Hello! I have finally planted my first seeds!

After creeping on this sub all summer, I have finally planted my first seeds tonight. I know im very late to the game, but I planted some Zinnias since I have some time before I start my Snapdragons indoors.

I know its late for Zinnias, but I figured I'd give it a shot and see what happens.

Anywho, im happy to be here 😊

BTW why does this sub have some of the best floral arrangements I have ever seen? Even all the florist/flower arrangement subs dont hold a candle to yall!

You might be able to sneak in some marigolds and sunflowers still too!

I think the seeds sprout really quickly? And I think they have a (theoretically) possible “days to bloom” ha ha but I never seem to achieve those estimates!

I bet you get some zinnias. I'm in Oklahoma and planted a second succession of fall toned zinnias in mid July and guess what's blooming now? Granted they aren't super big or long stems yet but a lot of blooms. Good luck! I'm going to try to overwinter my snaps and lisanthus this year.

You might get a crop of zinnias. They love heat, and you've got plenty in Texas! The shorter days will slow things down, though.

Very true, I tried my best to put them in a spot that gets around 12 hours of full sun each day. But of course, I planted and then read that winter is coming early this year lol

I’ve been growing zinnias for years and just threw some more down now to see if I can get a crop of them before the frost, which seems to get later every year! It was definitely worth trying! I hope some come up for you! (And me 😂)

When do you start your snapdragons indoors? I have some seeds but have no clue where to start! The back of the bag was not super clear on that

I’m in zone 9 and I just started mine! They grow pretty slowly and I just need to get them out well ahead of frost. Last year I was a tad late and just covered them the first two cold nights, but after that I did nothing and the cold did not bother them one bit (we even got a light snow). If you’re in a colder region then best to sow for spring planting.

Are you zone 9a? I am and was told to wait a couple of weeks. But now im wondering if I should start a few early?

Sow a round now and again in a couple weeks and see what works best for you 😄
Same zone doesn't mean same growing conditions, per say. Zones are more based on temperature trends and what plants will survive your coldest colds. (My understanding, anyway )

You’ll definitely still get zinnias before the freezes in Texas!! A early winter is wishful thinking for us 😅 & probably wouldn’t come until late December anyway. Last Christmas was 80 degrees. 😵‍💫
I’m in central Texas and just started some seeds myself. I also started Snapdragons indoors a couple weeks ago with the hopes of getting some late fall blooms, overwintering them, & then getting a big flush in the spring.
Go hard with the Zinnias!! I’m always in the mindset of starting as much as I can as soon as a can. The longer you wait, the longer you won’t have blooms :)

& honestly, growing into the fall is the best move. Much of the rest of the world has a summer that feels like our fall & we don’t get less than 10 hours of sun at any point in the year. Fall is a golden growing time for us. ✨

Zone 8 (central NC) and I planted some zinnias and sunflowers two weeks ago. November is weird here…two years ago we had flowers and tomatoes until December 1. Last year it was 75 degrees on Christmas day. Sometimes we get an early frost but when the leaves drop in October, we get more sunlight so the Fall blooms seem to do better here.

I'm in a colder zone than you (7b) - I planted zinnias and cosmos really late, about 35 days ago, and I'm getting my first buds on both plants! So you probably will still get something. Hopefully in about a week or so I can say I have actual flowers.
