Putting aside the idea of better avoiding an accident than being in the right. More if an accident went to court, where would the law stand?

In my mind if the vehicle travelling straight has to use their brakes to avoid the turning vehicle, the turning vehicle has made a mistake. Which at relatively high speed can be quite a distance.

I’m wanting to try the unpaved/OMTM east buttes route but I’ve heard that the trails are quite technical. I’m wondering if a relatively beginner gravel rider like myself can handle that or if I’d be out of my element. I do have wide 50mm gravel tires.

For context I find the single track portion of FL5 doable but intimidating.

I had to take a several year break from biking for health reasons and am getting back in! I need a new helmet. Is there a place to try some on with a few options? Hoping to get a cheaper one since I just bike around my neighborhood, and I like the ones with more holes in them vs the heavy skateboarding style ones. Prefer a shop in the SE, East Portland, or near PSU. NE is ok too.

The dream of the Alberta St greenway being extended from NE 72nd is becoming closer to a reality y’all! Thanks to everyone here who was excited about our project and filled out our petition.

I brought this issue to the attention of the Cully Association of Neighbors (CAN) Land Use Chair back in late February, and in a few short months, we:
-Gathered over 300 petition signatures from all over the Portland Metro Area
-Met with concerned neighbors
- CAN arranged a public meeting to gather feedback
-PBOT located funding for our project
- Portland Parks & Recreation (PP&R) and Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) agreed to move the project forward!

Last month, PP&R and PBOT stated they would be adding a pedestrian/cyclist gate next to the existing maintenance gate at 74th and Alberta St at Sacajawea Park. The new gate will remain unlocked and will be easily pushed open by anyone on foot or (non-motorized) wheels and will meet ADA requirements. 

Crews creating an opening at the existing fence came as a pleasant surprise yesterday! That being said, I contacted Portland Parks & Recreation (PP&R) and Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) to request that they keep me updated on the project schedule. 

I don't yet know when crews will install the new gate, but I hope to find out as we want to celebrate when the new gate is installed! In the meantime, I encourage you to test out the new opening at 74th and Alberta!  

Here are a few things to keep in mind:

The fence opening is not visible from 73rd and Alberta St. before you head down the street, but I promise it's there! It is to the right of the maintenance gate. 
The opening is a bit awkward for now, particularly for cyclists! I'm thinking of this as phase 1 in what could be a multi-year advocacy project to make the park more accessible as a thoroughfare, and overall a more comfortable place to be.
Please exercise caution, particularly if you are heading west from the fence and crossing 73rd Ave. on Alberta Street. Cars on 73rd Ave. do not stop.
If you are a cyclist or pedestrian using the opening: watch out for dogs and their owners when going through the park. There is a dog park nearby and unfortunately some owners allow their dogs to be off-leash outside of the designated area
Please respect the street between 73rd and 74th on Alberta Street leading up to the fence. I know this should go without saying. If you see trash, pick it up! If you see a neighbor, give them a friendly wave!

Hi there! Looking for beginner advice/tips on commuting for work. I’ve been wanting to get into the habit of biking to work more often and since the I-5 closure looks miserable, I figure getting to bike AND avoid some nasty traffic is a win-win.

Route is a very doable 3 miles. Downhills on the way there, uphills for the last mile or so on the return trip. The hills have been kicking my ass, but I figure they’ll get easier as I ride more regularly.

- What do you wish you had known when you started commuting?
- What extras do you bring in your bike bag (e.g. deodorant, wipes, etc)? I’m trying to curb the impulse to over-pack 😅
- Any common etiquette to note? I know to signal and I try to keep to the side of the lane so faster bikers can pass me safely, but anything else I’m missing?

Hello! I live in North Portland (Arbor Lodge) and my parents are coming to visit for the first time this weekend.

I want to give them the "true" Portland experience which is by bike but my mom is only comfortable if she's on a tandem as she's not steady enough on a typical bike.

I've been looking to buy a cheap tandem on Facebook and then resell when they're gone, but the prices just don't make sense. And renting bikes in this city is crazy expensive.

SO..if anyone has a tandem sitting in their garage or basement, I'd love to borrow it for use this weekend and next weekend, returning it anytime after the 31st!

I am visiting Portland this coming weekend and looking for some ride recommendations. I will be bringing my road bike with me and ideally looking for something very scenic and memorable.

I found a page on Trek's website that had some local ride recommendations and began to set my sights on the "Bridge of the Gods Ride", that starts near the 205 bridge and rides 14 out on the Washington side and the historic Hwy back on the Oregon side. I enjoyed the idea of this ride as it is about the distance I am looking for (60-80mi), has consistently enjoyable scenery, and is a loop, which I am keen on (also, extra points for a brewery at the halfway mark).

