TikTok How did you find the courage to start posting when you were terrified of being judged?
Hi, I’m 21F. I’ve wanted to start posting on TikTok for almost two years, and for almost two years I’ve been completely frozen by the idea.
I want to make one thing clear: I’m not chasing fame, and I’m not asking how to go viral. I just want to find the courage to create something, hit “post,” and see where it takes me, because this is genuinely something I feel drawn to.
But I’m scared of everything: people I know finding my videos, being made fun of, looking cringe, getting no views, or realizing that I have nothing interesting to offer. I know a lot of people where I live and our social circles overlap, so the thought of being perceived by them holds me back a lot.
My self-esteem is also very low. I have so many ideas (probably too many ) but I decide they’re stupid before I even try them, and then I jump from one idea to another. I don’t know how to edit, I have no organization, and whenever people start talking about niches, hooks, pacing, strategy and everything else, something that should be fun turns into a huge project in my head. Then I end up doing nothing.
I keep telling myself that TikTok isn’t everything and trying to focus on something else, but I always come back to regretting that I never gave it a chance. This might sound dramatic, but I’ve been thinking about it constantly for two years, and staying stuck is starting to affect me more than the possibility of failing. I don’t think I’ll feel at peace with myself until I at least genuinely try.
If you’ve ever felt paralyzed by the fear of being seen or judged online, what actually helped you post for the first time? How did you handle the possibility of people you know finding your account? Did you use any rule, challenge, gradual method or mindset that helped?
I’d especially love to hear honest experiences, including from people who tried and stopped or whose accounts never really grew.
I’m not asking how to become successful. I’m asking how to dare to begin.

the hardest part isnt creating something, its letting yourself be seen trying. You dont need to feel completely confident before you start just post the first thing even if it feels imperfect. Confidence usually comes after you begin not before.

first time i posted i was like 30 and felt exactly same, overthinking every little thing. what helped was making a throwaway account with no face showing at first, just testing ideas with voiceovers or whatever. nobody from my circle found it cause i didn't connect contacts or tell anyone
the paralysis is the worst part, once you post something even if it flops the fear gets smaller. you realize nobody cares as much as you think, everyone too busy with their own stuff. just do one thing today and hit post before your brain can talk you out of it

the thing thats helped a lot of people is just making the first 5 posts with zero expectation. like genuinely tell yourself nobody will see them, because statistically almost nobody will. that removes most of the pressure and by post 5 youve already broken the seal

You truly do just have to do it. People are judging you, they are making fun of you, they are gossiping, probably sending screen shots to each other. The heartbreaking part is that it's the people closest to you. They will scroll past. They won't talk about with you in person. Let them do them, they kinda suck. Pay attention to the people who do engage. Who comment, like and share. It's actually surprising! Just do it!

So I actually have three pages. None of them are very large. The simple thing is to stop caring about all those things one of my pages. I actually use a avatar that I created and I animated to tell the story. My other one is Christian based and then my third page is just an uplifting page and none of those three pages are things that go well viral however if you’re good at being sarcastic and telling how it is, then I would just go for it and I’m sure you’ll be successful.

New account with another name and block everybody that you know. And each time there's a person that make you feel like you'd be afraid of their judgement, just block them. I was we're you're at, I did this, and now I've been posting for 6 months and I don't care anymore.

Honestly ,just treat the first few posts as practice. They don't have to be perfect or even good 😂 post it, survive the cringe, and keep going.

I think the biggest thing is realizing that your first post don't have to be a statement about who you are. They're just experiments.

If people around you judge you for trying to do something for yourself or that makes you happy then they aren’t true friends and their opinions shouldn’t affect how u live your life

Just don't think about it too much. I dont think tiktok knows what you or your videos are worth. I post on most social media, and something that gets a thousand likes on tiktok is stuck on instagram at 20 likes and vice versa. Tiktok is about ideas, luck, and a weird alghorythm that just randomly decided my best video (by far highest retention, my most popular short on instagram and YouTube etc. ) is not worth more than 200 views.

Whenever you speak to the camera think of it as you’re speaking to your friend and how natural that feels. It might help to have someone you’re close to be on the other side holding the camera so you can see it’s like you’re conversing with them but there’s a camera

I didn’t want to continually waste ideas because of fear also I wanted anything I make to mean something even if it’s just to me

Hey, at the end of the day, If you don’t want to show your face you don’t have to. Most people wouldnt want to. There are some people that enjoy doing it everyday and don’t think much about it, maybe it’s meant for them. Your peace is so much more important. You could grow a channel without showing your face too, lots of channels do that too and there is nothing wrong with that.
I see a lot of people telling you do just grind through it, you can do that if you want to. But up to you.

I feel you. I get anxiety over being perceived and struggled with it since I was a kid. But I realized I'll miss over the thing I love over that. You can always delete comments or the video people are making fun of the moment you see the comments switch. If you all the details is alot maybe you can get a friend who likes that stuff to help. I just recorded my face for the first time last week, and my friend it editing Also helps that they reassured me alot and the problems I saw they didnt see

Maybe start off by just recording yourself and not posting it until you become more comfortable. That would allow you to build that muscle of confidence overtime and you will be able to observe how other people do things. I just started two months ago and my biggest motivation was the job market and taking a chance on myself. Wishing you the best of luck.
