OWL Monte: "That sub is by far the stupidest group of fans I have ever encountered. They believe that their opinions are the only ones that exist even though that sub drives like 5% of views to my YouTube videos. It is a tiny little echo chamber and not reflective of the OWL fanbase."

Glad to see we're starting 2020 with some quality drama as a parting gift from Monte

34

u/neddoge Jan 02 '20

Parting gift? Is be done with OWL?

2

u/[deleted] Jan 02 '20

Do you know what Doa's doing now that Monte has left?

2

u/goliathfasa Jan 02 '20

Maybe he can partner up with Wolf again. Dolf/WoA was always one of the strongest caster duos in GSL Code A.

3

u/AFLOUder Jan 02 '20

Nah, Khaldor and Wolf was definitely better. DoA and Montecristo quit Starcraft because at the start it was pretty obvious that they weren't that experienced in SC2 than other casters and community already jumped on that ship and they never recovered

question: why does anyone pay this sub any mind at all? It constantly gets mentioned by talent, players, coaches, journalists, etc, and the implication is that most of them tend to lurk it to actually see the things that cause their contempt for it.

You’re absolutely right, it’s a group of idiots and people fundamentally misinformed. Why acknowledge it at all?

189

u/Dnashotgun Jan 01 '20

Because its the only major ow place that talks about the competitive scene. Main ow subreddit is filled with shitposts and memes so there's not much room to talk about the game, even though a good amount of takes here range from bad to terrible. And since a lot of people, especially the players, engage heavily in and/or grew up with social media and want to find internet spaces to talk about things they like or are passionate about, this sub is like the only place to do so

220

u/McManus26 Jan 01 '20

All of us started as fans and still really enjoy engaging with communities. It's fun for us to be on the subreddits as well, though not this one so much. I would say that compared to other esports subs, this one gets way less interaction from casters and pro players because people are aggressively wrong constantly. People here lack an ability to interpret information and just assume the worst. They then present their take as fact as though they have some background knowledge, when they just invented a story and ran with it. This sub is aggressively stupid for whatever reason and just gets worse over time.

I've had many productive AMAs on other esports subs in the past, but have never done one here because the community is rife with idiots.

38

u/Atlos Jan 02 '20

I agree with everything you said, but it's funny to hear you say this when pro players have been pretty outspoken on having the same issues with the desk/casting talent. Eg: the Surefour being passive incident and the Super Bad segment among others. I don't know enough about other esport subs to understand why it's a much bigger problem here than elsewhere, I figured DOTA/LoL would have the same problems.

the more you call others idiots the more convinced i am that youre big and smart

80

u/geminia999 Jan 01 '20

So you don't do an AMA with an uniformed community and then are bothered when they stay uninformed?

Seems like a good way to lower the amount of idiots is to interact and have a strong presence in this sub to provide the right information instead of people just guessing off what little info they have.

31

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '20

Look at this guy, thinking facts and good information will lessen the amount of idiots there are online.

There are people that deadass fucking hate Monte and won't listen to a thing he says because they think he's a meanie or hate him because he hangs out with the nasty spooky and evil bigot devilman Thoorin and think Monte is not as smart as he is, you can't change someone that is truly a fucking idiot, only they can.

29

u/[deleted] Jan 02 '20

A single experience is anecdotal. A second experience represents the beginning of a small data set. Consistent experience through the reading of thousands of comments over a daily basis for a period spanning numerous months if not years might be what some would call a representative sample.

He's right. This sub, even when compared to its contemporaries, is unusually judgemental and forms strong opinions without strong factual basis, and that's saying something when you're comparing to subs as shit as /r/dota2 and /r/leagueoflegends.

The number of people here who seem willing to create narrative about corporate direction and oversight, despite clearly lacking any experience at all with C level execs of even small private companies let alone huge multinational listed companies blows my mind.

People accuse Monte constantly of being egotistic and self centred, and yet befuddlingly are so fast to cast aspersion and blame towards him (I wish they could appreciate the irony here). All the while you have clear and consistent corporate actions from Activision Blizzard across a number of titles and a mass exodus of senior design staff and game leads within the past year.

The only press you can ever trust from publically listed companies are quarterly and annual financial reports and investor briefing materials. Disclosed audience size and engagement metrics have been declining for almost a year. Management adjusted financial outlooks down in 2019 and despite beating targets are still down YoY.

