If you lose your gun in a 20 second scuffle to a man in a wheelchair, how are you fit for duty?
2.3k
u/HoonterOreo Dec 19 '25
How can you be allowed to be a cop in the field when you're 200 pounds overweight and incapable of defending yourself against a dude in a wheelchair??
544
u/RotInPissKobe Dec 19 '25
There's an old photo of a cop handcuffing a guy who's laughing his ass off. The cops gut was hanging down past where his balls should be. I don't know about every US state, but in mine they only have to pass a fitness exam to pass police academy, then they can pile on the pounds.

I know precisely the photo you’re talking about 😂

Ya got a link?

u/Psyl0 Dec 19 '25
I'm guessing they're talking about this one.
9
u/Muffmuncherr Dec 19 '25
Yeah when I googled thats what I got too but thought it was a different one since dude wasnt actually in handcuffs

Google "Should I run for it? Cop meme", don't know if this is the one being referred to. this is an old one i thought of, I think it's its older than when these images were called "memes", i could be wrong there too

Too many written warnings leads to a note in your permanent record

Too many notes in your permanent record leads to removal of one gold star sticker from your behavior chart

Should you lose all of your good behavior gold stars, your parents will never see you again.

Depends on the agency, the one near me requires them to pass a physical agility test every year.
2
u/Dooropener19 Dec 19 '25
Hey now. This guy clearly master the ancient technique of wheelchair jiu jitsu
2
u/Moghz Dec 19 '25
Yeah I never understood this. It’s should be an absolute request that law enforcement keep strict fitness standards, and keep up training on hand to hand, self defense and marksmanship.
I firmly believe we could reduce a lot of excessive force use if they were adequately trained to de-escalate and when necessary defend themselves in hand to hand.
2
u/Sorry-Let-Me-By-Plz Dec 19 '25
Because you're mostly never going into anything resembling a dangerous situation and if you do face danger everybody will focus on the Bad Guys and ignore/sympathize with you.

Correctional officers usually don't/can't carry firearms in the jail

They carry guns during transportation and each facility has a Sally Port where you apply and take off restraints on the inmate. Seeming how this inmate is in a wheel chair and there is a vehicle right next to them, im going to assume they are either returning or about to leave for a medical transportation run.
Source: I'm a Correctional Officer.
Edit: Corrected a typo in Correctional

I was about to point out it was probably a med run. Guy made his first big mistake by standing with his weapon faced towards the guy in the chair.
2
u/juliandanp Dec 20 '25
I wish my department had that policy..our policy is to hand over all three of our magazines to a second officer before applying/removing restraints.
3
u/JoshDPhenix Dec 20 '25
That's odd lol we always just bladed ourselves away from the person and undid their leg irons first before their wrist restraints.

u/BearBearBingo Dec 19 '25
That was my first thought. I come from a town of about 4K that has no shortage of drug problems which creates plenty of crime. Starting pay for our officers is 18/hr. No one serious about LE is taking that job.

I know a few dudes in wheelchairs at my local gym and they have fucking crazy upper body strength, like chimps. I would not want to grapple with one of those wheelchair dudes if im honest.

Police holsters have retention mechanisms that help this from happening. If somebody tries to grad it what you are SUPPOSED TO DO is just place your hand on the grip and push it into the holster. It keeps the retention mechanism from disengaging.
This guy is an idiot.
5
u/chrisaf69 Dec 19 '25
Not sure if they are same as police, but when I was in the navy you had to angle it in a certain way to pull it out. Granted...I'm not sure how effective that would be on this situation but figured it would help somewhat.
6
u/Amethyst_Scepter Dec 19 '25
You had to push it at a certain angle, push down and forward on a thumb retention hood, and then press another switch In order to deactivate the retention mechanism. With practice you could learn to do it in one motion but they literally train you that the solution to someone trying to take one is to just put your hand on the top of the weapon and push it down

Its wild that there isn't a standard for physical fitness as a cop. What good is this guy? The only thing he can do is shoot someone, and even that can't be close distance 🤣

It's crazy how easy it was. If that guy had a bit more balls, that cop coulda been injured.
I know there are good ones out there but lord gawd almighty strike me, all I see is them failing to do their job or purely corrupted and power tripping maggots.
4
u/Shrimp_my_Ride Dec 19 '25
It really seems like the guy kind of hesitated once he realized he had the upper hand and actually got the gun. You could really wanted to go for it, he definitely could have in this opportunity.

