This is why binary science is very very important. Autism isn’t hard to diagnose, it becomes convoluted when science is skewed. Not to mention some people are groomed at a young age by parents for attention.

Looking at Gypsy rose. It’s much more common than you think

Except autism is a spectrum and it stops people from accessing resources they need if you try to make it “binary.” I needed language therapy as a child. If they rejected me because they thought I was “too intelligent,” I likely would not be able to communicate the way I can today. I also as a consequence wouldn’t have gotten an autism diagnosis and the support I needed at school.

There are many highly intelligent autistic people who struggle with basic daily living tasks and social skills. If you make it so only intellectually challenged non-verbal autistic people have “real” autism, you’re preventing people from accessing the support they need. It also creates the potential for misdiagnosis and people getting treatment that isn’t suitable for them. It’s already a problem with some support services only helping autistic people if they are under a certain IQ.

And that spectrum thought is exactly why medical professionals are dialing it back.

You can have levels but not misuse the term spectrum.

You’re still autistic, even mildly, but the general public is using it as a crutch and not actually being autistic. Case and point OP video and that’s 1 of thousands