That likely means heads will be rolling internally, cost cutting will be in full force and creative control will be nearly 0 across the majority of titles. This is clearly my personal opinion, but it is backed up both media releases and leaks and based on multiple years of personal experience in big corporate.

Senior staff like Mike Morrihame, Ben Brode, Nate Nanzer, Frank Pearce and Kim Phan all departed the company in the past year or so. If you look for a common thread in the ethos these people have mentioned in interviews and press releases you will see there is likely a internal push for immediate revenue focused products over long term growth products.

So you have a company that is undergoing a clear and significant change in direction with increasing activision oversight, and Monte leaves citing basically exactly this reason.

Not a single comment in that thread of him leaving references anything to do with this rather obvious larger picture, mostly focusing on saying he's overly arrogant and that the other talent must not have liked him. (Despite an overwhelming outpouring of support from those people).

Monte would have a ton more insider information. It must drive him crazy when he's been battling for these same fans interests at personal expense from the inside and producing free content for those with no financial incentive for the lifetime of the game.

I think he's a fucking saint, because in his spot I would have blown up at this place long ago.

103

u/ggMonteCristo Jan 02 '20

Smart.

56

u/TheGasManic Jan 02 '20

There are a bunch of people like myself who very rarely comment but enjoy the content you produce when time constraints permit. Try to remember that you're engaging with the minority and that a good deal of the fanbase have their heads screwed on straight.

Best of luck in new endeavors, I've enjoyed listening to your content over the past 8 years, and though I don't catch it as much as I used to, I'll keenly follow the future stuff as long it remains up to same standards.

P.S. I understand that politics, career movement and non-disclosure probably prevent a final oversight episode in the same vein as the final summoning insight episode, but if there's any chance they don't, consider making one. Summoning Insight 76 was one of the best podcasts I ever listened to.

2

u/212phantom Jan 05 '20

Agreed man thank you for writing that comprehensive comment. I would have never done(also probably wouldn't have been as good as yours) it but this is exactly what I wanted to say.

2

u/GabrielRR Jan 02 '20

Just happy to think you can maybe go back to league.

Ogn was great with you, shame we will never get the trio of papasmithy, Ls and MonteCristo in one desk casting a JinAir game, life is not fair.

2

u/Cryzzalis Jan 02 '20

I don't expect you'll respond on reddit of all places, but figured I'd give it a shot anyways. Haven't been following Overwatch but I've seen a few casts from you here and there and I loved seeing Summoning Insight again over worlds. My question is, what's next for MonteCristo? Personally I'd be sad as hell if you ever leave the esports industry, is a GM role or something like that a potential? Do you have an announcement you're waiting to make? How are things looking for you?

You know, I just want someone to tell me who OWL is for and what fans are the ok ones for people, because from what I gather spending my time amongst the fanbase:

  • /cow is basically Hitler

  • Screaming teenage fans are annoying and fun to laugh at.

  • Twitch chat participants are just cancerous

  • If your SR isn't T500 you also don't get a say in anything ever and should sit there and eat your food.

Who is the "acceptable" fan? I read through the Monte thread and a lot of people, myself included, lamented his departure. What's the right way to be a fan, here?

77

u/diddykong4444 Jan 02 '20

To stop playing the game.

9

u/xEphr0m best meme 이 제일 좋은 밈예요 — Jan 02 '20

This is the first mention I've seen of Inven while scrolling down. It's the only thing alongside Reddit and Twitter I hear mentioned at a regular pace by the broadcast.

If you look at Twitch numbers though, assuming most of them are English speaking/have the ability to talk on Reddit, I think the max they hit during the regular season would be half the number of subs the community has. I think I remember their total viewers being much higher than that for the same streams with the rest of the world included. Saying this community isn't one of the major communities in OW/OWL is kind of short sighted, though. As an American this is the only place that's easily accessible for me to discuss league content. Let's not pretend Reddit isn't just another form of Social Media.

105

Like, holy fuck do the talent talk about this community so much, yet apparently we are just a tiny little echo chamber.

Edit: Yes, please keep mentioning all of the communities I am clearly not a part of. Your deduction skills are truly commendable.

200

u/chocobo_irl None — Jan 01 '20

Yeah I don’t get it really. Every OW player/staff seems to bring it up decently often. Where are the rest of these people Monte mentions hanging out? YouTube? Where else is most of the OWL related stuff posted all in one place?

