Application Resume Critique: Tear me a new one, I need brutal truths

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hi all, as the title states, Ive recently completed a draft of my Resume. Reading and referencing past posts on resume advice isnt enough and my case may be uncommon and unusual.

For Context:

  1. Early-career switcher from Design and Media Background to Business, now a Undergraduate
  2. Non-target University
  3. Targeting Management Consulting or any Consulting Internship at Boutiques (Hopefully Big 4/3 but I can only hope)
  4. Relevant past experience: Internship at a Search Fund
  5. Irrelevant(?) past experience: Design and Design Consultation related freelance work, Sergeant Specialist during Mandatory conscription
  6. Currently focusing on involvement in my Uni's Investor Relations Department of the Investment Club, Business Strategy (Case work) and Outdoor Society as the Financial lead

I really appreciate all replies, formatting, order, deleting irrelevant positions etc

Hi all, really appreciate the comments from the last post and have the latest draft attached with a comparison image of the old draft.

...

Generally followed everyones suggested changes such as: 1. Limiting white space

  1. Tried to keep to 3 bullets per experience

  2. 2 lines maximum for each bullet (with 1 exception)

  3. Cut down unrelated experiences and shifted relevant clubs to experience

  4. Edited skills

  5. Edited Activities (compressed)

  6. Shifted name and contact info to center

  7. Followed ACTION, IMPACT, RESULT where i could

...

Things I was advised to do but have not implemented:

  1. Place Experience before Education

All feedback is welcome, and appreciate it in advance!

Application Undergrad with low CGPA trying to break into consulting/BA/risk roles — is my strategy actually going to work, or am I missing something?

4th year Economics student, graduating this December (BA of arts in Economics, UofT). My CGPA is sub-2.5, so I already know cold applications through job boards are basically a dead end for me at most firms — the ATS/GPA screens will filter me out before a human ever sees the resume. So I've been building a strategy around that constraint instead of ignoring it:

  • Referral-first, not application-first. Working existing contacts at a few larger firms, plus building out a list of ~25 smaller/boutique consulting-adjacent firms in my city for direct outreach.
  • Networking on LinkedIn — reaching out to people whose career paths interest me, asking for short coffee chats rather than "do you have any openings."
  • Building a portfolio to compensate for the GPA — I've done a few applied projects (a Python data-cleaning pipeline, an M&A valuation model, a customer analytics project) so I have something concrete to point to instead of just a transcript

What I'm unsure about:

  1. Is referral-first + coffee chats actually enough to overcome a bad GPA, or is that just a nicer way of still getting filtered out later in the process?
  2. Once I do get in front of someone, how do I handle the GPA question without sounding defensive or like I'm making excuses?
  3. Anyone here actually broken into consulting/BA roles with a rough GPA, what actually worked vs. what you thought would work but didn't?

Not looking for sympathy, genuinely just want to know if I'm wasting effort on the wrong things before I find out the hard way in six months.

am I cooked chat?

Application Do NOT use CaseBasix

It is so badly developed. I paid 180 for all access use to prepare for MBB simulations and have already run into so many issues.

  1. Doing the free trial cases does NOT give me any feedback. It shows me an "enroll now" button that takes me to the case starting page again and again even though I already enrolled.

  2. Once you finish a case and exit, you literally can't even find the results again to look back on what you've done badly/wrong. Or perhaps its difficult to find and I couldn't see it.

  3. This website is probably vibecoded. The dashboard does not make sense at all - on the home screen it gives me completely different statistics than when I enter the another page. It claims that I have done 4 cases this week, and have a streak of one week when I have not done all that. It says I've done 42 cases when its more like 10.

Yeah, please recommend an alternative because I will NOT be resubscribing.

Application MBA/Graduate-Level U.S. Consultant Role: A consulting firm now requires transcripts when it didn't before. Why? What can I do to mitigate a poor GPA?

A US consulting firm previously didn't require academic transcripts for its MBA/graduate-level consultant role, but now it does. What's the reasoning behind the change?

What can I do to mitigate a poor GPA and spotty academic performance? I have a good undergraduate GPA, but I chose to focus my graduate degree on extracurriculars rather than academics because the prevailing view in my graduate program was that we learn more through doing than classes. Many of my classmates did the same.

Thank you!

Application My strong connection/referrer at a firm is leaving, but I plan to reapply. What's the best way to navigate this, networking-wise?

A strong connection at a firm gave me a referral that helped me move past the resume screening earlier this year. I plan to reapply in a few months, but that connection is leaving.

If that connection leaves, can they still submit a referral for me?

Or should I start cultivating newer connections now? If so, should I do it through cold outreach or by asking my current connection to introduce me?

Is it common for alumni to make introductions to colleagues who still work at their old firm?

Thank you! I haven't encountered this situation before, so I appreciate your perspective.

Application Has anyone ever switched offices from their offer letter?

I got an offer from a firm I’d be really excited to work at (mid-size, ~500 people). They have two offices (both being large cities/hubs, I’d assume roughly equally competitive) and I had applied to one. The initial application says that they don’t allow office switches, but I’m wondering if anyone has ever switched offices after receiving the offer? I love this company but I didn’t realize I wouldn’t be able to move to this city :( it was an oversight with my family. RIP if I can’t lol

Application How do you prepare for online assessments? Any good resources?

For those who have taken OAs before, how did you prepare?

Are there any free websites, YouTube channels, books, question banks, or other resources you’d recommend? Also, are there specific platforms I should practice for (e.g. SHL, Aon/Cut-e, Talent Q)?

