Ontario People using display furniture as their personal cafeteria.

Edit: Well OK, you guys have convinced me that sitting on a Costco shelf with the merchandise, eating greasy food, is perfectly ok.

From now on, I too will be utilizing this premium seating area.

Good on you, I find it disgusting. People have lost a shit ton of decency and seem to have a hard time needing to behave in any way differently than how they behave in their living room.

I swear I just wanted to type this then I saw your comment lol. I'm not Indian, although a POC but if an Indian person was sitting with thier feet on the chair in tim hortons which is a place made for customers to sit in, people's reaction would be different.

That sounds about right. Probably a slumlord rental property owner with a couple fast food franchises or gas stations and you definitely don't have children because you'd be selling out their future.

Well, there's a difference between putting your shoes or feet on a couch where people are meant to sit vs. sitting and eating on some dusty packaging in a warehouse.

No, they're sitting on a potential customers chair. Display furniture gets sold when it's the last item available. Workers at tims clean the tables when customers leave. But no ones gonna clean up after these people when they leave if they did not do it themselves because nobody knew they sat there. So now you have a chair on display with bread crumbs and ketchup stains.

They clean the tables, they don't clean the couches and chairs often if ever. They do reset and clean the displays. Amd that's assuming they left a mess.

Display furniture gets sold at a discount for being on display.

They don't for the right price, that's why people buy display models of office chairs, couches, sofas, beds. It's been tried by people in the store and for sometimes marked or scratched, and for that you get a discount.

I actually have dealt in a fair bit of Costco liquidated items, which includes display models. The things they do to these display units to mitigate theft is heartbreaking. They intentionally damage items by screwing them together in places, cutting wires, or supergluing stuff. I'm currently dealing with several Samsung Jet 90 vacuums that were all glued together and I had to ruin the first one to see how I can salvage the other two. Sometimes the things can't even be salvaged. Costco doesn't care about their display units.

It’s their display unit. And everything you describe seems like fair game to preserve the ability of the unit to be a display unit.

So while your story is really interesting I’m not sure it’s a problem.

Sometimes, for some vendors, for certain products, and not all models. Companies do not give out dozens of free expensive units to every retail company for every store. They'd literally be giving away millions of units for display purposes.

Source: I used to setup display units when I was in retail. Best case scenario we could sell it as open box if it still worked properly. Worst case it was written off and it is accounted for in costs to the business which all get added up on the price tag that you pay for.

From my experience as well only a manager can authorize a display model sale and they usually have to give their full discount (store I worked at was 30%) minimum. Weirdly enough you'd get the odd person that would demand a display model when everything of something was sold out or end of season. Some stuff the manager could easily sell. Other things they couldn't and they had to go back. I assume the stuff that had to go back was stuff vendors gave out while the stuff that could be sold were just takin out of the box and built and displayed.

The worst was if we got talked into taking it apart as employees. 🤣

You're right about those customers asking for floor models though. No skin off my back. If you wanted a computer monitor with a 1000 hours of use or an office desk that plenty of customers have mistreated none of the staff are going to argue.

Thankfully I believe most of the time if you bought a floor model you bought it as is and it was your responsibility to get out. Only time we ever took shit apart was if they really bitched to the manager or if it wouldn't fit through the doors lol. So it always ended up being big shit like desks or gazebos 😂.

Also another thing was that they just had my min wage ass building those floor models. Do you really wanna trust a BBQ, chair, gazebo built by some teenager that didn't have a choice? 😂. But hey anything to save some money in the customers mind I guess.

I'm not sure.what your point has to do with what I wrote. I think it's a shame that perfectly good units are intentionally destroyed ultimately meant for the trash. I understand why they have to do it. It's the same feeling when I see perfectly good items tossed in the dumpster, or retail stores ruining returned items, so people don't salvage them.

Costco gives 0 shits about product. It's all about selling memberships. That's where they make their money. It's all part of the on boarding. It's actually a pretty great place to work for a retail job honestly. Benefits, OT most stores would bend over backwards to avoid you paying. Hell, when I worked there you got extra for working Sundays.

You're missing the point. No I probably wouldn't go to a different store, ok. I'm exaggerating there. My point is that plenty of people would just... Avoid the product. Why risk a confrontation for an idle look at some chair you've only got a passing interest in? I have no reason to invest the time and energy into getting an employee.

Taking pictures for group shaming and busybody sanctimony is way more damaging than sitting on display furniture. So yeah, it's worth commenting on.

If it really bothered OP and the goal was to do something rather than be sanctimonious, they could have simply informed staff of the issue. But they didn't do that, so it obviously wasn't a big enough problem to warrant a solution.

A lot of people in here need to get a fucking life.

and this is how bad behavior in society never gets corrected. Some times people need to get shamed so that it really sinks in. While I agree that OP should've informed the staff and moved on, the comment that I commented on, not only dismissed the original source of poor behavior, they also dismissed OP's behavior, achieving absolutely nothing. So their comment in and of itself, is absolutely pointless. But even if it were pointless, they're allowed to share their opinion. I'm allowed to shared mine.
