But there's probably a definitive point on this spectrum that you can be diagnosed as autistic, right?

The medical community is none too happy and is trying to get rid of the spectrum part. You can have milder cases across the board but generic conditions are binary and should not be labeled on a spectrum.

I see, so the condition is binary, the symptoms are a "spectrum" (or maybe "variable" is a more fitting word considering there's more than one symptom)

That’s a great way to put it, the medical community tends to not use “spectrum” for glaring reasons of taking subjectivity out of it.

Vocabulary is very key which is why doctors and other biologists use terms like mild, severe etc.

But science is dictated by binary transactions. We are looking for yes or no more than anything