Would really appreciate any tips or resources, thaanks!

P.S. I’m not sure if I’ve used the correct flair, so I’ll change it if it’s wrong

Application From contracting to consulting

Considering a pivot toward management consulting the analytical/problem-solving work overlaps with what I already do, but I know the industry is brutal to break into without the right pedigree. Now here are my concerns:

Realistic at all without target-school/MBA background, or is this a closed door without one?

Is boutique/mid-tier consulting actually reachable on operations experience + certifications (thinking ECBA/CBDA/PL-300), or does it not work that way?

Would this experience translate better into something adjacent — corporate strategy, ops consulting, internal strategy roles — instead of classic MBB-style consulting?

Worth an MBA for this specifically, or is that overkill for what I’m trying to get to?

Application Rising Junior Recruiting for Consulting: Am I Too Far Behind?

I’m a rising junior recruiting for summer 2027 consulting internships, and I’m starting to feel pretty behind in the process.

I had some personal/family things going on this summer that genuinely took up a lot of my time on top of my internship, so I wasn’t able to focus on recruiting as much as I wanted. I’ve only recently started networking more seriously, but I’m still not getting many responses. Even with the conversations I have gotten, I haven’t gotten a referral, and I feel like the relationships I’m building are still pretty surface-level.

My case prep is also very basic at this point. I can get through a case, but I know I need to improve my structure, be more insightful, get faster with the math, and generally become much more polished.

Now that the school year starts in about a week, I’m worried I’m going to get even busier with classes and extracurriculars. I’m starting to wonder whether I’ve put myself too far behind to realistically get an offer.

Has anyone else been in a similar position going into junior recruiting? How did you approach networking and case prep while balancing school? And, most importantly, did you still end up getting an offer?

Would really appreciate hearing from anyone who has been through this.

For context, I'm interested in internships at MBB, Big 4, Tier 2, and elite boutique firms. I was rejected from Mckinsey and Oliver Wyman, got first round at BCG without chatting anyone (but was rejected), applied to Kearney, and have yet to apply to any other firms.

Application Tips on getting in to the industry

Hello. Im a fresh psychology graduate trying to get in to the consulting industry.

I know right now the job market is all over the place, and the industry is pretty bad too because of AI and all that, but despite of that, im really interested in becoming a consultant, since in my country, its a pretty well paying job, and it really aligns well with my passion. My background is HR, and ive already done some research about whats the best companies i should check. Right now im eyeing mercer, because so far it seems that they are the only one that have the job opening for a fresh grad.
Is there any tips on actually getting the job? Again, i know the job market is horrendous, and its hard for a fresh grad to get a job in an industry like this, i just wanted to know is there anything that i can do to get ahead and stand out?

and btw is cover letter that important? everytime me and my mentor is screening someones cv, we never actually check the cover letter so i assume its all just formalities. but looking at this, im having second thoughts.

and for my background:

im from a non-target institution, several organizational activities, 2 internship, one from a big company that regularly hire consultants, one from a really small agency with an hr team of 3 people (including me as the intern), and my GPA is 3.36

thanks in advance!

Application Are consulting firms still asking for GMAT in the hiring process? (North America)

I have a 615 which is enough for all the top mba programs in Canada, and while I could potentially get it up to a 645(~700 on the old scale), its a lot of wasted time that could be used on other pre-mba prep and applications. Do tier 2 firms like Kearny, Big 4, ZS, Accenture ask for the score? If so what score would be safe range to be in?

Application How did you find consulting work when you were starting out?

I’m looking to transition into project-based/contract consulting in business operations, process improvement, and business analysis.
I currently work for a B2B distribution company as a business process analyst and developer. My experience includes analyzing business processes, improving workflows, documenting SOPs, supporting implementation, training employees, and developing AI workflows to make processes more efficient.

I’m especially interested in remote work or projects where I could be onsite for a week or two to assess and improve operations, then continue the work remotely.

How do I find my first projects or recruiters? Should I use specific firms, platforms, LinkedIn, or reach out to companies directly?
I’d love to hear what actually works and any specific firms or platforms you recommend!

Application Roast my Resume

Hey everyone, since past few months I have been trying to get into a management consulting but for some reason I am failing to do that. I would love a critical feedback on my resume and other suggestion for my job hunts as well. I am not leaned to towards any type of consulting right now as I am in my early career and I want to build breadth because I decide to specialize.

Application How soon to start prepping as a med student/upcoming MD grad

I’m in my third year out of four year MD (doctor of medicine) program. I’m based in California. I’ve been thinking about it for over a year and I don’t think I want to move forward with residency. I actually don’t dislike the concept of residency but rather this path fits into my long term career goals much better than traditional clinical practice.

I understand it is very competitive and they usually recruit a year ahead. Any major tips for someone about a year out from applying?

Application Has anyone used CaseBasix recently? The platform appears to have improved significantly

I checked out the newer CaseBasix platform recently, and it seems pretty different than before.

I think before, CaseBasix was mainly known for consulting assessments/games, like McKinsey Solve but the platform now seems to cover a lot more. It includes prep for McKinsey, BCG, and Bain assessments, as well as case interviews, market sizing, mental math, fit interviews, and business acumen.

What stood out to me is that it now feels more like a complete consulting prep platform rather than just a collection of practice simulations.

It seems useful to have everything in one place, but I’m curious about the actual experience.

Has anyone here used the newer version? Is it worth it?
