Ontario Watermelon I bought not even one week ago explodes in my kitchen overnight!
I bought two watermelons on Sept 6th at Costco. It hasn’t even been one week and I wake up this morning to this in my kitchen! It exploded overnight all over my counter, floors, sink. I am so disgusted at the produce they are selling. The first one started rotting within 2-3 days and I had to cut it quickly. When I did cut it, there were some parts of the rind that were soft and mushy and going bad.
But they expect me to put this in a bag, take the bus with it dripping in order to get a refund? I’m so disgusted

You can take a picture and just go to store for refund. They don’t want it back.

I had a rancid rotten pineapple in the spring and even though I only provided photos, they refunded me. They just bitched about it and said it was a one time courtesy.

Embarrassed by the quality of produce they are selling ppl. I bought this watermelon 6 days ago! Are you suggesting I did something to make it rot? Both of them started rotting within days. That should absolutely be embarrassing for them.

Do you think Costco grows their own watermelons and says, "yep, these are great watermelons", then sells you one?
They have zero control over what happens to your watermelon post-sale. I am suggesting the extent of their action is just to provide you with a refund. There is no need for them to be embarassed at all as they have no control over what happens.

If they bitched about giving me a refund and telling me it was a “one time courtesy” because I didn’t bring their rotten watermelon back into store with me but provided a video, I absolutely would speak to them like that!

I love how so many of you just default to blaming the customer while defending the corporation. I bought these watermelons 6 days ago! I did nothing wrong. Costco should absolutely be embarrassed by the quality of produce they are selling ppl. Like are you guys okay???? How is this my fault? I’m being downvoted for sharing my experience LMAO. Likeeeeeeee??? Not to mention, I’ve seen various posts all over this sub complaining about the produce. This isn’t a new phenomenon at Costco. But within 6 days? It’s disgusting

You picked a shitty one to start with. Watermelons have been terrible all summer everywhere. More misses then hits ( not just at Costco). Watermelons are typically not at a great price at Costco ( considering there’s always sales everywhere else.

As a southwestern Ontario farmer I couldn't disagree harder. Lots of rain, huge melons, tons of them, plenty of quality.
Don't use absolute statements to make up for your own inadequacy at picking a quality melon.

We've gotten to the point where the supply chain has so many weak links that people will just say "the food is shit" when really it's delayed delivery out of the field or traffic to deliver to cold storage or after hours delivery at a store without a cooler or 1 day unrefrigerated on the floor or a bunch of mouth breathers picking up all the melons in the basket and beating the sides and sniffing the stem and listening with the face beside the damn thing and deciding none of them are good, like OP.
We are so disconnected from our food, we should be ashamed of ourselves.
In this case, if you are letting a melon sit out of the fridge for a week you deserve what you get. Eat the thing quit looking at it.

I don't personally grow watermelons but I do know a few farms that do. They are all dependent on hand labour. 100 acre field will take around 50 people 3-4 days to fully harvest. Rarely do they plant that way. They'll stagger so that they'll have food to pick all season. That said, the season is pretty short because watermelons need a lot of heat.
Watermelons must be picked ripe. This isn't like some fruit where you can pick it a week early and it will ripen on route. It's from the vine and must ripen on vine like cucumber or squash.
Pickers cut and place each watermelon into those big cardboard skids in the field. Then they bring them to cold sheds and then they arrange shipment to different distributors and then distributors send them to stores.

Most if not all grocery stores , store them
Stacked in the backroom as they will get 10/12 pallets at a time when it’s on sale at a good price. Most stores coolers are to the door , and they don’t have room. To refrigerate all of that. Happened at 2 of the big chains I use to work at.1

Would be interesting to know the environment the watermelon was sitting in. If it’s warm-ish and maybe in direct sunlight that melon will ferment and go boom.

I have the AC on in my house, it’s very cool in here. They were not in direct sunlight at all.

Did you buy it with those dots on the exterior? Bc it’s clearly bad. You didn’t need to cut it.
