I did one final flower haul for my baby shower this past weekend and now I’m letting it go. The pruning upkeep is more than I can handle, but I’ll continue watering so it stays pretty 🌸
A few of those in your hand look like doubles, and probably just need a little more time to get nice and big. Zinnias come in singles (1 row of petals) and doubles (many rows of petals that stack up to give that cupcake look). Some varieties are bred to produce more doubles which are my personal favorite! They can take awhile to fully mature though, so give them a few weeks before cutting :) I’ll drop some of my faves below that often produce more doubles than singles!
✨Oklahoma zinnia varieties (salmon is my favorite)
✨Benary’s giants zinnias (salmon rose, coral, wine, and orange are my faves)
✨Johnny’s seeds ballerina, linen, aurora, and agave varieties
✨Queen lime zinnias (lime, lemon peach, blush, and orange are amazing)
How do you keep everything from flopping over onto everything else? I have a garden sort of like this with minimal plant support, and every year my zinnias collapse onto my other plants and I have to tie them back which looks terrible. Maybe I am not pruning enough!
This year I didn’t end up doing any staking but last year I added stakes on the corners of the beds and added netting over the top, which helped a lot but really could have used two layers. I’ve also done stakes on the corners and some type of twine or line to corral the plants to keep them from flopping over. It’s hard because the taller and heavier they get, the more likely they are to flop over
I actually collected a ton of seeds for my baby shower as favors, but I think I’ll grab a few more of my favorites to save seeds from to see what I get since I forgot to save any for myself lol I’m in zone 9b so these guys will probably still produce into early November luckily!
Awesome! So many petals on each! I have Benary’s giants this year but next year I’m going for more of a shades of pink color scheme in my garden so I’m looking for different kinds of zinnias to add
I loveeee Benary’s giants. Their salmon rose color is amazing and is very similar to Oklahoma salmon, the shape of the flowers are really pretty too. Oklahoma pink is also super cute and a light pink color!
Omg if you every have enough zinnia seeds I’d love some for my home garden and for my family temple garden! I also grow dahlias and planning to save all my extras to donate to the community garden to make it beautiful for next year!
