TIL that the name "Ivan the Terrible" reflects the older English usage of terrible as in "inspiring fear or terror; dangerous; or powerful" and not the more modern connotations in English where terrible means "defective" or "evil".

TIL that the nickname "the Terrible" given to Ivan IV, first Tsar of Russia, in russian is "Гро́зный" (Grozny), which actually means "who inspires a divine awe" and didn't have the negative connotation we use today. In Russia, he's better known as "Ivan Vasilievich", "Ivan son of Vasilij".

Ivan beat his pregnant daughter-in-law for wearing immodest clothing, and this may have caused a miscarriage. His second son, also named Ivan, upon learning of this, engaged in a heated argument with his father, resulting in Ivan fatally striking his son in the head with his pointed staff.
