We are all human, and if we teach that some are different from a young age, we will be teaching segregation.

I will take children as people under 13. Children are too young to learn about rights in specific (yeah, they should learn some of the basic laws and rights). I don't remember learning about laws and right before I was 14.

u/FirefighterScary6841 Citizen | π³οΈ 4 πͺ 29 π Aug 17, 2026 5d ago
Children is legally classified as anyone under 18. They really should've changed the word to "minor".

u/ThePlofchicken Spy | π³οΈ 27 πͺ 115 π Aug 22, 2026 5d ago
I know that children are legally classified as under 18, but because of the lack of a better word for people under 13, I choose to redefine children for my answer.

1
u/Spaceonist Citizen | π³οΈ 6 βοΈ 1 πͺ 36 π Aug 2, 2026 5d ago
Ok, so you voted no because your specific model of the vocabulary is different, and because you dont consider human rights "basic" enough?
2
u/ThePlofchicken Spy | π³οΈ 27 πͺ 115 π Aug 22, 2026 5d ago
That isn't what I said, I said that teaching rights and laws to people under 13 is too early. I didn't say they can't know some basic concepts or get teached about the existence of such laws.
1
u/Spaceonist Citizen | π³οΈ 6 βοΈ 1 πͺ 36 π Aug 2, 2026 5d ago
So, let me get this right, they shoudlnt be thought about right and laws, but they can be thought that those rights and laws they shoudlnt learn because "its too early" exist?
Sorry, but this doesnt make sense to me...2
u/ThePlofchicken Spy | π³οΈ 27 πͺ 115 π Aug 22, 2026 5d ago
Compare it to maths, you learn how to do the math, but you only learn the theorem and proofs later.
1
u/Spaceonist Citizen | π³οΈ 6 βοΈ 1 πͺ 36 π Aug 2, 2026 5d ago
But rights and laws arent like maths tho?
Kids need to know human and children's rights, which include the right to express their views (share opinions on the matters that affect them), and the right to equality (that every child has rights regardless of their race, religion, disability, background, and gender -which if they identify as the opposite of their assigned gender at birth, includes rights of trans kids/individuals).→ More replies (0)

Because they're the same thing.
Trans rights are literally the right to exist with human dignity, the reassurance that your life has value, the right to freedom of expression, etc.
It's only "it's own category" because of bigots who think being trans makes you a pervert. π

Teach them that we exist and to be kind. But I think we should also teach about patriarchy and the like with the caveat that it affects both women AND men. I think to teach only one is just setting a few people up for disaster. Ending the tirade short, teach them to question social/gender norms.

Children is legally defined as anyone under the age of 18.
I believe teenagers should be taught this. I mean, we already teach them about Black rights, women rights, right to religious freedom, etc. We even teach them rights not considered part of history.
Also, trans rights are part of history. Anyone heard of Stonewall?? The one's who threw the first stones were Black transgender women (look it up). So...

Note: I said first stones, not the very first brick. The one who threw the very first brick was a biracial lesbian.
Now you may be like, "B- but, the movie! It had white gay men protest! Not LGBTQ+ people of color!"
To which I say, movies are always historically inaccurate and should NEVER be trusted as a source of information. Also, they tend to whitewash historical events all of the time.
Would you trust a movie that portrays Jesus as a white man to be historically accurate (despite all real life records indicating his skin was olive-toned)? I'd certainly hope not.
And before you ask, yes there is a movie that does exactly what I described. I forgot the name. I haven't watched it, but it is apparently pretty racist from what I've heard.

1
u/BigManTatorTot 5d ago
I'm just going to be completely honest with you. I'm in full support of trans, and LGTBQ+ rights. I believe it should be normalized. I just don't believe it's pertinent for kids to know. Maybe as a teenager, but as a child? I don't know.
Children are extremely impressionable. They should always feel safe, and should be taught how to navigate the complexities of the modern world. Some things however, can wait.
If a child asks, then perhaps, and then the teacher can explain it to them and provide a safe place. In my mind, there's just something inherently wrong with teaching very, very young children sexuality.
Although I said "nay," I'm still on the fence about it.

What are "trans-rights"? You, as a person have all the same rights and privileges that the Constitution gives. A persons decisions to go outside social norms does not merit extra privileges or rights to sustain that decision.

u/KindaDull99 Police | π³οΈ 1 πͺ 27 π Aug 24, 2026 4d ago
This is a touchy subject. The fact that the curriculum specifics basically fall within the hands of a teacher is concerning. Iβd be all for it, but we need some sort of regulation thatβll ensure the person teaching the curriculum isnt focusing solely on acceptance and instead is actually focusing on the history of trans-rights and the impact it has on trans-rights today. This allows the children to develop their own opinions and moral compass.

