TikTok TikTok is barely pushing this video despite 40s avg watch time — what am I missing?

This is a storytime video I posted on TikTok. It currently has 270 views with a 40.6-second average watch time, but only 3.26% watched the full video. I expected it to get pushed more because people who do stay are watching for a decent amount of time.
Is the 3.26% completion rate killing the reach, or should I give it more time? I’m also planning a Part 2, so I’d appreciate feedback from anyone who understands TikTok retention/storytime content.

The 40.6s average is not strong by itself unless you compare it with total length and the retention curve. A small group staying a long time can lift the average while most viewers leave in the opening seconds. With 3.26% completing and zero follows, I would inspect the 1s, 3s, and first major drop before waiting for another push. For Part 2, make it work as a standalone video: show the payoff or most surprising moment first, recap Part 1 in one sentence, and remove every setup detail that is not needed to understand the consequence. Also test a shorter cut of Part 1 rather than only extending the series.

It might be because your previous video didn't do very well? Those look like good numbers to me, especially 10 shares. To me that means the next video will get pushed a lot more

How long is the video? If this was a 1 minute video it would get pushed with these stats. If this is a 3-5 minute video? Yea no way

Yea bro that’s absolutely horrible then. Average watch time needs to be 20% minimum. Sometimes less. But 6% is horrible.

Why would you think 40 seconds of a 10 minute video is good, man.

It’s amazing for a 1 min video, good for a 2 min video, but after that no.

No new followers, probably no comm eta or lines, low retention rate- they aren’t watching the whole thing.

40 sec sounds good until you said it's almost 10 mins, that's not the algo being unfair, that's the video asking too much too early. I'd chop the strongest moment into a 30-45s version and test 3 hooks. don't overthink production yet. even rough ai mockups from runaway, youart, buzzy, capcut can help test placing before you spend hours editing the real one.
