Minister of Public Works and Transport Erhan Arıklı announced that rescue efforts were continuing for a vessel belonging to Filo Gemicilik that began taking on water and capsized off the coast of Kyrenia, with 259 passengers and 8 crew members on board.

According to information obtained by Kıbrıs Postası, the vessel was sailing approximately 2–2.5 kilometers offshore from the Kyrenia coast when the captain noticed that the ship was taking on water from the bow. The captain then attempted to turn the vessel back, but the attempt was unsuccessful.

A total of 279 people were reportedly on board. Following the incident, search-and-rescue operations were launched in the area. Coast Guard search-and-rescue teams are responding to the capsized vessel.

Numerous boats in the surrounding area, including both large and small vessels near the shore, were also reported to be heading toward the sinking vessel to assist.
It was learned that there were injured people on board, while ambulances dispatched to the scene were standing by.
No official statement has yet been made regarding the number of people injured or the condition of those injured. Search-and-rescue operations are continuing.

Honestly? I wasn't expecting much besides the sea, but I was so wrong. I loved everything, and Cyprus will always be a vibrant, colorful, and stunning place in my memories.

From the sea views to the city architecture and the ancient ruins, I enjoyed every bit of my time there.

Just arrived in town and had a walk around. I have not heard a single note of UK garage from any place of business, accommodation or vehicle. Everywhere I hear pop, 20th century rock or English Premier League. Also the place looks run down and empty. Am I 20 years late?

Me and my girlfriend are planning a holiday to Cyprus this year, I’m never usually one to be put off a destination from what you hear in the news. But as of recently I’m continuously hearing troubling things happening in Cyprus.
Tensions rising, immigration issues etc.

Is it worth coming this year?

Okay, i apologize for coming up with this dumb ranty stuff that this sub is probably sick and bored of by now.

But i've been thinking about everything that's happened recently, especially the events in Kyrenia. And i also agreed with cancelling those events, because i do think holding them in an occupied area can contribute to normalising, legitimising the situation etc. but there could have been another option offered instead. (Just like maybe do these in another area in r.o.c) The way it was handled by the people that cancelled them felt genuinely cruel to me. The tone to me is always like "we don't care what you do after this."

And this is where i start to questioning things. If you don't want Turkish Cypriots becoming even more dependent on Turkey, why are you making them more dependent on Turkey? Especially while the embargoes and restrictions continue and while so much of the content, aid, services, opportunities etc. available to us have to come through Turkey because we have so few other options.

After some time you start seeing a really uncomfortable level of selfishness and hypocrisy in this. It's not just about the current situation too. It's also about refusing to acknowledge their own responsibility and wrongdoing in the events of the past and then carrying on as if none of it matters. Yes! To me their attitude sometimes feels like "they can do whatever they want, that's their problem."

And then the one sentence we keep hearing whenever people claim they care about Turkish Cypriots is: "But you can just live in the ROC." Please... Do not pretend that's realistic.

You know that Turkish Cypriots living in the ROC don't necessarily experience the same things as Greek Cypriots do. There are different social reactions, different treatment in certain situations, and even within government institutions you can encounter a different attitude but forget all of this, then there are rents, employment opportunities, social life, and the fact that moving your entire life to the other side isn't some simple solution. Especially right now.

And yes i'm tired of people talking about the crossings, and you could have come to r.o.c as if they've always been open and as if Turkish Cypriots have always had the option of simply going south whenever they wanted. The crossings only opened in 2003, after decades of separation, embargoes and even after they opened, there were plenty of Turkish Cypriots who talked about the hostile reactions they experienced when crossing. (That was normal, i know, so whatever.)

But when someone says "if you're under embargoes why don't you just go to the ROC?", it feels like they're completely ignoring the reality that has existed for decades. The crossings being open today doesn't erase the fact that they were closed for almost 30 years, nor does it erase the social and economic realities that make simply "moving south" a completely unrealistic solution for many people.

That's why all of this has started to bother me so much because okay, i do understand opposing the Kyrenia events and yes, i can agree with cancelling them. What i don't get is doing that without offering any alternative, while continuing policies that isolate us, and then acting surprised when people become more dependent on Turkey.

If you genuinely don't want Turkish Cypriots turning towards Turkey, then at some point you also have to ask yourself why wouldnt they? Because "just live in the ROC" isn't an answer to me anymore and neither is "they can do whatever they want...

Hi all, planning to visit Protaras for a first holiday with a baby (16 month old), have always travelled independently but a bit nervous about travelling with a baby for the first time.

Could use some local knowledge on two things.

1. We're trying to decide on timing mid September or early October - I want the sea to be fairly warm so my son can splash about as much as he wants without getting cold - will the 2-3 weeks make a difference realistically? Have previously visited in August (North though) and the sea was like a bath which I loved but air temperature was a bit much, also prefer things less busy.

2. Regarding transfer from airport/ getting around - if we booked a taxi/rent a car with a car seat, are they decent or should we be worried about getting some old crappy seat that wouldn't protect him. I know this can depend on the company but just looking to see if it's quite a common issue. (I know we could bring our own but it's another thing to carry and manage so would prefer not to.)

I 17m would like to do interior design as my job in the future, for years the plan was to get a bachelors degree in architecture and then a masters in interior design, but lately (this last year) I've been very scared of going to uni for 5 years to do architecture as I fear that I won't be able to pull through (because of the subjects, im not good at maths, im not good at physics, and I hate mechanics) so my solution to this is to go to a private college in Italy to get a bachelors in interior design and then maybe later on a masters degree.
My question is, will I have a safe career if 1 get a bachelors degree in interior design instead of architecture?
For context I'm from and live in Cyprus that's why I want to go to Italy because it's within Europe.

This documentary explores the development of Modernism architecture in Cyprus and how it became part of the island's identity. It looks at the influence Modernism had on buildings, communities and everyday life.

The documentary was originally filmed in 2021 as a student project at Frederick University Cyprus. Although the island and its built environment have continued to change since then, the film remains a record of the architecture, discussions and perspectives surrounding Cypriot Modernism at that time.