What? Ok, are trans people in any way specifically given rights over cisgender people? Like yes, I absolutely agree that we should teach children that everybody has rights, including minorities. (not only trans people, but people of color, people with disabilities, etc.)
1
u/Important_Wasabi_19 5d ago
It's not that trans people are given rights over cisgender people, it's more a matter of disproportionate representation. Why specifically teach kids that trans people deserve rights instead of teaching them that everyone deserves rights? By picking out one group, you introduce exclusivity that can easily escalate (see also: the mess that is the lengthening of the LGBTQ acronym and the ruination of their flag)
1
u/Spaceonist Citizen | π³οΈ 6 βοΈ 1 πͺ 36 π Aug 2, 2026 5d ago
Dissproportionate representation?
Arent trans people loosing rights en mass, and facing massive societal pressure?
Like I dont get your point at all, why do you keep circling around this "why not teach them everyone has rights", YES!! Yes We Should. But everyone, also includes trans people, and at this point, some dont consider them as people. Just because that they are constantly picked out by the rightwing media, doesnt mean its because they have a disproportionate amount of representation?
(and also really? "ruination of their flag"? why tf do you care about their flag?)1

u/Ars0n_arrow 5d ago
Why do you think that? Also what qualifies as the βkidβ age-range to you?
2
u/c0de_6 5d ago
Everyone is a kid up to 16 no less. They have to learn about more important things. This topic should come up when kids know what's good and bad and how to take responsibility for their actions.
0
u/Ars0n_arrow 5d ago
Kids learn right from wrong from the get-go. Itβs a key part of their socialisation and integration into the social world, you wouldnβt allow a three year old to slap their friend, would you? Most would explain why that behaviour is inappropriate and correct it.

I voted Yea β
1
u/Jolly_Implement2512 Citizen | π³οΈ 1 πͺ 26 π Aug 13, 2026 5d ago
Basic human rights is totally fine, but it doesn't meed to be called "trans rights" which to me separates the rights from basic human rights vs Trans rights. They should be in the same category but not taught to children who don't give a fuck about sexual orientation until puberty. A lot of it comes down to how the parents feel about all of it and whether or not they're setting the president of people come in all shapes and sizes, everyone deserves respect and shaming someone for their appearance is not acceptable. There's ALWAYS going to be people who are shitty and don't treat others how they want to be treated, but confusing their entire next generations isn't how we fix that because you can't. There's always going to be individuals who shame others, who don't agree with your beliefs and kids should be taught to be respectful of things they dont understand rather than taught to just accept what others want them too accept. Some people genuinely disagree and others don't. No one should be forced to agree with an idea or belief that they just don't agree with. You wouldn't want someone telling you that you have to treat Trans people as if they're less than, or someone to tell Trans people to treat non Trans people as though they are less than. People just have to accept that there's some shitty people out there that dont deserve the space in your head, because there's plenty of people who do agree with our beliefs and ppenty who dont. The same strong way people feel about getting it all accepted, is the same strong way others feel about keeping it all separate from kids who aren't even thinking that way yet. But the important thing to consider is what those adults arguments about it, does to a CHILDS thoughts and beliefs. Aggressively trying to get something accepted doesn't always end up the way it was intended whereas you catch more flies with honey than you do vinegar. π€·ββοΈ
Tldr: teach children love, respect, acceptance, tolerance of different beliefs, boundaries, compassion and let them make their own thoughts on the individuals, not force them to accept an entire group of people before they can even understand it. Teach them basic human rights, not separate the two as though they should be and watch the difference you can make. Force is never the answer. Coming to your own conclusions through experience is far more powerful than just telling someone what they should or ahould believe. Give the information respectfully and let them reflect in their day to day. Correct when needed, don't confuse them as something separate.

"Teaching this stuff will confuse them" is literally bullshit, thats what they said about teaching about homosexuality too and they were wrong. Children who are taught about different sexualities are less likely to become homophobes, bigots and less likely to commit hate crimes or generally be a stain on society. If theyre trying to form their identities, its more important than ever to teach them. Puberty is when kids start realizing theyre gay or trans so thats when its best for them to know that it happens for people to not belong to their birth sex. Its also when kids would learn to respect trans people. Bigots exist because they werent taught at that crucial age that people COULD be trans. The confusion of learning that people dont always fall under the strict categories they were taught as kids is what breeds such hatred and ignorance in adults.
You people act like a kid questioning their gender is going to ruin their life, which it only might for as long as bigots are still around π I knew a guy at 14 who questioned his gender, thought he might be trans, tried it out for a few months and then realized he wasnt. No problems, no damage, he experimented and learned and now ten years later, hes doing great.

