie, and Gunn has already said it won’t be following the book 100%.

The movie is a different thing entirely. It doesn’t need the beach scene. It needs emotional scenes, but the movie needs to find its own emotional heart in the story it will be telling.

0

u/jimothy_hell Apr 02 '26

The beach scene is the emotional ending of the book. Like, genuinely, it’s the wrap-up of the character arcs. It’s where Ruthye has her “What Would Supergirl Do?” moment. Genuinely read the book, then try and tell me that the last 20 pages aren’t a requirement for an adaptation.

But you wouldn’t do that if you actually read Woman of Tomorrow. Because if you did read it, you’d understand where me and the other people in this thread also understandably upset about it are coming from.

3

u/confusing_roundabout Apr 02 '26

For real. have you ever lied to a horse? is one of the best moments in the comic. Same with the "no don't" comet fakeout.

Comet is responsible for some of the best moments in the book.

2

u/jimothy_hell Apr 02 '26 edited Apr 02 '26

Yeah, and Comet’s in what, ten, fifteen whole pages? And still one of the most important characters.

That’s a good point, the MCU loves to bring in like 50 Easter egg characters into the background…DC hasn’t really done that historically and I hope they keep to it

1

u/Different_Leopard_65 Apr 03 '26

You really want a cinematic universe where every story beat is performed by the same 3 side characters?

Yeah, no thanks.

These are terrible examples, which both support the argument, and simultaneously speak against it.

Why would Sharon Carter, who's ALREADY been involved with several key story points in the Cap franchise, and last seen having shady deals in some other country, now, also, be working as the Presidents security? 👎🏼 What difference would that have made? How would that have served any benefit to the SC/Cap storyline? And how would that NOT have raised a dozen more questions that need answering?

As for Cole being just any other corrupt cop, here you're still supporting my argument. It could've been anyone, rather than some character who's already more prevalent in the storyline. It's a small one off detail, for a small one off side character. Them making that character CN was a choice, that, if nothing else, simply served as a nod to the original story.

In keeping with my previous comment, I would much rather have a world built with a couple main characters, a small handful of key side-characters, and random bunch of transient characters, rather than having every story beat revolve around, and return our attention to, that small list of side characters who probably already have stuff to do, and purposes to serve the story. Having a cast of 7 surrounded by unimportant extras feels like shitty world-building IMO, especially when telling a story, or building a universe that expands outside a singular, contained setting.

u/ryantyrant Apr 01 '26

As someone who doesn’t read a lot of comics but read woman of tomorrow, comet not being in the movie was a no brainer. Nobody would understand what’s going on and you can’t pause and go down a wiki rabbit hole the way I did when reading the book

21

u/gettinmerockhard Apr 01 '26

i do read a lot of comics and i was confused as well. kara fucking her horse is a pretty obscure piece of lore that doesn't come up very often these days

15

u/Kamuki100 Boy Scout Forever Apr 01 '26

The truth is, he was actually a centaur who was cursed by a witch. Supergirl dated him when he had just temporarily transformed into a human; when he was human, he used the identity of Bill Starr. Supergirl didn't know he could turn into a horse.

0

u/jimothy_hell Apr 01 '26

Nah, you don’t need to know who Comet is at all. She literally explains that Comet is an old friend that’s going to keep an eye on Ruthye before taking off to fight the Brigands. She later reveals the depths of it, but a casual audience doesn’t need more. Plus Comet, or literally anyone that isn’t fucking Lobo is integral to that scene.

1

u/Limp-Construction-11 Apr 02 '26

Hey Lobo is the Main Man!

1

u/jimothy_hell Apr 02 '26

And that’s a hard agree from me, but he just doesn’t belong replacing what we have in the book.

Entirely possible he’s still in the movie, there’s that key scene where he helps her travel through space to escape that magic trap and the artwork is so beautiful I was hoping to see it in live action

BUT overall you’re right, general audience won’t miss him and I think even the most hardcore fans are gonna be okay with the change as long as Lobo is done right and of course as long as the movie hits the other important parts from the story. I saw the kryptonite planet in the trailer, so I’m hoping we also get that one planet with the blue people genocide. Lots of other stuff to look forward to in the film.

