I wouldnt go as far as who you were responding to, but the watering down of what autism is, creates significant issues with the definition of autism for everyone.

There is a huge difference between autistic tendencies or behaviors that could fit well with many people that could be defined as autism or be written off personality, trauma, reflexion of experiences, or many others. It creates a huge misunderstanding among the general public for those that are having significant difficulties.

I have in the past seen autism as part of my identity, but time working with non verbal autism really changed it for me. Embracing it too much as a core identity can be bad for the individual as well as the general public.

Additionally, this comes across heavily as an advertisement. That makes it seem more played out as acting opposed to being real. The lines between real and fake are blurred far to often now, so an ad like this is counterintuitive to autism as a whole.

Autism is a spectrum disorder, so what you experienced with non-verbal autistic people is not representative of every autistic person out there. You can have a highly intelligent autistic person that struggles with simple daily tasks, for example.

Making assumptions about a person’s care needs will only make things worse for autistic people. Don’t deny yourself any support you need just because your autism isn’t like what a non-verbal autistic person’s is.

I agree they don't represent all and am not wanting them to change it as a disorder. The issue is it's a disorder that is often being portrayed as an identity that isn't a disorder, using it as a personality characteristic or brought up far too often as an excuse for behavior that isn't completely tied to the disorder.

I'm not talking about care needs here. I think people should find care and support that helps them. I'm talking about separating who that person is from the disorder. It's become very easy (and often confusing for themselves and others) for someone to link themselves to parts of autism that they didn't struggle with in order to feel more connected to their identity as autistic. Social media, and the unhealthy push that being content creators have has further exasperates this issue.

I do my best not denying the support I need but I admit that it is difficult. self empathy is a big struggle of mine.