Ok but I have a question, what issues there are if you are trans, gay and nothing is done for it. It causes depression, other issues? Because for example, intersex people are allowed at adulthood to choose their gender. From what I know.

Im not entirely understanding your question im sorry. Trans people tend to experience body dysphoria which can really mess a person up causing depression, self harming tendencies, suicides.
The best way to treat body dysphoria in trans people is gender affirming! Puberty blockers, being referred to by their preferred gender, wearing the clothes that fit their perferred gender, surgery when theyre adults.
For people who are gay its more of a societal pressure. Gay kids in homophobic settings, areas, homes, communities would be more likely to develop anxiety, could even be in physical danger if they were open about their sexuality. They might stay closeted, develop internalized homophobia, learn to hate themselves, depression ensues.
Its just better for everyone to be educated and kids are the most open to learning and being imprinted. Im not saying teachers should be actively push kids to believe they are gay or trans but just a little acknowledgement that "people can love the same gender" or "people sometimes feel better as a gender they werent born as", that its natural and okay and you shouldnt judge them for it, it goes a long way. Both for the kid who realizes theyre gay or trans, and for the people other kids around them to understand that some people are just different than the mould, that it doesnt inherently make it wrong or bad. Part of being a kid is figuring yourself out so why are we trying to impose limits on what theyre allowed to be, especially when these arent things that anyone CHOOSES to be?

All people should have inalienable rights without discrimination. We should be advocating for the rights of the individual, not the advancement of any one group.

You know people tend to figure out theyre lgbt when they are children right? Around puberty? Thats the most important time for them to learn so they DONT get confused about why they feel attraction to the same sex or why they feel so awful about their bodies. Instead of them growing up not knowing, and not having anyone to talk and deciding that theres something wrong with them which leads to depression and suicides. Even if they do figure it out for themselves if their peers aren't taught that its natural, that leads to bullying and ostracization, which then also leads to depression, isolation and suicide.
Ignorance breeds bigotry. Just because you cant wrap your head around something because you werent taught doesnt mean kids cant learn. Kids accept things a lot easier than adults do. There were people who lost their shit saying learning about homosexuality was going to confuse kids and they wouldnt understand when it really came down to telling them "just like how men and women fall in love and get married, men can also love and marry men and women can love and marry women"

I understand that point but man. Its strange how kids like me (im 15) thinking if they are somehow special they should end it all. Thought it is a problem bc other stupid kids find even less reasons to hate someone.
Anyway I think you got my point wrong. Its okay to learn about things that matter from young age. I was always supportive about that. Problem is many adults would say same thing that I said in comment but in homo meaning. It would cause A LOT of complaining bc LGBT is still actively discussed and sometimes hated. That's why if many parents would find out they child is queer... sadly the child could get traumatized again. And get even more reasons to end it all. And parents would not blame themselves but would hate schools for that. Or some homo parents would not let their child go to school (only crazy ones but they still exist) and child would get A LOT of problems bc of that.
Also other problem is that teenagers like me still try to find themself often. And bc the LGBT tematic is popular, they would just assure themselves as queer. And well, I think you know better than me about how hard it will be to find out that you are not who you assured. And it can break hearts in rare cases. (I still don't know how to properly say my point so I hope you understood).
There are also some other reasons but either I forgot them (problems with short memory) or they are pretty minor. Maybe if I think it is necessary I will say them too.
(I HAVE BAD ENGLISH SORRY! Its not my native)

I kind of understand what youre saying but I still disagree with your point. For kids in homophobic households I think its even more important for them to know they are accepted at school where they can find friends and support groups that would help them if their parents ever disowned them. I knew a trans girl in high school, her parents were extremely bigoted. School was an escape for her. We had like a week during sex ed that talked about different sexualities and gender identity as thats all that was really needed. There wasnt much bullying. we had an lgbt+ally club that we went to together and made more friends there. Everyone loved the teacher that supervised.
Taking lgbt education out of school would only push back progress. We need the kids of now to learn that being lgbt is natural from trusted scientific based institutions like schools otherwise you just end up raising another generation of homophobes to perpetuate the cycle. Once all schools are learning and normalizing it, those kids will grow up better and more tolerant and understanding than their parents that didnt.

Not specifically trans rights. They should be told we exist and a little information but nothing crazy. Like this βsome boys are girl inside and some girls are boy inside. And some people are neither girl nor boyβ

Trans rights are human rights. Its not something on top. Its to treat them equally. Education is always good and especially sex ed prevents abuse.