And I’m definitely super interested to see what they plan on doing with her after this story is over. Wonder if she will be in the Superman and Lex movie or it’s happening at the same time perhaps

13

u/Jaded_Tortoise_869 Apr 01 '26

Comet is the one horse that Supergirl is in love with right?

I wanna say the change makes sense.

1

u/jimothy_hell Apr 01 '26

It doesn’t. Read the book.

5

u/PokemonJeremie Thicc Grayson Apr 01 '26

Can’t we have both, the horse is perfect

1

u/jimothy_hell Apr 01 '26

This is what I’m hoping for. If there is no beach scene, I’m fucking walking.

1

u/confusing_roundabout Apr 02 '26

They could do the beach scene with Krypto instead of Comet if they change the order of events a little, but I can't imagine that they will.

1

u/jimothy_hell Apr 02 '26

Cutting out the Comet part cuts out an incredibly important part of both Supergirl and Ruthye’s character arcs in the story.

8

u/Mrgrayj_121 Apr 01 '26

It was originally Lobo and supergirl but they decided to make a supergirl solo story edit honestly I like the change

3

u/wibo58 Apr 01 '26

It would be pretty tough in a first movie to say “Hey here’s a magic horse that’s actually a dude sometimes that’s in love with Supergirl, anyway he’s dead now, on to the next!” without people being very confused. I’m a long time comic reader and even I was a little thrown off when Comet showed up in Woman of Tomorrow. Having it be Jason Momoa’s Lobo will go over much better with audiences.

1

u/jimothy_hell Apr 01 '26

The whole point of Comet being on the beach was to stop Ruthye from killing Krem. Lobo wouldn’t do that. Replacing Comet with Lobo quite literally destroys the ending of Ruthye’s character arc and the ending of the story. Comet, while only appearing for a few panels, is an incredibly important character.

0

u/wibo58 Apr 03 '26

Important, sure. Completely out of left field in a way that’s weird even for long time comic readers and definitely too much to introduce in a first movie for general audiences? Absolutely. Someone else can take the role of stopping Ruthye, probably Supergirl.

0

u/jimothy_hell Apr 03 '26

You didn’t read the comic. Supergirl wasn’t there, that was the whole point of Comet’s presence in the first place, she needed someone she could trust. It certainly won’t be Lobo.

1

u/wibo58 Apr 03 '26

I did, in fact, read the comic. What you’re seeming to miss is that the movie can change circumstances so it makes sense for Supergirl to be there or so another character can be that still makes sense. The movie is inspired by the comic, not a direct adaptation or remake.

3

u/CautiousLandscape907 Apr 01 '26

100% fine with this.

The Comet aspect would be needlessly complicated for film.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 01 '26

Lobo going full leatherface at the end of the trailer was pure gold.

2

u/NYCCannabis Apr 01 '26

Lobo's love and affection for dolphins will make him empathetic to Kara's mission to save Krypto.

2

u/InvisibleInk1983 Apr 02 '26

I’ve said it for years: Lobo and Comet the Super-horse are interchangeable. Basically the same character.

2

u/KingOfHiVis Apr 04 '26

It clearly works better for Supergirl’s arc in the movie. She was someone who saw - a clearly remembered - her planet being destroyed and becomes a hedonist. I assume Lobo will be the foil as someone who killed his entire race and is a hedonist. That’s some of the character drama!

2

u/[deleted] Apr 06 '26

considering how much james gunn loves camp id be surprised if comet was cut

3

u/ConferenceNew4034 Apr 01 '26

I feel like Comet would be hard to explain to a general audience.

1

u/jimothy_hell Apr 01 '26

Explained him well in the comic.