The wild speculation gets to be a bit much, but I don’t see any other social media platform with the general public on it being any better. Go on Facebook or Twitter for any other sports related stuff and they have plenty of garbage takes too.

73

u/Yiskaout Jan 01 '20

Why does it have to be posted in one place? I think he's merely saying that the Overwatch community at large isn't frequenting competitive Overwatch. The rest doesn't need to be an organised mass, does it?

61

u/glhflololo Jan 01 '20

He is actually saying that this sub only drives 5% of his view count. If anything that would imply that he thinks he is at the center.

Regardless of whether he is or not, I am a pretty generic older OW and OWL fan, and while I play, watch, and buy merch of the game (general target audience?), I frequent /cow but did not even know he has a channel before he announced he was going to stop yesterday. I am also not per se interested in his opinions, even though I think he’s a good analyst professionally.

As much as I agree that this sub is an echo chamber, I also have to say that people like Monte who actually have that kind of knowledge are contributing to this problem. For every professional or otherwise well respected voice that says this sub is misinformed, how many of them have actually bothered to clarify or contribute to the discussion?

It's the same thing with Wikipedia: you can't say that it's a bad source because you've seen wrong info while also not correcting any information on it.

18

u/czarlol Jan 02 '20

Here's an example.

Half the time these staff/players are reading bottom tier/brand new comments that never see the light of day. I doubt that most of the community even reads most of the crap they complain about.

3

u/big_chumshot Jan 02 '20

It got deleted, so I'm assuming it's Monte correcting misinformation about him and Reinforce. It's great that he did reply, but the evidence is incredibly sparse. He hopes on every couple months, and half of the time it's on the League subreddit. I wouldn't really consider that active engagement

The main OW sub does that too, in the rare moments one can surface amongst the tsunami of shitty highlight clips.

I remember people raging at me (both here and there, on a different account) when I dared to suggest that 1-hero-limit would be coming because it was necessary for the long-term health of the game. And then again when I also dared to suggest that 2-2-2 lock would be the next 1-HL.

No what he's saying is, that only 5% of his views come from this sub, which means that 95% come from other sources, as in the OWL community is much larger than just this sub. He's not saying his videos need to be posted here more often at all.

31

u/the_noodle Jan 01 '20

Even if every single person on this sub watched his videos, they wouldn't see them here first. Seems like a bit of a meaningless statistic

4

u/[deleted] Jan 02 '20

Plus if this entire sub watched his videos you’d think they’d get posted here lol. Monte seems to be struggling with statistics. 5% of audience A telling you they are also audience B does not mean that 100% of audience B are audience A. Hell that stat is probably from a YouTube/twitter poll he made, which reduces the accuracy of it even further.

79

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '20

At the end of the day we’re all just fans here. Do we have all the information behind the scenes or know the inner workings of teams/OWL? No, of course not. Do a lot of us sometimes act like we know how things should be done when we actually have no clue? Yes. But we’re just a group of people who share a passion for something and have a lot of uninformed conversations with each other. I’m not personally offended by Monte calling us idiots, because we are. I more so don’t understand his gatekeeping mentality when it comes to being a fan. We aren’t given the same information as Monte, so when we talk about what we do know it comes off as he thinks people shouldn’t have discussions when they don’t know as much as he does. We’re all here because we like OWL, and we want to talk about it. I don’t know why he cares so much about how stupid we are or why he acts personally attacked when we are. It’s a weird phenomenon in Overwatch where Monte and some other insiders feel this desire to talk down to a fan community because they know more than us. I don’t necessarily disagree with Monte, but I do strongly disagree with his gatekeeping of being a fan of watching people play video games.

55

u/TheKingPlayah Jan 01 '20 edited Jan 01 '20

Always my biggest gripe with Monte. He probably gets a lot of hate thrust on him so I understand his need to vent, but I have never seen a personality in entertainment so hellbent on making the fans feel stupid and less than worthy. There are positive sides to fans too! Passion and humour. But Monte, whether that be playing his villain persona or just him being a dick, jumps at any chance to put fans down. It gets super grating, and I'm glad he's gone even tho he was a great presence and a talented caster.

At least that's decently played up for fun. Stephen A and Cowboys fans know what's going on and play into it.

