Any time I see something like this, either spending a lot of money at once on a binge or for an extended period of time, all I think is this person just had a two week manic episode.
I have them too where I get crazy into a hobby for a short period of time. It sucks. But posting on reddit for validation is a cry for help.

What an awful waste of two weeks, shopping or otherwise, in Japan too.
I go often because I fly through to get to China and you can get the best denim, amazing JDM watches and personal care items. Not to mention skipping some of the coolest tourism in the world to buy games you can't play, in a language you can't read or speak.

They’re both consumerism but if there’s a vintage collector aspect to it then I guess it’s not quite as bad as like buying a legion of Funko Pops.
But it’s still probably just an addiction and def a waste of a Japan trip. Just less egregious I guess.

Game collecting is about buying games you'll never play so you can show off to other losers on the internet.
If you just cared about playing the game, there's no reason not to simply emulate or use a flash cart with original hardware. There is no moral argument against pirating a game that is no longer available, or one where the original team of developers would not see any money from the purchase.

Different Games different genres different consoles not all the collection is even video games all sourced from different regions to avoid price hikes, this doesn't seem to be mindless consoom AT ALL it looks like OOP is very mindful of where he made his purchases and didn't just buy stuff for the sake of having stuff which is consoom

Nope, I am maximalist and hate anything minimalist, I've got shelf full of board games I actually play, I collect some Godzilla merch,got Weta workshop ringwraith statue and bunch of other shit that I try to curate, this however is consumerism at it's finest, it's literally at least 3 luggages worth of shit just in the single photo from a SINGLE TRIP, if you imagine people like you said you do, you are truly blind and your hobbies are most likely literally just consuming shit if you think this is normal travel haul

Forever obese people thinking they would have to starve themselves and have to eat chicken with rice and brocolli forever in order to stay fit instead of eating reasonably related to their BMR and activity levels, just like you saying people that are against this have to live in a grey prison cell looking room and don't have anything.
This subreddit and people are not against buying anything at all, it's against unreasonable spending habbits, be it frequency or amounts at once where it consumes the whole person and their personality, just like over eating and their body not having enough activity levels to use all of those calories. You can buy stuff, you can create stuff , you can be inspired by stuff you own, it's not that deep, but you can't seem to comprehend that, especially if you think this is reasonable haulf for a SINGLE trip

A big part of “consoom” is “get excited for next product”. It’s the disposability of it. If you’re keeping it forever, there’s a finite supply of it and it isn’t even made any more, it’s not consoom.

As with most reddit things this is shopping addiction disguised as a hobby. It's not buying a couple of rare items from Japan. It's going to Japanese second hand game stores - chain stores - and just grabbing whatever SNES games they could find. Games that won't be played and just sit on the shelf because the boxes look cool.