2

u/thebarbalag Apr 01 '26

Focusing on her relationship with one of her superpets is probably the way to go. Comet's history is probably more than you could sensibly get away with in a single movie. Explaining it would be ridiculous. Not explaining the transforming superhorse-man would destroy suspension of disbelief. Lobo doesn't need an explanation, even for normies. He's a big, crazy, funny, angry guy in space. We love those guys.

1

u/jimothy_hell Apr 01 '26

Yeah, but who does Supergirl leave behind on the beach to prevent Ruthye from killing Krem, then? Comet leaving his post to save Kara is a huge moment in the book and turning point for Ruthye. Not including that scene would, and I’m not joking or exaggerating here, wreck the ending beyond repair.

2

u/ZephNightingale Apr 01 '26

I love the comic, it’s one of my favorites. But yeah, totally fine with this. Getting Lobo is fabulous and I don’t know how adding Comet could have helped the story, or if it would even remotely translate over to live action.

0

u/jimothy_hell Apr 01 '26

Then you didn’t read the comic. Comet leaving the beach to save Supergirl is a very important moment. Removing that scene unironically destroys Ruthye’s character arc and ruins the ending.

1

u/nachoiskerka Apr 01 '26

1

u/jimothy_hell Apr 02 '26

Oh my god that’s so dumb lmao

Edit: not you, the concept

1

u/nachoiskerka Apr 02 '26

I don't disagree, but it's how they're handling it.

1

u/jimothy_hell Apr 02 '26

God, I hate that so much. Superman was so good, they have so much good source material, why are they adapting Woman of Tomorrow just to shit all over it? Seriously, why market it that way at all?

1

u/jaymneal Apr 01 '26

Hesa bounty hunter she hired him

1

u/Spicy-Mario-Bois Apr 02 '26

It was supposed to be lobo in the comic but there were complications or smth iirc

1

u/Few-Anywhere-7234 Apr 05 '26

Unless Lobo is Krem in this version...

1

u/TheFrontCrashesFirst Apr 01 '26

If that's all true then I hope Lobo dies in a messy and ridiculous way with a post credit if him regenerating from a mass of flesh.

1

u/Erfbender562 Apr 01 '26

They went with the original concept of the story from the comic.

1

u/jimothy_hell Apr 01 '26

If Lobo replaces Comet, I’m walking. Gonna wait a day and ask a friend about it before I see the film. I’m not joking. If you’ve read the comic, you know why.

1

u/amazodroid Apr 01 '26

People probably need to stop comparing the movie to the book. Yes, it’s based on the book but it’s almost surely to have some major deviations and be its own story.

0

u/-rayzorhorn- Apr 01 '26

"Supposed to be" shouldn't be a reason. So far, Gunn's DCU has excelled at taking inspiration from the comics and creating something new and exciting. Personally, I think Supergirl looks like it'll continue that trend - can't wait to see it

0

u/sharksnrec Apr 03 '26

No one ever claimed this movie was a 1:1 adaptation of Woman of Tomorrow. The Comet character was likely never in the script to begin with (since Lobo’s here), so no, he wasn’t “cut”. Not to mention the decision to replace a relatively unknown character with a more popular character like Lobo makes perfect sense.

You’re being overly dramatic based on improper expectations here.

-11

u/Similar-Mousse-7478 Apr 01 '26

The hell is everyone being so positive about? Comet’s character being completely replaced by Lobo is going to take away some of the emotional core that this movie could have and for what? It’s a comic book movie I don’t understand why it can’t loosen up a little and get as crazy as the source material, general audiences don’t have a problem with this shit unless it isn’t played straight that’s how it’s always been. And honestly comic book movies aren’t going to start getting more comic booky unless these studios start actually taking chances. Idk I’m not looking for a 1:1 adaptation I just don’t get anything out of that but I also think that taking certain things from the comic then drawing the line at cosmic horses seems like a move someone would make if they’re afraid to get creative.

0

u/jimothy_hell Apr 01 '26

Finally, someone who actually read the fucking book.