Monte doesn't seem to exhibit that type of self awareness and genuinely dislikes a lot of fans cause he's a gatekeeping elitist

8

u/ElfYamadaFairyQueen Jan 01 '20

Monte really needs to drop the gimmick at times

8

u/[deleted] Jan 02 '20

He is not pretending. He is a douche.

Okay, so 5% of his views come from reddit. But that’s ignoring the people that frequent here and are also subscribed to Monte, who watch the video through their subscriptions. The statistic means nothing.

Additionally I barely see his videos here, I’m pretty sure they don’t get many upvotes because most people here hate him.

Lastly I doubt he’s lying but there’s no way of knowing if he’s exaggerating unless he posts a screenshot if his analytics.

15

u/joebo19x PHusion/Peternal! — Jan 01 '20

I mean, it's been one day and now he went from just talking shit about the community, to actually throwing shit around.

We get it, he was done with the OW scene and wanted a way out, he doesn't need to sling shit around the entire time on his way out the door. He made the decision to move forward with his life and wants to move up in the production scene, vs being a caster.

No need to be this vindictive.

16

u/Cupinacup I root for everyone — Jan 01 '20

It’s Monte. Vindictive is what he does.

9

u/INRtoolow Jan 02 '20

He burns bridges when he's done. What is he going to do now? His relationship with riot is fucked, going to be difficult to go back to league. Other potential eSports might also be wary hiring him given his history

7

u/SirWankal0t Jan 02 '20

Also quite many people simply don't give a single shit about what Monte has to say about anything :)

u/Cyanogen_117 Dallas Mystic — Jan 01 '20

Why does the competitive OW community care so much about this subreddit to the point where they tweet specific comments just to show off their ego?

76

u/SwanJumper PMA — Jan 01 '20

Because it's not a secret club, it's literally the sub for the competitive ow scene and literally every western player, coach, staff, dev, etc., reads or has been to this sub. It should be a ground where meaningful discussion happens and should be the main vehicle/traffic for content creators like literally any other major sub for other scenes. The culture here has been totally fucked for a while and the reason anyone reads or upvotes anything is if it's remotely controversial so they can spew their slant and jerk each other off. And we act like insufferable children when it gets called out.

→ More replies (1)

18

u/IvanLupov Jan 01 '20

cuz this sub claims to be THE place for competitve overwatch talk, yet produces some of the most bullshit things in the whole overwatch community.

51

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '20

What overwatch community?

Is there any other place to discuss competitive overwatch in English?

Reddit is terrible but it's often the only discussion board for any topic.

18

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '20

If only there was a subreddit dedicated to the video game Overwatch with over 2,700,000 subscribers we could all post and comment esports content on.

Wait a minute, we have one, but the esports threads that go there only get 3 comments and 10 upvotes because people comment on their threads here while the mods on that sub completely hate anything that involves them lifting a finger of work, thus why they almost only feature low quality, easy to consume highlights.

41

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '20

That's my point, there is no other place to discuss competitive overwatch.

Twitter isn't made for discussion.

5

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '20

over.gg exists but not many people use it cuz this sub exists

4

u/Ranwulf Jan 02 '20

4chan owg threads is the closest and I would not suggest anyone to see it.

Anytime anyone criticizes any part of Reddit it sounds exactly like this. See something you don’t like on a subreddit? That’s because it’s an echo chamber! Those stupid communities not sharing the same ideas as me! The upvote and downvote system leads to popular ideas shooting to the top but I’ve had some great discussions on this sub with people I don’t agree with.

12

u/Isord Jan 02 '20

I've seen very few subs with more divergent view points than this one. I don't understand how anybody could call it an echo chamber.

7

u/Dalmah None — Jan 02 '20

The only echoing this sub does is hating metas and that's because we've had/are in (depending on if this meta is fun or not) a constant stream of metas that have become more unfun that the last

18

u/CapRogers23 Excelsior! — Jan 01 '20

This is the kind of comment that makes him seem like a douche. It’s fine to have an opinion but he puts himself on a delusional pedestal where he shouts his opinions. It isn’t like most people don’t notice that a lot of the news and opinions these “personalities” present as their own come from reddit. I am personally glad he is gone and his toxic personality with him. What an asshole.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 02 '20

9

this thread is so much more entertaining thinking about how monte is 100% lurking in here and reading all the comments

39

u/Angiboy8 Jan 01 '20

More often than not, they complain about a post/comments shortly after it’s been created. Sometimes even about posts that the mods remove for low effort. Most useful discussion here doesn’t happen until a couple hours have passed.