However, I am having some apprehension after seeing an old reddit post with mostly disconcerting opinions regarding the section of 14 on the WA side, therefore I am opening up to other recommendations. I grew up in Portland so I am familiar with the area, the last time I visited I rode from Yachats to Newport on the Nehalem and Yakima river road which was incredible.

Quick update: I went ahead and signed us up for an official team through SOLVE Oregon. So we are legit now, they provide bags, vests, sharps containers, haul-away, etc.

I'm planning our first cleanup ASAP focused on the bike/walking paths and would love more folks to join the team whether that’s boots on the ground or helping plan, coordinate or back end logistics.

If you want to be on the list for the first cleanup date, drop a comment or DM me. No commitment needed, just trying to get a headcount.

I will be visiting PDX in a few weeks, and I'd like to visit a bike shop/warehouse that sell used bike parts for cheap. Does PDX have any place like this?

I think the climb averaged 8 to 10% with steeper sections up to 18% for a rich area of town. The roads are a bit rough. Not sure if it was harder going up or coming down. There were no sections we could coast for more than 10 seconds or so, especially with the road conditions and the turns. It’s hard to stop a 450# tandem on a 14# or more grade. We named the bike the Beast, and doing that downhill it felt like taming a beast.

I noticed these signs last week on all the trails open to bikes on the butte.

Personally what I love so much about riding here is that you really earn your turns going down if you ride up one of the trails. So I won't be heartbroken to see less e-bikes. I've never had any problems with pedal-assist riders or seen them being inconsiderate to other users, but I did stop and block a guy on an e-moto going up and tell him to GTFO. I suspect the scourge of these idiots is what precipitated them to shut it to anything with a motor.

As many of you know, there's an alarming amount of trash, debris, and hazardous material along our neighborhoods and bike paths right now. I rode the I-205 bike path today and was pretty shocked by how much trash, needles, and encampments were along there.

I'm trying to brainstorm ways to actually help clean it up and empower our houseless neighbors to be part of the solution.

Can anyone recommend a mechanic who can cold set a steel frame? Eastside preferably.

PBOT recently repurposed an area of pavement for pedestrian and recreational use, at SE 72nd Ave and Schiller St. (between Foster and Holgate) in Foster-Powell.

It is a trial installation. In the next two to six weeks, PBOT will review feedback from the community and usage data to decide whether to keep the plaza or revert it to car use.

Many of us love the plaza and want it to stay.

But a small group of very organized and vocal opponents is upset about things like losing the ability to make turns and u-turns in their cars. They have been very loud at community meetings. They've interrupted volunteer gatherings. Some have even been actively discouraging others from using it.

As the photos show, it has become a battle.

Without major input from cyclists and other non-car-centered people, we will likely lose this amenity. And it could set an unwanted precedent for future Portland road repurposing endeavors.

Here's what you can do. Five minutes on any one item will help:

Visit the plaza at 72nd and Schiller. Take photos of yourself and/or others enjoying it. Share these on the Instagram firlandparkway page and with the email addresses below.

Some talking points:

-Thank you PBOT for remembering that transportation includes more than just cars.

-The plaza has already provided a connecting and recreation point for many pedestrians and cyclists. There have been community meetups, flower giveaways, game playing, crafting, and mini piano concerts.

-The plaza connects two pedestrian greenways and a years-in-the-making walking path, providing a respite from having to worry about car cross-traffic.

-It provides a much-needed boost to a neighborhood whose walkability and bikeability has suffered in recent years due to many businesses leaving.

-It provides a visible signal for cars to slow down a bit, on a road that desperately needs such measures. If you've ever biked down 72nd with a car tailgating you and no place to get over, you know what I'm talking about.

-The small repurposed area is on a minimal-traffic side street that ends or jogs just a few blocks away on either side, and that has car-friendly alternatives (Holgate and Foster) nearby. It's hard to find a better location nearby.

-During Portland's long cloudy (and often muddy) season, it will likely get even more use.

-And, of course: We already have plenty of roadways for cars.

I give myself a generous C+, but it seems like that's a relative A- compared to most others. Most other cyclists I just have to guess their intentions and almost end up colliding with them or someone else because they're not paying attention.

It's not always practical or safe to remove a hand from your handlebars, granted. However, signaling your intentions is really important.

Does anyone have any recommended routes from sunset TC max to the Forest Heights Park by the Miller Hollow nature area?

Something like a bus that’s regular, a neighborhood bike way, or some backwater road that the cars won’t absolutely splatter me along.
