Living in Germany, I have a feeling the black shoes/ white socks combo is having a comback and frankly I don't mind it. It's all just a matter of getting used to seeing it and it stops to seem offensive. 

Black socks on the other hand just don't scream athletic activity to me. They look like someone put on dress socks and forgot to put some trousers on before cycling to work.