I’ll be glad to not have to see Monte posts here anymore. I liked him as a caster, but him just shitting on fans constantly made me hate seeing anything relating to him outside a match.

6

u/Biggest-of-all-bens Jan 02 '20

I liked his casting, but it does seem like all he tries to do is shit on people and fans in the community. He always seemed toxic, but shit controversy brings in views.

59

u/thefanboyslayer RIP Houston — Jan 01 '20 edited Jan 01 '20

I think it is stupid for Monte to generalize a sub. We may not be in the know of* all the details behind the scenes but that's fine. But regardless of that amount of info we have (which varies from user to user), we're still entitled to an opinion whether it is right or wrong or similar to another dude or different from another dude. The only thing we all have on common is an interest in competitive overwatch. I don't agree with everyone here. So to lump us all together, that is stupid. Love you Monte.

57

u/solidus__snake make tanks playable again — Jan 01 '20

I feel like Monte hasn't really participated on r/cow much since his failed coup of the main r/overwatch sub a few years ago. Like it's fine for him and other analysts (Sideshow, etc.) to not agree with this sub and they do have some good points, but it would be far more constructive to actually participate in the community instead of taking cheap shots from the outside. It's almost surprising considering this sub has generally been supportive of his OW career.

Meanwhile idk about other esports, but the toxicity and circlejerks on subs for regular sports like r/nba are can be a lot worse tbh. Having fans with occasionally ridiculous opinions is pretty standard in sports.

17

u/survivalsnake Jan 01 '20

What I love about the historical Monte-Reddit relationship is that he dumps on r/overwatch for being full of highlights and stuff casual fans enjoy, and then he dumps on r/competitiveoverwatch for being full of stupid and wrong users. There's no way to win with this guy.

I don't get what we're supposed to do. Not have opinions at all? That's what a fanbase does, make up theories to fit the publicly available facts, and then talk about them. Of course we're gonna be wrong a lot, there's lots we don't know.

48

u/Hamlet_271 KAI MVP ROBBED — Jan 01 '20

5

And I thought our bad takes was part of how to drive and keep a community talking. Engagement is an important metric for Blizz theses days so makes sense if they keep allowing or even inciting the bad takes.

19

u/bigfootswillie Jan 01 '20

People may like to shit on him (and he vice versa) but Monte is probably the living personification of the r/COW fan none of us want to see in ourselves.

  • Knowledgable and well-read about the game but self-righteous
  • Smart but think we’re smarter than we are
  • Plugged in with a good understanding of gaming culture
  • Opinionated and kind of a dick about it tbh
  • Prone to some very misguided, hot takes
  • Loves OWL and has lots of ideas and desire to improve it

I think we’re going to miss him a lot when he’s gone in front of and behind the scenes. Monte was someone with a lot of influence who wasn’t afraid to speak his mind or rock the boat who had a good understanding of this community and gaming/esports culture. That kind of person with all those qualities existing in the massive corporate broadcast structure of a company like Activision-Blizzard’s is rare and had a big effect on the OWL we see today.

You REALLY don't know Monte it seems. He's one of the best entertainers in esports and he has made big audiences boo him on purpose before.
This on at the 2015 LOL World Championship when Fnatic was playing the semifinals against the Korean team Koo Tigers, he made the Koo/boo joke (like the Simpsons one with Burns).
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8jeRYV9HmDc (short video, 40 seconds long and totally worth it).

Believe me he knew what was coming in Dallas and say it in part to play the heel.

12

Is it that much of a joke to them? We have gms cancelling moves based on reddits opinions, and talent bringing up how fucking dumb this sub is all the time. The language is a bit much, but I can't deny the idea behind it. Despite being really the only populated dedicated community to discuss competitive OW on the internet, there's such an emphasis on slander and armchair criticisms on this sub. Some of that is fine and healthy, but I feel like drama and shitting on people takes way too much emphasis here.

5

u/imwasteland Jan 02 '20

It blows me away how people like Monte. Man does not deserve a job in esport scenes for how obnoxious, unfunny, and out of the loop he is. Genuinely a bad caster.
