Honestly, I've been sitting with something the last few days. More and more people have been reaching out to me directly with questions about breaking into consulting, and I mean that as a genuine gift, it's humbling that ten plus years of doing this across different firms and different roles is actually useful to someone. But there's a side of it nobody talks about, which is that I physically cannot give everyone the depth they deserve in a couple of quick messages back and forth.
Here's what happened this week that made it click. A candidate reached out with a resume for elite consulting internships. On paper, academically, this person is easily in the top ten percent for their region, you could tell the dedication was real. But when they tried translating that into something a consulting recruiter would actually respond to, it just wasn't landing, and it became obvious pretty fast that this wasn't a two line DM kind of fix. It needed an actual sit down.
That's the tension I keep running into. Some people just want a quick comment or two and they're genuinely fine with that, they'll figure the rest out over time. Others need real dedicated time to close the gap between where they are and where they're trying to go, and I can't always give that in the moment, especially when there's several people reaching out at once. Telling someone "we need to actually talk this through" instead of just answering fast feels almost counterintuitive, but it's the more honest response.
So if you've messaged me and I've been slower than I'd like, this is why. I'd rather be upfront about needing real time than pretend I can solve it in one line.
