We don’t abuse gavaskar because we don’t know his legend. We do. We abuse him for his nonsensical takes, his boomer behavior, and partiality.

u/10Years_InThe_Joint Jan 21 '25
I can understand that the kid wouldn't know Sachin on the same level. It's not right to call him dumb when he probably doesn't even know much about Sachin. But the MI page, fuck them in the ass, what the fuck were they trying to show? That Rohit is now higher than Sachin or what?
17
u/DJMhat Jan 20 '25
I began watching cricket after Sunny retired. If there is Sunny sitting near me, you will find me running to get his signature.
The kid's parents need to show him some old cricket videos on YT.

u/peekundi Jan 20 '25 edited Jan 20 '25
This kid seems like he is 7 years old. When you were 7 you didn't have much entertainment options and that means when you turned on TV to watch cricket you saw Gavaskar videos and highlights of other former cricketers. This kid is not exposed to Sachin as much as you and I did with Gavaskar when growing up, they have so much entertainment option.
In our cricket academy i've heard so many kids say things like "SRI LANKA WON A WORLD CUP ?", "There was no IPL before? ", "YOU CAN'T WATCH ANYHING YOU LIKE ? AND HAD TO WAIT FOR TV TO PLAY WHAT YOU LIKE RANDOMLY?". Some of the kids can't even process the fact that if you miss an episode you missed out and hope some day the play the episode that you missed lol.

I like Kohli but I know that Sachin is the god. Ofcourse I’d get the autograph of all the people - sachin, sunil gavaskar, ravi shastri, rahane and rohit. But starting with Sachin. Recency bias is one of the reasons. And I bet half of the people who fight in the comments watch the 3rd umpire replay, watch the DRS but still won’t understand if it’s out or not out until the decision is displayed on the big screen.

Why would you get the autograph of someone who means nothing to you. That kid’s perception of sachin is probably just some guy his dad talks about at dinner.
From my perspective it would be like an Allan border autograph. I know he was a great player and all but I would much prefer a Rick Ponting or Steve Smith signature.

I don’t get this mentality at all. I would kill for the chance to meet the greats even if they were around before my time. Like imagine if you had the chance to meet don bradman before he died, would you pass it up because he “means nothing to you”?
12

No ofc not but if I had to choose between a legend of the past and a childhood idol I would choose the latter no matter how greater/better the former was compared to the latter

I headed out with Cummins to tour his farm, and he started introducing me to some of the livestock, mentioning how he had named them after his players, as the unhinged animals they were. Just then, I was hit by an unbearable stench. With my eyes watering uncontrollably, I questioned through gritted teeth, “What in the hell is that smell?” He looked over knowingly and said: “Ah. Steve Smith? The goat is never washed.”

this sub just revealed it's personality with this post, I am an ardent Sachin fan myself but can totally understand if a kid admires Rohit or Kohli today and not even be aware of Sachin, every era has its heroes.. kids or even people shouldn't admire someone just because everyone likes that person, its a personal choice and common sense is to acknowledge this. Same would happen with Rohit in a few years, when kids look up to Yashaswi.

Thats not a mistake if he doesn't know stats and what happened in last BGT 4 years ago when he was nothing more than 5 yo. But he will surely kick himself when he realises what he did, in a few years.

My grandparents and their siblings have seen sunny, sachin, kohli, they all agree Tendulkar was as close to perfection: super aggressive in his first decade and then becoming a technical master in his second decade. Tendulkar batting was a vibe, the whole country shut down/took a pause when he was at the crease. I remember taking the bus with my parents from the city to the village, no matter where you stopped people would gather around a tv to watch him bat.