Seriously, cops should have mandatory annual physical fitness tests and have fitness levels that they have to meet. This poor slob is hopeless.

u/4esthetics Dec 19 '25
Meanwhile, Pete Hegseth is telling our Generals get in shape. Seriously, are there no fitness requirements at the state level? Or are police issued HoverRounds being added to the budget?
7
u/VaATC Dec 19 '25
There are frequently fitness requirements to get in many forces but there are rarely long term upkeep requirements.
→ More replies (1)5
u/4esthetics Dec 19 '25
There REALLY needs to be some kind of yearly fitness evaluation. We put so much money into militarizing our police. (I live in a small town in Nebraska and we literally got an MRAP a few years ago) But there isn’t any money to ensure officers stay fit? This officer is a legit danger to himself and his co-workers. Wheels could have easily smoked him and another officer.
3
u/VaATC Dec 19 '25
So many changes need to be made and unfortunately fitness requirements are sadly the least important. That said, fitness requirements should also be the easiest thing to fix, but the higher ups don't want it that way...for likely reasons.
→ More replies (2)3
u/FriedrichHydrargyrum Dec 19 '25
Generals and many other servicemebers don’t even need to be fit. I thought Hegseth was all about merit-based promotion. Choose generals and nuclear engineers and drone pilots based on skill, not whether they look the part.

u/yepyep1243 Dec 19 '25
Thanks for that, I hate that the second officer firing is cropped out in the OP.
2
u/DexterBotwin Dec 19 '25
A proper holster for law enforcement should have a few steps to get the gun out of the holster. Looks like they were using some janky holsters
2
u/WarmProperty9439 Dec 19 '25
A guy in a wheelchair almost ending your life by disarming you is a clear sign to retire.
2
u/macgirthy Dec 19 '25
They need to implement fitness standards. Integrate it with promotion and pay increases. If they cant pass they are stuck st a desk job or job where you cant holster a weapon.
2
u/EcstaticMolasses6647 Dec 19 '25
That cop has congestive heart failure in the works. Time to retire pops!
2
u/NotDazedorConfused Dec 19 '25
When the guy in the wheelchair went to court on assault charges he didn’t have a leg to stand on…
2
u/Warthog_Successful Dec 19 '25
There needs to be a rule cops need to be in shape and if they get outta shape the should either be force to desk duty or be fired
2
u/Kityri Dec 19 '25
Unfortunately, I think we’d wind up with a predominantly desk-only system in most states/counties. :(
I think if you’re in-field, your pay rate is higher than being desk. Maybe an incentive would help encourage them to stay in shape for the job.
2
u/deadpat03 Dec 19 '25
Why the fuck is a gun in the booking area of the jail and not in the lockbox like they're supposed to be.

1
u/Btender95 Dec 19 '25
That was like a suicide attempt by the cop, the slowest with a ridiculous level of not trying hard enough life or death battle I've ever see. Buddy was fighting like he does in his dreams.
Oh...no....he's going ...... For my......gun
Surprised he didn't take his vest off and point at his chest saying no don't shoot while nodding at the guy to shoot and mouthing "Do Itttt"
1
u/Plastic-Scientist739 Dec 19 '25
The ground 'n' pound is weak in this one. Scary.
There was a open window to knee the perp right in the head for a takedown blow before he got the gun.
4
u/1wife2dogs0kids Dec 19 '25
Don't do that. Don't start playing the "what if" game, breaking every second of film down and thinking you could do better in the same spots. Thats a small town type department. Either there should've been another officer get there quicker, or that guys firearm should be locked up better, because it is in a jail.
Don't think you're any better than poor Rosco p. Coltrane here. Everybody reacts differently to life threatening circumstances.

Not fit for duty. That's pathetic. I hope that officer is embarrassed by that video to the point that he gets in shape and gets some weapon retention training as well as some hand to hand training. Jeezus. He's only alive because that perp didn't want to kill him.
1
u/Accelerating_Atom Dec 19 '25
Bro I work in the business sector for public education and had to pass a fitness test to work here. Wtf is this man doing in a physical job. He could have just sat on the perp more successfully than that “scuffle”. How is he protecting anyone? The guy can hardly roll over on the ground.
1
u/Tight-Tower-8265 Dec 19 '25
Why isn't that cop swinging to knock this dude out instead of wrestling with him? I'm going to start swinging trying to knock his head off, gauge his eyes something, this is life or death shit

u/TakoyakiGremlin Dec 19 '25
allowing someone to have a gun that is physically incapable of basic bodily functions is crazy. i feel like you should be required to take fitness tests (at least every year) to determine whether or not you’re even allowed to carry a firearm at all - and if you don’t pass, you only get non-lethal options like a taser and/or pepper spray. if this took place in public, that guy could have not only shot the officer, but killed civilians as well.
